1 NORTH YORKSHIRE 1/659 (B.36.P012) COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW PROGRAMME ADDITIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL WORKS GREAT AND LITTLE OUSEBURN Combined Sewer Overflow Programme, Additional Archaeological Works, Great and Little Ousebourn, North Yorkshire. Archaeological Desk-Based Assessment Buglass, J Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 8pp, figs, refs Additional research included a site inspection of the Little Ousebourn site. A total of 20 sites were recorded along the route, which will not be directly affected by the route. There were 21 listed buildings noted. The study identified a low to moderate potential for prehistoric or medieval remains along the route and recommended the monitoring of ground disturbance works. [Au(adp)] 1/660 (B.36.P016) COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW PROGRAMME, PRELIMINARY WORKS Combined Sewer Overflow Programme, Preliminary Works, Yorkshire Johnson, P G Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 30pp, refs A rapid desk based appraisal of 25 sites across North and East Yorkshire and the City of York. For the majority of sites there were no recorded archaeological or historic sites within the immediate vicinity of the proposed works. Six of the schemes were located within areas considered to have some potential for the survival of archaeological remains. A programme of detailed and archaeological monitoring of initial ground works were recommended. [Au(adp)] Craven 1/661 (B.36.M007) SD BD24 9AF CLEATOP WOOD, SETTLE Cleatop Wood, Settle, North Yorkshire. Archaeological Survey Dormer, I Bedale : I. Dormer, 2003, 12pp, colour pls, figs, tabs Work undertaken by: I. Dormer The visible archaeological features, which dated from different periods, were indications of settlement and land-use over a period extending from perhaps the 11th to the 19th centuries, with added possibility that there may also have been some prehistoric activity on the site. 2 1/662 (B.36.P011) SE BD23 6RN COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW PROGRAMME, PRELIMINARY WORKS Combined Sewer Overflow Programme, Preliminary Works, North Yorkshire Buglass, J Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 13pp, refs The rapid desk-based assessment into the archaeological and historic background of 10 sites across North Yorkshire, revealed that seven of the schemes (78-80 regent Street, Skipton; Carleton road, Skipton, Morrisons CSO, Skipton, Brook Street,Skipton, Gargrave road, Skipton, Fell View, Embsay and Draughton STW) there were no recorded archaeological or historical sites within 250m of the proposed works. The remaining three schemes had archaeological remains present within 250m, (Skipton road, Embsay, Cavendish View, Embsay and Cononley Old STW) but had no identified potential for the survival of archaeological remains. No further investigation or monitoring was recommended. [Au(adp)] 1/663 (B.36.P006) SD BD23 1UT COMBINED SEWER OVERFLOW PROGRAMME, PRELIMINARY WORKS Combined Sewer Overflow Programme, Preliminary Works, North Yorkshire. Archaeological Desktop Assessment Buglass, J Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 26pp, refs The archaeological and historical background of 19 sites across North Yorkshire, for the combined sewer outflow programme was assessed. At one of the schemes, Skipton STW, Snaygill, there were no recorded archaeological or historic sites within 500m of the proposed works. 15 of the schemes had a low potential (Brook street, Skipton, Carleton West, Borrage Bridge, Ripon, South Crescent, Ripon, Skelton, South Stainley, Cross Hills, Cowling, North Deighton and Little Ribston) and three of the schemes had a moderate to high potential for additional archaeological remains to be present, (Bondgate Green, Ripon, Newbridge, Ripon and Bishop Monkton). 3 Hambleton 1/665 (B.36.P018) SE DL7 9SD AINDERBY STEEPLE TO BULLAMOOR PIPELINE Ainderby Steeple to Bullamoor Pipeline, North Yorkshire. Archaeological Desktop Assessment Fraser, R Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 14pp, figs, tabs, refs Assessment along the route of proposed water pipeline found that 48 sites were identified within a buffer of 500m of the pipeline. These included a single Scheduled Monument, also a Grade I Listed Building, and three other Listed Buildings. Ten of the sites were identified as directly within the route of the proposed pipeline. The most significant of these was the medieval hospital of St. James, to the south east of Northallerton, which was in operation between c.1200 and [Au(adp)] 1/666 (B.36.P009) SE YO7 3AX HUTTON SESSAY, HAMBLETON Hutton Sessay, Hambleton, North Yorkshire. Cultural Heritage Appraisal Fraser, R Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 9pp, figs, refs The assessment identified 11 sites within the area, though both possible location sites for the IWO scheme were outside the historic village core. Further archaeological evaluation was recommended. [Au(adp)] 1/667 (B.36.P010) SE BD23 6AE LANGTHORNE, HAMBLETON Langthorne, Hambleton, North Yorkshire, Cultural Heritage Appraisal Fraser, R Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 9pp, figs, ref The assessment examined the potential for disruption to archaeological remains for three proposed sites. All three of the options were found to have the potential for medieval remains, though Option two was identified as the most sensitive due to its proximity to a moated enclosure and three Listed Buildings. Further archaeological evaluation was recommended [Au(adp)] 1/668 (B.36.P008) SE YO61 1SF PROPSED WASTEWATER TREATMENT WORKS, FALWITH, NEAR EASINGWOLD Proposed Wastewater Treatment Works, Falwith, Near Easingwold, North Yorkshire. Cultural Heritage Appraisal Neal, P Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 11pp, figs, refs The assessment identified nine archaeological sites nearby. These included crop marks, probably of Iron Age, Roman date, medieval and post-medieval field systems and two sand pits. The assessment recommended a walkover survey. [Au(adp)]

