2 INTERNAL SESSIONS 1 Venue: Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum. Mirador Room. Marqués de Cubas 21, Madrid. Mobility is essential in creating value for our economies, and welfare for our society. For example, according to the official statistics for Spain, commerce, transportation, and tourism accounted for more than 20% of the total GDP, suggesting the importance of this activity for the whole economy and its added value for society. However, mobility is also responsible for a large share of energy use, GHG emissions and atmospheric pollutants. Transport demands 20% of the world's primary energy (92% of it from oil), and emits 15% of global CO2 emissions. Congestion and road accidents are also very relevant externalities of transport. And these problems are increasing, with the economic growth in developing countries resulting in large increases in mobility. There is hence a clear need to make mobility more sustainable. Sometimes that will imply reducing its demand or need, sometimes it will require a change in transport modes, sometimes a technological transformation. In most cases, a combination of all of the above will be needed. This is particularly relevant in cities. In metropolitan areas, mobility planning faces a diverse demand, limited space and high population density. Currently, more than 50% of the world's population live in urban areas, and this will only increase in the future. Urban areas are also responsible for 80% of global GDP, 65% of total energy consumption, and 70% of CO2 emissions (plus a large share of atmospheric pollutants). Therefore, all the trade-offs and challenges faced by mobility are further stressed in cities. The goal of the 2017 BP Forum on Energy and Sustainability is to discuss, and hopefully find consensus about, how to make mobility more sustainable, by reflecting upon its challenges, both for urban areas and for freight transport, and analyzing the different alternatives in terms of technologies or policies. 1 Attendance to the sessions of the Forum is by invitation only. On the morning of Friday September 28th there will be an academic activity at on the same topic as the Forum and open to the public. The Forum participants that are still in Madrid are welcome to attend to this event, whose program is announced at the end of this prospectus. Program 2 of 5
