5 What are Green Streets? Portland Green Streets A sustainable stormwater strategy. Meets regulatory compliance and resource protection goals. Uses a natural systems approach to manage stormwater, reduce flows, improve water quality and enhance watershed health.
6 Goals for Mobile Green Streets Increase the water quality of Mobile Bay by filtering the stormwater entering the Bay from the downtown area Mitigate thermal pollution to Mobile Bay Reduce downtown impervious surface runoff to slow down stormwater runoff and maximize infiltration Lessen localized flooding on Dauphin Street and other midtown Mobile streets Reduce demand on the city s stormwater sewer collection system and provide additional storage capacity where needed
7 Goals for Mobile Green Streets Increase urban green space, connectivity to schools and wildlife corridors Improve air quality and reduce air temperatures Increase opportunities for economic development in the downtown area The Mobile Downtown Alliance and the Greater Mobile Chamber of Commerce recognize that a Green Streets approach is an important downtown redevelopment strategy!

17 Heavy rains in Mobile lead to 58,000 gallons of sewer overflows By Casandra Andrews The Mobile Area Water & Sewer System reported about 58,000 gallons of sanitary sewer overflows occurred Monday as heavy rainfall moved through the area, according to the Mobile County Health Department. Three Mile Creek experienced the following overflows: 22,500 gallons from the Siena Vista neighborhood; 14,000 gallons from Tonlours Drive; 12,000 gallons from the intersection of Mill and Julian streets; and 9,600 gallons overflowed from Hayles Street, a dead end. Eslava Creek experienced overflows from at least two locations: 4,000 gallons from Westwood Street and 12,000 gallons from Johnston Avenue. Those who come in contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of the overflows should use caution, health officials said. Mobile News Register, March 2, 2010
