4 LANDSCAPES & NATIONAL IDENTITY Landscapes play a powerful role in the creation of national identities. People connect with an image of a landscape. This has an impact on how they see themselves as a national community. Landscapes also build a sense of belonging that helps define people s attitudes and perspectives. 13 AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPES AND NATIONAL IDENTITY: FROM THE BUSH TO THE BEACH When European settlers first arrived in Australia, they encountered an environment very different from Europe. Your display must include: The location of the landscape The name of the landscape or area (if applicable) What the landscape looks like The key features of the landscape Your understanding or idea of what Australian national identity is A list of reason why you chose this landscape to characterise Australia s national identity Possible options: Uluru Sydney harbour The Great Barrier Reef MCG Bondi Beach Etc.
