4 LANDSCAPES & NATIONAL IDENTITY Landscapes play a powerful role in the creation of national identities. People connect with an image of a landscape. This has an impact on how they see themselves as a national community. Landscapes also build a sense of belonging that helps define people s attitudes and perspectives. Pearson, 2014 Landscapes have a lot of meaning to people Backdrop of our day-to-day lives Link people to nature Link past and present Some landscapes symbolise a nation, such as the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France Content adapted from: Pearson Australia (2014) Geography 8 Student book, chapter 2.2 Landscapes and National Identity,

13 AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES AND NATIONAL IDENTITY: FROM THE BUSH TO THE BEACH When European settlers first arrived in Australia, they encountered an environment very different from Europe. Vast expanse of country Outback forests and farmland- became known as the bush Uniquely Australian Evokes tales of the struggle for survival Stories of drovers, outback women, bushrangers and even lost children By 1900, the landscape of the bush had become the symbol of the new nation, even though most people lived in towns and cities Content adapted from: Pearson Australia (2014) Geography 8 Student book, chapter 2.2 Landscapes and National Identity,
14 AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES AND NATIONAL IDENTITY: FROM THE BUSH TO THE BEACH More recently, the beach has become a symbolic landscape.
