1 The District of Central Saanich Central Saanich Memorial Cenotaph Project Complied Questionnaire Responses Number of surve y returned by Jan 15, 2016: Please indicate how you became aw are of the cenotaph project. a) District web-site b) Peninsula News Revie w 6X c) Display at the Municipal Hall 5X d) W ord-of-mouth 2x e) Other: 3x -I attended the Remembrance Day ceremony and it was mentioned at that time. -(I) helped start it 2. Does the proposed design form align w ith your expectations of a cenotaph for this community? Yes No 8X 6X 3. Do you have any comments on specific aspects/details of the project? -I like the idea of Central Saanich having their own cenotaph and Centennial is OK, just not there. -Great. - Centennial park is much older than currently known. It was a link from Tsartlip and Tsawout villages and it was used for social and ceremonial purposes. This history is still within the oral history of elders from both nations. It is still utilized as such. -I would like to see First Nations, particularly the local war efforts of Tsartlip and other coast Salish, pre-contact recognized. For example, there was a legendary battle at Maple Bay - the war to end all wars - in the 1800's. The way we view "war" and recognition through the cenotaph is euro-canadian centric and not representative of the multination situation in Central Saanich. -I don t see any use of the poppy in the design. Could including it be considered? -Color the metal of the maple leafs orange/red in this day and age things don t have to be just monotone greater visibility and impact and more modern. Change combat helmet for peace keepers to represent the iconic blue beret. Emphasis on true reason for being there vs just another war (west elevation) ie Cyprus etc. List other peace keeping areas.
2 Replace artistic rocks with a bench (rock if you must) to allow us to sit and contemplate as well as give elderly a place or respite. Why is it necessary to repeat everything in French? How about something like we honor and remember vs lest more meaning to current and future generations. If you want this to be useful for our children let s make its information at least as current as the design. A sign explaining the significance of the symbols. -The site proposed is adjacent to a roof shelter which is useful considering our climate. -The location should be more visible from the roadway (see attached). Could be vandalized behind the shelter and building. Also shady. The height of 24ft is a bit tall maybe feet. I also agree that the cenotaph be kept in Saanichton and not located in Brentwood Bay. -Beautiful. -I like the design very much. -yes. -yes see back of document. -Perhaps a more prominent location would be better. -I do not like the symbolism I think the services men and women deserve a clear and precise tribute, early recognizable by all: such as an armed forces individual. 4. Is there any additional information not provided in the reference material that w ould improve your understanding of the project? -Not at this time. -I have not been provided any information on the project except for seeing it on facebook. -labels on current structures and street names to help with the conceptualization in relationship to current structures. -Graffiti is probably inevitable. Some thought should be given to making this easy to clean/restore. -yes. -Do to the height would extra ree-bar be required for earthquack proofing. -no. -timeline when do you see the project completed? 5. Please indicate whether you support the District proceeding with construct ion of a cenotaph and provide comments as to w hy. - Am in favour of a better thought out project. I feel there is too much rush to g et something.
3 -W e owe our lif estyle to those who went into the military (my parents included among those who enlisted in WWI I) and this is one way to remember and show our respect f or their service. - we owe an outstanding debt to our pioneers and for fathers who foug ht for their ideals and our freedom. Our children should know and remember their history. - I do agree a cenotaph would be a nice and deserved remembrance of the fallen soldiers from Central Saanich. - yes. - yes fitting. - I think our municipality should have a cenotaph. Remind me of the budg et for this - yes but the current design proposed has sig nif icant flaws. - yes I support, start soonest full steam ahead less then 60 days to build and q ualif y for grant. - I support it. - yes with grant and/or donated money. - Def initely support it most municipalities have their own Cenotaph it should have been done when Central Saanich became its own municipality. 6. Is your household located within Central Saanich? Yes 11X No Additional Comments/Suggestions : -It appears that in order to do something we have another flat restricted area as do other area s (Sidney & Colwo od). Barely enoug h space for those involved in the ceremony of remembrance and none for the g eneral public. No one can really see what s happening. T he cenotaph needs to be raised or lowered so the public can witness events. The little grassy area could e asily become a mud hole. The desig n itself is a cross between Cape Canaveral or a larg e thumb. T he maple leaves are a new idea. In the vet s time not really as much a national symbol as now. -Is there still fundraising for this project? -T he Cenotaph allows us a focal point to reflect and talk about our history and ack nowledg e our connec tedness to our past and future. -Ensure that its placement/location will allow f or increased attendance as population grows. Ensure that its surface will be easy to clean o r restore in the event of graffiti (spray paint) T here is no flag pole for the Canadian flag 2. W ill the former min - cenotaph be incorporate d into the new design? 3. T here is no lig ht for night time illumination 4. T he obelisk is too 19 th Century model and to phallic in desig n 5. T he wreath look feels lik e a tang led mess and recalls barbed - wire
4 6. W ill any names of those who served be included? 7. W hat is the timeline for review and who does the reviewing? 8. T he cenotaph is not clearly visible to t he public view by those traveling along W allace Drive. 9. W ill there be a ensigna that this cenotaph is for the people of Central Saanich or will it simply be g eneric pillar with no sp ecial mention of the Community? -W ording Have the writing on the Cen otaph read: Dedicated to all Canadian Armed Forces RCMP and Civilians Killed in W ars and Peacek eeping conflicts T his would cover merchants navy and nurses, first nations and all other ie: special forces, navy airforce etc. I believe this wording would sim plif y naming every unit and division or specialty. Special place ones could be added later when req uired and approved thank you. -I would lik e to see a tribute to all individuals who served this country. I do not think that one g roup - such as the farme rs, as was orig inally suggested should be sing led out f or tribute, above other individuals. Farmers are a part of Central Saanich, as are many other individuals from various professions and walk s of lif e. T hey are all deserving. -W hen I left the Army, I became the Regimental Secretary of T he Canadian Scottish Reg iment (Princess Mary s). I now chair the Canadian Scottish Regimental Heritage Foundation. T he Regiment would like to contribute to the cost of the Cenotaph and be involved in the planning and dedication of the Cenotaph.
