2 About Permaculture Permaculture is the study and practice of sustainable living. A Permaculture Design Course (PDC) is an arrangement of sustainable living practices and design strategies to apply to a particular piece of land. In recent decades, permaculture has grown into a worldwide movement of people learning about and living off the land. This streamlined course will cover the basics of permaculture design and walk you through the process of creating a permaculture site design. In over 20 videos and 4 hours of white- board animated video content, each chapter will cover the basics of each area of permaculture design: what it is, how it is useful and how one can apply that concept to the land. In practical courses, students gain practical hands- on experience from the day s lesson as it relates to the needs of the site. This course will be limited, by nature, to online course videos and correspondence. Permaculture is many things to many people. It s a design science, a study of nature, an independent practice and a community. The following words further describe what Permaculture is as it relates to common patterns found in nature. Permaculture begins with a point and grows exponentially in all directions. Permaculture is Reason Process Perspective Frequency Community Collection Union or helix Natural pattern Point (1D) Line (2D) Branch (2D) Wave (2D) Circle (3D) Cylinder (4D) Torus (5D) To distinguish this practice from other things, the following words describe what Permaculture is not: Permaculture is not Formal Government Religion Corporation Principles A principle is a fundamental proposition that serve as the foundation for a system or chain of reasoning. Permaculture principles are as follows: Earthworks Capture rainwater in the soil and provide access to the site Natural building Provide housing for people and animals Water Catch, clean, conserve and reuse water Sanitation Produce no waste
3 Soil Build soil Microorganisms Grow microorganisms Nursery Save seeds and propagate plants Plants Grow and harvest edible plants Trees Grow useful trees and food forests Insects Raise beneficial insects and keep pests away Animals Raise healthy animals using the resources available Kitchen Prepare, ferment or preserve food grown on site Appropriate technology Use energy efficiently Economics Create a surplus Ethics Ethics are moral principles that govern a person s behavior. There are three aspects to the ethics of permaculture: People care Be considerate of everyone s time, interests, thoughts and actions, including our own Earth care Care for the earth, the animals, the plants, trees, fungi, microbes, water, air Fair share Fairly distribute growth/surplus among humans and nature
4 Permaville Course Strategies of permaculture design The Permaville course provides the basics of permaculture, the study and practice of sustainable living. In this self- paced online course, students will gain a basic understanding of permaculture principles and practices and create a permaculture design. Learn permaculture design strategies from real life examples from permaculture projects around the world. You ll learn the basics of: o Filtering water o Building with earth o Making compost and gardens o Raising fish, insects and animals o Simple machines In over 20 white- board animated videos, you will receive over 4 hours of well- researched content about each area of focus. This course is will get you the info you need in a form to hold it together. Learn how to live off the land with strategies of permaculture design Come with a piece of land in mind or work with a group. By the end of the course, you will have all the knowledge needed to make a comprehensive permaculture site design. Who is the target audience for this course? This course is also for people who are interested in learning the basics of permaculture and self- reliant living and who may not have time to attend a permaculture design course in- person. This course is for anyone ages 10 and up. Does the Permaville Course count as a Permaculture Design Course certificate? This course meets the basic requirements for a Permaculture Design Certificate. In- person permaculture design courses are highly recommended for hands- on experience and group discussions. There is no substitution for in- person learning environments. What are the assessment criteria for certification?
