Fall. Supplemental Description This three studio sequence will focus on the design process as a response to issues impacting our environment. These center around three basic issues: land, climate, and materials. Although these will all be addressed in all three quarters, individual topics will create the focus around which each quarter is centered. Course Goals & Objectives: This studio begins an environmentally responsive emphasis. It emphasizes appropriate design with respect to environmental impact and local climate. Specific objectives include: 1. Critical Design Thinking / Understanding of Environmental/Sustainable Design Principles ability to develop meaningful research and apply this knowledge continuously and critically within the design process. 2. Design Order / Conceptual Unity and Clarity of Design Intentions ability to integrate parts into a unified whole, formally yet also in relation to detailed project issues and intentions. 3. Site Understanding and Intervention ability to engage site forces, physical and perceptual conditions within the design
approach, and to make models and drawings that convey site understanding and a sense of place. 4. Design Resolution ability to develop ideas beyond the conceptual level, through detailed studies (drawings, diagrams, models) about environmental and constructional systems, and about human activities and experience. 5. Presentation / Design Communication ability to make meaningful decisions about representation of design ideas in both model and drawing form, using appropriate views and media at appropriate scales, and with appropriate graphic expression. Student Performance Criteria: NAAB (National Accreditation Board) Conditions for Accreditation & Student Performance Criteria: This course addresses student performance criteria required by the NAAB (National Accreditation Board) for professional accreditation of this architecture program. These criteria consist of specified abilities and understandings that graduating students must demonstrate. The following criteria are covered in this course: Primary: Realm B: Integrated Building Practices, Technical Skills and Knowledge: B.3. Sustainability; B.4. Site Design. Secondary: Realm A: Critical Thinking and Representation: A.2. Design Thinking Skills; A.3. Visual Communication Skills; A.5. Investigative Skills. Realm B: Integrated Building Practices, Technical Skills and Knowledge: B.2. Accessibility; B.10. Building Envelope Systems. Realm C: Leadership and Practice: C.2. Human Behavior. The 2009 NAAB Conditions for Accreditation can be found on the NAAB website at The descriptions of the Student Performance Criteria, listed on all course syllabi, can be found in this document. 3 Topical Outline: Fall Quarter This quarter will focus on understanding, analyzing, and siting buildings on the land. It will integrate a structured analysis process that then leads to planning, site, and building concept design in increasing levels of detail. Issues to be reviewed include: Soils Topography Vegetation Runoff/watersheds Water conservation Wetlands Wildlife Sewage Roads and parking Access The problems will focus on developing an understanding of the natural context and then placing a series of buildings in the least invasive manner, treating the land itself as a precious natural resource. Winter Quarter The Winter Quarter will build on the siting, by designing a building that manifests an understanding of the site while developing an understanding of responsible material choices that address: Renewable resources Recycled materials Embodied energy Outgassing and indoor air quality Life Cycle Analysis These will be investigated through the design of a building that will incorporate and respond to these issues. The project will incorporate the principles of sustainability and include lectures and workshops on green systems for building. Spring Quarter The Spring Quarter will look at how buildings can be adapted to respond to natural forces including: Climate responsiveness Sun angles Natural heating Natural ventilation Natural cooling Photovoltaics Wind energy This will be accomplished through the study and design of buildings in greatly varying climatic settings. Required Textbooks & Learning Resources: Cradle to Cradle; William McDonough and Michael Braungart, North Point Press, Sun, Wind & Light Architectural Design Strategies; G. Z. Brown and Mark DeKay, Wiley
Required & Supplemental Materials and Technology: Communication: Computer modeling including Revit and Ecotect will be optional tools for students to use in analyzing sun angles and shading. Students should communicate directly with their individual section instructor. If the section instructor is unavailable or unknown, communication should be sent to the studio coordinator, Robert E. Nalls, at E mail addresses of students within each section will be shared to facilitate collaboration and mutual support. These e mail addresses should not be shared or used for purposes other than those directly related to the studio activities. Everyone in this course is required to use his or her Drexel address for all course communications. Project Evaluation: Grading Matrix: All aspects of projects will be evaluated and form part of the grade. These