Cultural Heritage Appraisal Neal, P Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, The assessment identified that the three possible locations for proposed water treatment works were located in an area with 29 sites, including nine Listed Buildings. These included a Roman road, a medieval moated site, a 17th 18th century house and gardens as well as associated field systems and a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Cattal Bridge. Location three was recommended as the selection for development. [Au(adp)]

These might be associated with the medieval and later mill known to have been located next to the junction of Water Skellgate, Skellgarths and Duck Hill. There was some evidence that a stone mill race lies intact close to the Water Skellgate frontage heading eastwards towards Skellgarths. The southern part of the site may lay on, or close to a medieval course of the River Skell. [Au(abr)] Richmondshire 1/677 (B.36.M005) NZ DL10 6DA BOLTON-SWALE ST. MARY'S C.E. 7 Ripon 1/680 (B.36.Q003) SE SKELL CORRIDOR, RIPON FLOOD ALLEVIATION SCHEME, SAWLEY Skell Corridor, Ripon Flood Alleviation Scheme, North Yorkshire. Report on an Archaeological Desk Top Study Finlayson, R York : York Archaeological Trust, 2003, 28pp, figs, refs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust The assessment identified a number of post-medieval buildings and a disused quarry within or very close to the study area as well as a medieval church. Many prehistoric monuments are close to the site which means there is a possiblilty for similar remains within the study area. [AIP] Archaeological periods represented: MD, PM Ryedale 1/681 (B.36.P002) SE YO17 8HS ST.PETER'S CHURCH, WINTRINGHAM St. Peter's Church, Wrintringham, North yorkshire, Archaeological Desk Top study Hunter-Mann, K York : York Archaeological Trust, 2003, 33pp,colour pls, figs, tabs, refs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust The archaeological desk-top study and walk-over survey recorded that much archaeological research had taken place in the vicinity of Wintringham and significant remains had been found ranging from the prehistoric to the medieval periods. However, the existing burial ground was likely to have disturbed the underlying archaeological levels to some considerable depth. It thus seemed unlikely that any significant archaeological disturbance would be caused by the remedial work to the church, although burials and below-ground elements of the church structure could be encountered. The recommendation of the report was to record the existing church fabric in advance of refurbishment, for any ground works to be monitored and for any burials encountered to be dealt with appropriately. Cultural Heritage Assessment Anon Barnard Castle : Northern Archaeological Associates, 2003, 63pp, colour pls, figs, tabs, refs The assessment identified that the scheme would not affect any known sites, though an auger survey and test pit investigations had revealed that the proposed development areas did contain regionally important sedimentary deposits dating from the late glacial period (c.12000bc to 8,300bc) and very early Post-glacial (c.8300 BC to c.4000 BC), which would be removed. The potential for unrecorded prehistoric remains was recorded, and a further programme of fieldwalking and trial trenching was recommended. [Au(adp)]

Finlayson, R York : York Archaeological Trust, 2003, 29pp, colour pls, figs, refs Work undertaken by: York Archaeological Trust The archaeological desk top study identified the complexity of the development of settlement at Cawood from the early medieval period onwards. In particular, the potential for survival of significant medieval to post-medieval waterfront structures and deposits at Cawood were noted. The proposed work of enhancement of the existing Ouse bank embankment was judged likely to impinge on these potential remains and an archaeological watching brief to monitor the proposed work on this section was recommended. The topping up of embankments and the creation of a new embankment along the southern boundaries of properties in church end could disturb remains of earlier field boundaries, but did not warrant archaeological monitoring.
