2 FP7 Project OpenNESS Operationalisation of Natural Capital and Ecosystem Services hnp:// project.eu is an EU funded project which runs from December 2012 to May 2017 aims to translate the concepts of natural capital and ecosystem services into operagonal frameworks that provide tested, prac(cal and tailored solu(ons for integra(on into land, water and urban management and decision making. is coordinated by the Finnish Environment Ins(tute (SYKE) consists of 35 partners, including 10 SMEs, from 14 European and four non- European countries. 27 OpenNESS case studies A range of socio- ecological systems They are clustered according to the policy and management focus for ecosystem services opera(onaliza(on.

4 Case study Trnava, Slovakia: Landscape-Ecological Planning in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas The main objecgve: EvaluaGon of current state of the ecosystem services framework implementagon in Slovakia and proposal of the appropriate methods for the landscape and spagal planning (as well as environmental impact assessment) at local and regional level in urban and peri- urban areas. Trnava is a historical town in Slovakia District and Region center with strong industrial investments (e.g. Peugeot- Citroen, Samsung, Johns Manville). Adjacentnt area represents intensively managed large- scale farmland. Strong environmental problems due to urban growth and intensive agriculture: air and water pollu(on, agricultural land take, low ecological stability of landscape...

7 OpenNESS study: methods and results Management or policy problem addressed in the case study Imbalances between urban & territorial planning, landscape planning and between real decision- making and landscape management in Slovakia and in the model town ES approach could be an effec(ve tool for solving this imbalances: if it will be incorporate into the planning process. 19 19 Concluding remarks and challenges Main results achieved in Trnava town: Crea(ng a background for new spagal / urban planning approach and decision making process Regularly organized mee(ngs, ac(ve work with a wide range of stakeholders PosiGve feedback from the poten(al users of new methods and tools (researchers, NGOs, town and region officials...). Feedback from the research: The simple valua(on methods are more suitable for prac(cal implementa(on, comprehensive methods are more reliable Stakeholder involvement is a powerful tool, but it has several constrains Usefulness of (ered approach: na(onal ES assessment regional priori(es - local planning process. Main challenges: Need for compeggve solugons - highligh(ng the broader benefits of green investments compared to the technical solu(ons (regula(ng, cultural services...) Financial and insgtugonal promogon and mogvagon from the city administra(on / council is welcome (small grants, awards): ci(es as co- investor for solu(ons Necessity of private funding, use of funding schemes (e.g. offsemng).

In urban areas the focus of NBS is on societal needs - urban health care, urban liveability, urban climate change and socio- economic benefits. NBS can and should be developed in a way that is based on the mulg- funcgonality of green infrastructure. NBS can also improve ecosystem health - with well- planned NBS, green infrastructure is well connected and it preserves the biodiversity.