include research, analysis, materials for interim critiques, verbal presentations, drawings, and models. Course grades will be determined as follows: GRADING POLICY: Design Project One: 25% Design Project Two: 45% Class attendance and contribution: 30% Grading Scale: Excellent Good Adequate Poor Insufficient A+ 4.0 B C D F 0.0 A 4.0 B 3.0 C 2.0 D 1.0 A 3.67 B 2.67 C 1.67 Grading Criteria: All interim and final design work will be graded on the basis of: (1) strength and appropriateness of concept, (2) progression and development of the concept, (3) professionalism, (4) cohesiveness, and (5) quality, completeness and appropriateness of the presentation. Coursework Submission: Instructor Feedback: Attendance: As part of the required coursework all project deliverables as specified per the course assignment(s) will have to be submitted as digital documentation to the department at the end of the quarter. These may include sketches, diagrams, drawings, models or other artifacts. Some of your work might have to be photographed or scanned for this purpose. The files will be used for program assessment/improvement and accreditation purposes and will be archived. Precise instructions concerning file size and access information to our network site or other submission formats will be given in due time. Students will receive interim grades and commentary within the week following the completion each project or interim assignment. Adherence to intermediate, as well as, final design and presentation requirements is essential. The exchange and review of design concepts mandate the need for concurrent development throughout 4
the studio. Studio sessions are used as an opportunity to collaborate and develop positive and productive critical technique. Attendance and involvement by all students for the entire class period is essential and will be a factor in grading. All students with more than one unexcused absence will have their grade reduced by one full letter grade for each additional absence. Detailed course requirements for each problem as well as links to supporting resources can be found at Robert E. Nalls faculty website located at: Studio Culture Policy: Studio Advancement Policy: Academic Integrity Policy: Please visit the following web link for a full description of the Architecture Studio Culture at Drexel University: Studio Culture Policy ure/learning culture policy.asp There are Grade Gate and Sequence Gates at the end of certain studio years. To advance to the next studio level a minimum cumulative studio GPA of 2.5 is necessary. For more information please visit the link below for the Advising Guidelines for your track (2+4 option or PT Evening Option) and year of enrollment: ure/curriculum/ The pursuit of a professional degree in Interiors or Architecture brings with it the demand for integrity, for integrity is at the heart of professional practice. Your commitment to integrity begins here at Drexel University and the work that is required of you. The personal commitment that you make to uphold this policy not only preserves the integrity of the degree you will earn, but also honors the professions you will serve. Thus it is vitally important that you understand and adhere to both the letter and the spirit of the Department of Architecture + Interiors Academic Integrity Policy. The following is to help clarify what constitutes a violation of the Academic Integrity Policy: 1. Copying another student s answers or use of cheat sheets, electronic resources, etc during an exam. 2. Submission of a copy or modified version of a project prepared for another class without explicit permission of the instructor. 3. Assistance with the fabrication of a project including but not limited to the preparation of models or drawings unless approved by the instructor. 4. Copying of another person s designs, compositions, data, research, writings, printed material, electronic material or original ideas without proper acknowledgement is plagiarism. This includes even the use of parts or fragments of someone else s work or ideas. You must never present someone else s work as your own. It is your responsibility to educate yourself on what constitutes plagiarism and acceptable academic practices. Drexel University s Library website offers a 5
useful tutorial on the issues at: Any student found violating this policy will receive, at minimum, an F for the assignment in question, be reported to the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards, and be subjected to University discipline. A second violation of the Academic Integrity Policy can result in expulsion or suspension, which is standard University policy. The University s procedures for dealing with accusations of academic dishonesty can be found at: and Other Academic Policies: Students with Disability Statement: Dropping a Course: Withdrawing from a course: Course Change Policy: The instructors may make revisions and updates to assignments and the schedule during the quarter. These will be communicated in class and posted to the class website when appropriate. Students are responsible for information presented in class as well as on line and when unable to attend class are expected to obtain the information from other students in the section. 6
