A NEW COMMUNITY CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING - KELLEN THAYER
LANDSCAPE AS SYSTEM INTERSECTING SYSTEMS The proposed site is located at the intersection of the orange MAX line and Powell. this intersection is also a division of districts. The northeast and southwest sections have been filled out as residential, while the northwest and southeast are fast developing industrial districts. industrial district residential neighborhoods
LANDSCAPE AS SYSTEM TRANSPORT TO AND FROM THE CITY Located centrally to the orange MAX line, the site is a perfect location for a community hub. It also has the capability for dynamic program in accordance to the Willamette River, OMSI, and downtown Portland. to Portland Proximity to Willamette River From Milwaukie
LANDSCAPE AS SYSTEM SYSTEMATIC GROWTH By overlaying maps created in different periods of the historical record, we can analyse changes of both man-made infrastructure as well as natural physical landscape. portland s radial growth
GOALS: - SPARK INTEREST IN SUSTAINABLE LIVING - ENCOURAGE CHANGE IN EVERYDAY BEHAVIORS -ACT AS HUB FOR COMMUTORS FROM HOME- SCHOOL-WORK - PROVIDE HANDS ON ENVIRONMENT FOR ALL KINDS OF LIFESTYLES - INITIATE CITY-WIDE ATTITUDE TO CHANGE INEFFICIENT BEHAVIORS One of the most prudent social issues regarding climate change and sustainable living is people unconvinced their behavior can make a difference. While the majority of the country has accepted climate change, convincing the population to adjust their dayto-day behaviors proves to be a greater challenge. A center for a community that desires to learn and educate themselves on taking proactive steps to improve their environmental footprint should be seriously sought after. In order to prove to someone that changing their behaviors can make a difference on a larger scale, they have to see that they are not the only ones who wish to make a change. The design approach to the community center will allow the physical structure to reflect exactly what is being taught and expressed within. This will allow the physical nature of the facilities to serve as a demonstration of the most environmentally conscious approach to building construction and maintanence.
USER TYPES - GRADE SCHOOL STUDENT HOURS CAN CATER TO AFTER SCHOOL STUDENTS. WHILE MORNING HOURS TO ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES AND COURSE PLANNING. WATER CATCHMENT CONSTRUCTION - SIMPLE TO COMPLEX WATER CATCHMENT SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION - SEMINAR ON BENIFITS OF WATER CATCHMENT C. WATER TREATMENT - WATER FILTER CONSTRUCTION - SEMINAR ON VARIOUS WAYS TO TREAT WATER D. IRRIGATION SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION - SIMPLE IRRIGATION SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION - PLUMBING DEMONSTRATIONS AND SEMINAR ADDITIONAL SEMINARS AND DEMONSTRATIONS - A. MAINTAINING AND DEVELOPING HOME GARDENS B. APPROACH TO SOLAR ENERGY COLLECTION C. TIPS ON MAINTAINING A MORE EFFICIENT HOME D. NUTRITION AND HEALTHIER EATING HABITS E. SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT SHOPPING F. INSIDE AIR TREATMENT G. COMPOSTING AND RECYCLING H. GUEST SPEAKERS AND EXPERTS DAILY ACTIVITIES AND PROGRAMS INTENDING TO ENGAGE STUDENTS WILL APPROACH THESE SAME OBJECTIVES. THEY WILL INCLUDE DEMONSTRATIONS AND HANDS-ON ACTIVITIES.
COURSE OBJECTIVES Those enrolled in courses will learn the benifits of maintaining and more efficient home. Philosophies embedded within the social atmosphere of the center for sustainable living will encourage members to: - Compost - Reuse and recycle - Improve home insullation systems - Install water catchment and treatment systems - Install more efficient appliances - Buy environementally responsible products - Adjust poor heating and cooling habits - Plant more, and grow healthier food - Adjust poor transportation habits - Install Solar energy collectors - Talk to others about the benefits of living a more environmentally responsible life. STUDENT RESOURCES Additional services include flex space that can serve as an after school hang out for local students. This will provide students with an environment that will positively influence them to live more environmentally responsible. A place where students can go to do homework and relax after school will also benifit local parents, as well as encourage them to come in to the community center and learn more about the opportunities it can provide them.
DESIGN APPROACH The approach to design and building maintenance will practice the exact lessons that will be learned by those who attend courses at the community center. The buildings will be sources with only local and the most efficient building materials. Solar catchment systems will provide the facilities electricity. Water catchment and filtration systems will provide the facilities with grey and black water. Food growth and garden space will provide locals with fresh food within their community. The food growth facilities will be the epicenter for a weekly farmers market. This market will include food made within the center, as well as allow members to sell their surplus food growth. In addition to a sharing and purchasing fresh local food, members will be able to share their food growth techniques and introduce others to new food to grow within their personal home gardens.
THE INTENT BEHIND THE DEVELOPMENT OF A COMMUNITY CENTER FOR SUSTAINABLE LIVING IS DRIVEN BY THE DESIRE TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO PRACTICE RESPONSIBLE DAY-TO-DAY BEHAVIORS THAT CAN HAVE A POSITIVE IMPACT ON OUR ENVIRONMENT. THE INCREASING DENSITY OF PORTLAND ILLUMINATES THE NECESSITY TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT SUSTAINABLE RESPONSIBILITIES. THIS TYPE OF COMMUNITY CENTER IS INTENDED TO EXPAND THE TRAIN OF THOUGHT THAT INDIVIDUALS CAN IMPACT THE ENVIRONMENT IN MAJOR WAYS. OVER TIME THIS KIND OF FACILITY CAN BE AS COMMON AS POPULAR CENTERS SUCH AS ATHLETIC CLUBS. CREATING AN ATMO- SPHERE WHERE EVERYONE CAN FEEL LIKE THEIR BEHAVIOR IS CONTRIBUTING IS A LEADING FACTOR IN DEVELOPING AN ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY.

PRIMARY SCHOOL FOR SCIENCES AND BIODIVERSITY CHARTIER DALIX architects kellen thayer The architect s ambitions were to develop a primary school and gymnasium with their own natural environment. Environmentall innovative, the program relies on a concept driven by the development of a primary landscape which draws components and textures from its more local landscape. This developes as an urban enclave standing apart from the urban fabric. The landscape is elevated throughout the project to provide a sort of urban canopy, protected by the people. Integration of biodiversity biomimmickery
OPEN architecture BEIJING no.4 HIGH SCHOOL kellen thayer The design intent of the project is to help support a large planning scheme that is meant to build a healthier and self-sustainable new town just outside of Beijing s fifth ring road. The school is primarily in place to help support a rapidly growing urban environment. The project impliments as much outdoor and green space as possible to give relief to an unforgivingly urban environment. The building s program is seperated into three main program section; a rooftop farm, mid floor school, and ground floor garden. farm void school garden solid void
SANAA ZOLLVEREIN SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT AND DESIGN kellen thayer SANAA developed a learning environment that appears more dominent that it is. The volume that appears from the street is not the same volume that is experienced from the interior. Dynamic vertical and horizontal volumes of space provide for many different learning opportunities, both indoor and outdoor. Fully flexible spaces are provided for the floors that house the most productive components of the program. The punctured facade allows the building to stream daylight deep into the building. facade condition dynamic volume geometry

Developing a strong sense of community education in a rapidly developing district. Providenvironment should be one that has the capacity to educate outside communities and resources. - diate residences and employees, as well as provide a positive attitude and environmentally conscious approach to community education and commercial development. It should serve as a comof learning environments in order to support and diverse community. Physically, the structure(s) materials must be prioritized to set a positive standard and precedent of community development for both local and regional projects.
