1 PROJECT
2 HISTORIC PHOTO OF RENWICK HOUSE Built in 1900 for Claremont philanthropist Helen Renwick SOURCE: CLAREMONT HERITAGE circa 1900
3 PROPOSED SETTING: Renwick House is one of four houses known as the Victorians, which were constructed (or moved) here for people connected to the College in its early years between 1890 and The proposed location maintains a relationship between Renwick House and these neighboring houses in the College Avenue context. (South, corner of 1st St, 105 N. College Avenue) Sumner House: Built in 1887 in North Pomona for the family of the founder of Pomona College, Charles Burt Sumner. The house was moved to this location in (Center, 119 N. College Avenue) Cook House: Built in 1895 for Albert J. Cook, a professor of biology who was brought to the faculty by President Baldwin, his brother in law. (North, corner of 2nd St, 137 N. College Avenue) Baldwin House: Built in 1890 for the family of the first president of Pomona College, Cyrus Grandison Baldwin, a Congregational minister who had come to Los Angeles to establish a YMCA.
4 SELECTION OF PROPOSED SITE: The proposed site historically contained a residence similar to those across the street. As the campus expanded, the houses on the east side of College Ave. were demolished, and Second St. east of College Avenue was closed (now a fire lane). The proposed site was selected by Pomona College through the EIR process based on the requirements of the National Register for evaluating moved properties (as interpreted from Criteria Consideration B for Moved Properties). ORIENTATION: Reverses orientation from east-facing to west-facing Maintains similar orientation to the street Maintains same setback along street frontage Provides similar view of corner turret oriented toward the street corner as it is in its current location SETTING AND GENERAL ENVIRONMENT: Eucalyptus trees line parkway with granite and concrete curbs along the east side of College Avenue Similar street landscaping to west side with the Victorians Short distance from the historic site to the proposed site means that the two sites are comparable to that of the historic location and compatible with the property s significance, per National Register Criteria Consideration B. RELATIONSHIP TO HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT AND SETTING: Meets standard with the proposed preparation and landscape design Provides similar lot size to Renwick House s triple lot Allows for a comparable setback from the street Resides within the historic environment of Renwick House Maintains a similar proximity to the buildings in its current context Retains meaningful relationship to Pomona College, College Ave, and houses of Helen Renwick s peers and neighbors EXISTING CONDITION AT PROPOSED LOCATION
