4 Climate change challenges in Bratislava Rise in average temperature, more frequent heat waves... in 2017 : - 4 heatwaves - a new record of total number of tropical nights in Bratislava (the minimum temperature does not drop below 20 C): 31 in total Bratislava Airport Monitoring Station... and periods of droughts... - recent period of drought in Bratislava region lasted 226 days (16/12/ /07/2017, SPEI index below -1)... and flash floods from torrential rainfalls... - tendency to occur after heatwaves, causing damage in lower areas, areas with higher share of impermeable surfaces. The city is developing strategies to: Protect the most vulnerable groups of urban population (elderly people, homeless people, children in age up to 6 years, lonely living pensioners, etc.) Minimise the carbon footprint of the city in housing/building, transport, waste treatment sectors Implement green and soft adaptation measures to maximise the use of rain water and green infrastructure

7 The EEA Grants and Norway Grants Represent a contribution of Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway to reducing economic and social disparities and to strengthening bilateral relations with 16 EU countries in Central and Southern Europe and the Baltics. Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway are not EU members but are members to the European Economic Area (EEA) Agreement. This type of EEA Grant distributed in funding period 4 million between projects aiming to find economically efficient and environmentally sustainable adaptation measures to climate change risks through a variety of measures. Eligible applicants: cities or city districts with 20,000 inhabitants and a municipal area 300 ha Current funding period allocates more than 87 million for climate change related projects (besides CE and SE countries also for Portugal, Spain)

11 Implementation of pilot projects in Bratislava is preparing to the climate change -... consisted of: 32 adaptation individual measures implemented in the city on 12 sites by project partners - 2 sustainable drainage systems - 1 green wall - 3 green roofs at 3 sites the impermeable 2017 surfaces were replaced with permeable material - at 3 sites public green including trees was revitalised - at 3 sites public green including trees was newly planted - 1 revitalisation of natural area threatened by erosion - 6 newly created components of green infrastructure

20 Bratislava City subsidy system for sustainable rainwater management installations Small grant system for climate change adaptation measures on household level implemented by Bratislava city since 2016 Subsidy system created as a follow-up action of the Bratislava is preparing to the climate change project Eligible applicants: private home owners, NGOs and businesses The grant covers a maximum of 50% of total costs for the small project implementation and additional service for the public: consultancy for applicants and dissemination activities

21 Bratislava City Subsidy system for sustainable rainwater management installations Subsidy system budget: available total amount of 50,000 in 2016, 40,000 in 2017 for small projects up to maximum 1,000 per application (50% refund of investment costs).
