3 FONDS-LEVEL DESCRIPTION Repository: Cardinal Carter Library - King s University College Title: Gerald Killan Fonds Dates: Extent: 826 cm of textual record Biographical Sketch: Gerald Killan was born on August 7, Graduating with an honours B.A. in History from the University of Toronto in 1968, he continued his studies at McMaster University in Hamilton completing his Masters degree (History) in1969 and his Ph.D.(History) in He was offered the position of Assistant Professor of History at King's College (UWO) in 1973, a position he held until In 1977 he was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of History with tenure at King's College. From he chaired the Department of Social Sciences at King's, and from he acted as Chairperson of the Department of Political Science and History at King's. In 1984 he attained the rank of full Professor. He was subsequently appointed Academic Dean of King's College in 1992, a position he held until In 1997, Dr. Killan was appointed Principal of King's College. Aside from his achievements in academe, Dr. Killan is married and has three children. An active and vocal participant in the community, Dr. Killan has acted as a member of numerous historical societies in Ontario, and has been the President of the Ontario Historical Society ( ), President of the Champlain Society, a founding member of the Friends of Pinery Park, and the Chairperson of the Ministry of Culture and Communications Advisory Committee on the Land Registry Office Records for Ontario. Dr. Killan is an eminent scholar and has published and reviewed numerous articles for academic publications. In addition, he has authored three highly respected books on Ontario history, including: Preserving Ontario's Heritage: A History of the Ontario Historical Society (Ottawa: 1976, 292 pgs), David Boyle: From Artisan to Archeologist (Toronto: 1983, 276 pgs), and Protected Places: A History of Ontario's Provincial Parks System (Toronto: 1993, 385 pgs). Dr. Killan has won several prestigious awards for his writing including: The City of Toronto Book Award in 1984 for David Boyle, the Ontario Historical Society's Cruikshank Gold Medal for outstanding service to the cause of history of Ontario in 1984, and the first Floyd S. Chalmers Award in Ontario History for the best book published on Ontario History in Dr. Killan has also won accolades for his teaching (at UWO) having received a teacher of the year award. 5 SERIES LEVEL DESCRIPTION Fonds: Series I: Gerald Killan Fonds Gerald Killan: Academic Records, Curriculum Vitae and Correspondence Scope and Content: The series contains Gerald Killan's academic records from grade three to Ph.D. including grades, thesis proposal, schedule for thesis completion providing information on his school and university performance and his parents anxieties, two copies of his resume from 1998, and his professional and private correspondence. The latter describes his relationships with various organizations, colleagues, acquaintances, superiors, friends, family members and students as well as related activities, for example, his work on the book titled: Protected Places: A History of Ontario s Provincial Parks System. The correspondence with organizations includes: letters from the Ontario Historical Society, University of Toronto - Faculty of Social Work, Quetico Foundation, Ontario Archeological Society, the Friends of the Boundary Waters Wilderness, Women's Canadian Historical Society and Sookmyung Women's University giving a clear picture of his professional activities between 1970 and The correspondence with colleagues, friends, family members and students in the form of postcards, memos, notes, official and unofficial letters and printed s were sent, by G. 9 Fonds: Series II: Gerald Killan Fonds Protected Places - Correspondence and Documents Scope and Content: Correspondence - not in chronological order - original proposal for the book. Related correspondence, phone messages, handwritten notes, index cards, notes for the book and a formal agreement with the Ministry of Natural Resources give a detailed picture of the writing process. Variety of other less substantial publications: articles and book reviews are also well documented, as are other professional activities. Copies of conference papers for example, Gambling with the Environment delivered in Las Vegas, Nevada - March 8-11, 1995, lectures given, for example, Using Teaching Evaluation Data to Improve Instructional Strategy, letters from environmental specialists, booklets, request for photographs from the Public Office in London, England, faxes, extensive notes on the file folders' covers, statistical reports, surveys and the students' letters-nominations for teaching award supplement the records from Series I. 10 Fonds: Series III: Gerald Killan Fonds David Boyle Biography: Records Pertaining to the Publication Scope and Content: The series contains records pertaining to the publications of David Boyle Biography for Canadian Encyclopedia and Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Includes photographs not published in the original book, maps, photographic reproductions, initial articles and writing guidelines-for the Dictionary of Canadian Biography and the New Canadian Encyclopedia. A wealth of Boyle's records, from his genealogical tree, legal documents, contracts, and the reproductions of his original handwritten letters dating back to 1880's are included. In addition to the pre and post publication correspondence, Ontario Land Registry Record and other relevant materials are a good research source. Copies of the 3 articles published by G. Killan are included. The documents in the alphabetized dividers of the document holder have no alphabetical organization, however the index card finding aid provides a reliable explanation of the documents' organization and contents. Killan as the Chairman for LHSC - OHS from There is an Executive Handbook, minutes of meetings from 1974 to 1981, financial statements and budgets ( ), directory of the members, statements of revenue and expenses, conference agendas, Killan's speeches and his proposal of 1975 for the OHS technical leaflet series, as well as records of its implementation in In addition, the series includes documents pertaining to OHS Local Historical Societies Committees, regulations for historical societies in Ontario, correspondence (letter from the Minister of Culture and Recreation, Niagara Escarpment Commission), index cards, handwritten notes, booklists and editorials. There are also Ontario Heritage Foundation, Heritage House, George Brown House records, administration documents and finance committee records, treasurer's notes as well as documents relevant to various OHS projects.
