Extension Office Attendees Sharon Jeter, Barb Krug, Lavon Yeggy, Angela Murphy, Carolyn Murphy, Jackie Wellborn, Jo Verts, Chuck Verts, Betty Kelly, Sandy Steil, Alice Linhart, Jane Zukin, Sandy Gannon, Sherlyn Flesher, Joan Dinnel, Shannon Bielicke Secretary s Report: from last meeting approval. Approved unanimously. Treasurer s Report: Barb Krug Plum Grove: $3, General: $12, About $5,000 income from the Plant Sale. Interested in a report for the amounts spent on Background checks. Barb or Lavon will contact Jacky at extension to see if it i s possible to get a report. $400 total was approved for a check to be cut to Brenda at the Ag. Association to go towards purchasing butterflies for the county fair butterfly house exhibit. New Receipts/ Bills- Approved. Nicole Pearson, International conference $330 General Fund Margaret Hibbs, Plum Grove Supplies $30.99 Plum Grove Fund Carolyn Murphy, Plum Grove Heirloom Rose $32 Plum Grove Fund Joan Dinnel, Fairgrounds Supplies $40.02 General Fund Laura Hahn, Plant Sale Supplies $ General Fund Lavon Yeggy, International conference $330 General Fund Jane Zukin, Ecumenical Towers Supplies $66.71 General Fund Plum Grove $ total expenses General - $62.99 total expenses Old Business Kirkwood Scholarship Foundation approved $2,000 for 4 students. Follow up needed with paperwork turned in to Jacky at the extension office. Lavon will follow up with Jacky and Shannon at the extension office. Bur Oak Trust request for funding. Further discussion needed and paperwork needs turned in to Jacky at the extension office if passed. 1
2 Lavon will follow up on this by seeing what donation options might be and it will be further discussed at the August meeting. Consideration to be discussed might include planting a Bur Oak Trust tree on the fairgrounds or at the extension office or a finan cial donation. Master Gardener Summer Webinar series. Consideration of offering them in the Fall. Approved. Cost $75 for all 3 sessions to be paid to campus from the MG General f und. Shannon has signed up to receive the recorded webinars and it was decided to offer the 3 sessions this fall. Dates to be determined. Sessions will be offered to Johnson County Master Gardeners only at no charge. will be considered in future years for opening it to the public but not at this time. Potluck Dates being considered are September 20 th (preferred) or September 13 th (as a backup). Barb has asked Caleb Ryder a Johnson County MG to perform blues music. Non-Core Project Updates The Subcommittee is working on putting together a procedure manual discussing core and non-core projects. Shannon recommended 1-2 times a year having a meeting/class to promote and explain core and non-core projects and address any approvals outside of the normal steering committee meeting dates might be an option. The project leaders will continue to explain and promote projects to the interns and at Fall training. Outstanding Master Gardener Update Information packets/missing information ( was sent out)/official letter to those that have withdrawn or are not responding. Once more complete an updated roster can be provided. There are a handful of people to turn in information. Shannon has continued to them and if anyone needs more information please contact her. Fall Master Gardener training classes. Preparation is beginning. The schedule and application packet is in the process of being put together. Sha nnon and Nicole are working on recruiting new face to face speakers in order to give variety for the long term Master Gardeners that attend for continuing education hours. Proposal of creating a Johnson County Master Gardener webpage connected to the Johnson County Extension webpage as a location to post Newsletter, Meeting Notes, etc. to help with better access to information. 2
