Extension Office Attendees Joan Dinnel, Beth Fisher, Sharon Jeter, Alice Linhart, Carolyn & Mike Murphy, Nicole Pearson, Esther Retish, Sharon Rude, Barbara Schintler, Linda Schreiber, Jackie Wellborn and Lavon Yeggy. Secretary s Report: The cost of the Tree Grafting class was corrected to read $35/individual; $60/ couple. Minutes of the February meeting were accepted as corrected. Treasurer s Report: February balances (below) were read. Plum Grove: $2, Balance General: $8, Balance Approved Expenses: ========== Plum Grove $30.89 total expenses General - $93.01 total expenses Growing Together Grant- $ total expenses ============ Notes: Barbara Schintler door prizes for Winter Potluck estimate $45 Nicole Pearson Education Sunday Speakers Honorarium - $30 Gloves - $18.01 Carolyn Murphy total $ Growing Together grant (general fund) - $ Plum Grove - $30.89 Those present discussed establishing a petty cash fund to avoid future problems regarding disbursements. Lavon and Carolyn will meet with Gene to discuss an approved JCMG s disbursement (February). March 14, 2018 Steering Committee Meeting 1
2 Old Business Winter Potluck- March 11, Follow up. centered on follow up: Review years-of-service recognition (15-year pin) Changing the name to Awards Banquet from Winter Potluck Eliminating education since Education Sundays now offer four hours of continuing education Using Survey Monkey to determine JCMGs preferences Plant Sale & Flea Market - May 12, 2018 Update on progress. Janice Hining, Stella Clark and Pricilla White will co-chair the annual activity. An initial meeting was held and assignments made. Those who attended report it was well organized is the 11 th Annual Plant Sale. Anniversary was double checked against previous years flyer. MG Educational Sunday- March 18, Preparation needs. Nicole Pearson has 35 MGs signed up. She will need 2-3 helpers. Sharon Jeter volunteered. Four sessions will be offered: 1 2 p.m. President of the Eastern Iowa Orchid Society will present World of Orchids. 2-3 p.m. LCMG Karala McGrail will present Rain Garden Design Basics: Landscape features to capture runoff. 3-4 p.m. LNMG Barb Wing will present Selecting Ground Cover: Lawn Alternates or Garden Enhancements. 4-5 pm.. DNR District Forrester Mark Vitosh will present Growing Healthy Shade Trees. Seed Share 2.0, Sunday, March ICPL from 2-3:30 p.m. 114 seed packets were given out at the Winter Potluck. JCMG is partnering with four groups thus far: IMCC, Lone Tree Senior Dining, a child care center and assisted living group. JCMGs were asked to photograph projects for the summary report. Volunteers are needed to help set up tables and lay out seeds. Sign-in isn t required. The Library will provide a counter. Inventories will be taken following Seed Share 2.0 at ICPL and again after the Plant Sale & Flea Market for the summary report to seed companies participating in the activity. Thank you for your ongoing positive representation. JCMGs were asked to sign the ISU document that we have read the Diversity statement. Demo Garden Work days. Sharon Jeter will host a planning meeting to determine garden layout components on Monday, April 2, at 6 p.m. (Note: this meeting has been rescheduled for Monday, April 6:30pm). Demo Garden Work days will be Monday evenings beginning Monday, April 30, at 5 p.m. Kirkwood Scholarship Request. Moved by Barbara Schintler to approve $2,000 for Kirkwood Scholarships for the academic year; second by Beth Fisher. Moved by Lavon Yeggy to pay for two scholarships, one $1,000 from the General Fund and one $1,000 from Plum Grove; second by Alice Linhart. 4 Master Raingardener Program request from Amy Foster. Lavon Yeggy reported Amy Foster, Coralville Stormwater coordinator, introduced a Master Rain Gardener program administered in Washtenaw County, (Ann Arbor) Michigan. A free online class will be offered Fridays, July 14-August 8. More information here: Nicole Pearson suggested the possibility of offering the program in conjunction with Project GREEN Garden Forums. No action taken as Amy Foster will report in April. Shelter House s Fairweather Lodge request from Lydia Baker. Lavon Yeggy reported the received from Lydia Baker about a Vista/Americorp volunteer program opportunity to establish a gardening group as a non-core project that would provide opportunities for JCMGs. Mary Lou Mayfield has requested $80 to offer 7 education classes to Shelter House Fairweather Lodge residents gardening classes Where Your Food Comes From similar to the Growing Together grant: Grow it. Cook it. Learn. Moved by Carolyn Murphy to approve $80 to provide education classes at Shelter House Fair weather Lodge; second by Jackie Wellborn. Unanimous approval with a request to provide photographs of the classes for documentation. Additional Topics Carolyn Murphy discussed an opportunity for nonprofit organizations to design and purchase metal signs indicating butterfly project area for core projects. Muscatine MGs has ordered from Iowa Prison Industries. The cost is $15 per sign. Linda Schreiber reported IMCC has offered to start tomato seeds for the annual Plant Sale & Flea Market. Linda will coordinate. Lavon Yeggy clarified the Extension Service covers the cost of providing Master Gardening classes at IMCC; all MGs must undergo a background check.
