6 INTRODUCTION Approach Framework Leadership towards sustainability Are we doing the project right? Are we doing the right project? With respect to sustainable development, our approach concerns the synthesis of the three broad disciplines. For all projects, including new cities, urban developments in existing cities, and infrastructure projects, we emphasize on leadership for the best collaboration of stakeholders, management and planning of the project towards sustainability. Leadership implies communication and collaboration early on, involve a wide variety of people in creating ideas for the project, and understand the long-term, holistic view of the project and its life cycle. Therefore, we need to answer two questions:

7 INTRODUCTION Approach Framework The tools A broad set of tools has been developed to control our framework on sustainable infrastructure and cities: Envision Checklist is an educational tool that helps users become familiar with the sustainability aspects of infrastructure project design. Envision Rating System is both an assessment tool for sustainable infrastructure projects and a template for planning, designing and constructing sustainable projects. The Zofnass Tool for Sustainable City Planning concerns city scale, the development of planning and design guidelines for the infrastructure systems, best practices, and projective design solutions.

The purpose of Envision is to help users determine the extent to which their proposed infrastructure design truly contributes to conditions of sustainability. Provides a holistic framework for evaluating and rating the community, environmental, and economic benefits of all types and sizes of infrastructure projects. Evaluates, grades, and gives recognition to infrastructure projects that use transformational, collaborative approaches to assess the sustainability indicators over the course of the project's life cycle. It can be used as a stand-alone assessment to quickly compare project alternatives or to prepare for a more detailed assessment. As a result, Envision could expand the breadth of the contribution to sustainability by: Meeting the city s main objectives regarding the reduction of private vehicles use and the upgrading of the air quality Supporting the specific urban planning targets of the Panepistimiou area Are we doing the project right?
