This approach expands upon the more typical small scale design scope of landscape architecture, which strengthens landscape architecture planning and design by combining ecology and culture at an urban scale. This holistic landscape architecture planning and design system, based on the integration of urban development with nature, guides the formation of urban features and the construction of comfortable human settlements. Conceiving a city as a large garden and avoiding the loss of its unique urban quality is an ideal alternative for the challenges that China s rapid urbanization faces. This approach also serves as an underlying principle for the creation of characteristic Chinese cities in the 21st century.