3 This webpage was approved and will be a work in progress. Please contact Shannon at the extension office if you have any suggestions. Link was resent to the Steering Committee for review and Shannon will work on making it more active. MG garden walks this summer. Suggestion was made that private yard walks are not available maybe MG core project walk-throughs might be considered. : Lavon and Sharon will be working on organizing garden walks be at the Core project sights possibly in August. There was suggestions made about having a raffle based on a bingo card or scavenger hunt which people are able to document how many locations they attended during a certain time period. More details to be discussed in the future. Date for Next Meeting: August 12 th, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. Thymes Deadline: June 25 th, 2015 New Business Demonstration Garden Banner Purchase of a banner under $150 was approved. Staples or Zephyrs will be looked into for a new banner by county fair. Once it is decided on that company can be directed to Shannon so that she can get them the appropriate logo file type and confirm permission of use. Fairgrounds Maintenance and group leadership organization s have been sent out. If interested in helping in any capac ity please contact the project leaders. Requesting Funds Carolyn Murphy s request to spend $400 total towards the purchase of butterflies for the butterfly house during the county fair was approved. Susan DeBlieck from ISU was invited to come to the county fair to see the Butterfly house. 3
4 Other Items: ISU is having a Master Gardener Photo Contest. Please see the Iowa Master Gardener Newsletter (The ISU State MG Newsletter) for more details. A replacement bench is being purchased for the Demo Garden. Barb Krug is working on this. Betty handed out Plum Grove Tasting Flyers to be put up. She is in need of potted plant arrangements to be used as door prizes. She will have Shannon a request out for helpers at the Tasting. Memorial for Libby Stroud has been ordered by Betty. We will work on contacting the family so that they are notified. Project Green needs 4-5 more volunteers for June 20 th (5:30-8pm shift). request will be sent again. Sandy Steil recommended a speaker for the Fall training class or a future education day. Subject would be on Storm Water management. She will Shannon again with the details. about having another Johnson County Master Gardener Education day concluded that it would be a good thing to do. More details will be discussed at a later date. Committee Reports Attended Displays - Joann & Chuck Verts- Getting ready for county fair & Taste of Plum Grove. Demonstration Garden - Sherlyn Flesher, Jon and Kristel Saxton- Continuing on maintenance. Firefighter Memorial - Barb Schintler Had big spring planting. Fair Grounds Beautification Lavon Yeggy, Mardi Rasmussen rain garden Joan Dinnel - flower garden Johnson County Fair/4-H Buckets of Flowers, Scarecrow, & Misc. Mary Lou Gay, Lavon, plus need a new coordinator. *Planted Hostas and other plants on the fairgrounds, at the horse arena, and butterfly house. Hortline Esther Retish, Lynn Todd Okay. Raptor Center - Alice Linhart, Karole Fuller Planted a few weeks ago. Continuing weeding and watering. Used a Deer Repel Mix which seems to be working well. Plum Grove & Taste of the Garden - Betty Kelly, Joanne Leach, Lavon Yeggy, Carolyn Murphy- Continuing to promote the 20 th annual Plum Grove Tasting. Planted a new Heirloom rose. 4
5 Speakers Bureau Jackie Wellborn Jane Zukin did a talk on Low Maintenance gardening to the Sertoma Club. Sharon is working on a talk to caregivers about the benefits of gardening. Amey Kollar from extension requested Jackie to speak to a group of kids about gardening and where food comes from. Thymes- Jan Denehy Continue to submit articles. Hospice Garden at Willow Creek Park - Melanie Haupert Meets on Thursdays. The added some Hostas and to have a list of hostas which are planted if interested. Melanie did a talk about gardening with kids and they planted a bucket at the Heritage Christian s School. They would like to submit it at the county fair under Melanie s name. Ecumenical Towers - Jane Zukin A lot of building construction will be occurring and gardens may be affected. She will keep us updated. Solon High School - Tracy Hufford-Okay. Coralville Historical School House - Cindy Parsons Okay. Fundraising/Flea Market - Barb Krug- Plant Sale did well. Butterfly Garden at Fairgrounds: Carolyn Murphy, Barb Krug, Mike Murphy- Carolyn requested more help for the butterfly house for fair. Volunteer Hours Loren Leach Okay. Intern Class and Training - Nicole Pearson Okay. Social Events (Winter Potluck etc.) Steering Committee- Okay. Bucket of Flower, 4-H Award, and Rain Garden- Leader needs recruited?/lavon Yeggy Contact Lavon if you are wanting to help. Non-Core: Mark Twain People s Garden Julie Hegmann Doing Construction sot gardens are on hold. Downtown City Gardens Linda Schreiber Okay. Oaknoll Garden Project Marilou Gay and someone is helping her. Vicki Siefers might be helping.
