CONTENTS 1. INTRODUCTION: APPROACH FRAMEWORK 2. ENVISION RATING SYSTEM FOR SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE 3. DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION EXAMPLES
1 INTRODUCTION Approach Framework
INTRODUCTION Approach Framework Zofnass Program & Sustainable Development Sustainability The Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at Harvard University provides a series of tools and resources on sustainable development in contemporary cities - for existing, expanding or new urban developments EXISTING EXPANDING OR NEW URBAN DEVELOPMENTS
INTRODUCTION Approach Framework Need for Integrated planning across scales Buildings LEED or similar Rating Systems Implementation of Sustainability Principles Infrastructure Projects Envision Rating System City scale Planning Zofnass Sustainable Planning
INTRODUCTION Approach Framework Leadership towards sustainability Are we doing the project right? Are we doing the right project? With respect to sustainable development, our approach concerns the synthesis of the three broad disciplines. For all projects, including new cities, urban developments in existing cities, and infrastructure projects, we emphasize on leadership for the best collaboration of stakeholders, management and planning of the project towards sustainability. Leadership implies communication and collaboration early on, involve a wide variety of people in creating ideas for the project, and understand the long-term, holistic view of the project and its life cycle. Therefore, we need to answer two questions:
INTRODUCTION Approach Framework The tools A broad set of tools has been developed to control our framework on sustainable infrastructure and cities: Envision Checklist is an educational tool that helps users become familiar with the sustainability aspects of infrastructure project design. Envision Rating System is both an assessment tool for sustainable infrastructure projects and a template for planning, designing and constructing sustainable projects. The Zofnass Tool for Sustainable City Planning concerns city scale, the development of planning and design guidelines for the infrastructure systems, best practices, and projective design solutions.
INTRODUCTION Approach Framework The importance of infrastructure Urban development and infrastructure are connected: The quality and type of services provided by infrastructure will affect the financial development of the city and in turn its social environment FINANCIAL DEVELOPMENT INFRASTRUCTURE SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT
2 ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure The Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure The Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure was established in Develops the know-how, tools and methodologies for planning and evaluation of all urban infrastructure. Focuses on the integration of sustainable infrastructure planning into the urban design. ZOFNASS PROGRAM FOR SUSTAINABLE INFRASTRUCTURE Source:
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure The Purpose of Envision Envision is the product of a joint collaboration between the Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design and the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure. The purpose of Envision is to help users determine the extent to which their proposed infrastructure design truly contributes to conditions of sustainability. The purpose of Envision is to initiate a systemic change... to transform the way infrastructure is designed, built, and operated. William Bertera, Executive Director, ISI
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure The Envision Rating System Envision covers the physical components of infrastructure that make up the built environment. Provides a holistic framework for evaluating and rating the community, environmental, and economic benefits of all types and sizes of infrastructure projects. Evaluates, grades, and gives recognition to infrastructure projects that use transformational, collaborative approaches to assess the sustainability indicators over the course of the project's life cycle. Are we doing the project right? Are we doing the right project?
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure The Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure A holistic approach Analyzing city each component requires engagement with a broad range of inter-related issues. Sustainability is not primarily a technological issue. Policy and administration goals are also needed to create the necessary social context
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure The Zofnass Program for Sustainable Infrastructure A holistic approach The program s approach focuses on 5 categories of impact: QUALITY OF LIFE RESOURCE ALLOCATION NATURAL WORLD CLIMATE & RISK LEADERSHIP And 7 infrastructure systems: -Wind -Solar -Biomass -Other -Potable Water Distribution -Capture &Storage -Water Reuse -Stormwater Management -Flood Control -Other -Eco-Agriculture -Food Distribution -Imported food -Self sufficient small farms -Indigenous Fruit Nurseries -Other -Solid Waste -Recycling -Hazardous Waste -Collection and TTransfer -Other -Roads -Highways -Biker/ Pedestrian -Railways -Public Transit -Other -Public Realm -Parks -Ecosystem -Services -Other -Telecom. -Internet/Phone -Satellites -Data Centers -Sensors -Other
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure Organization and structure - Credits There are 60 credits in all. A credit comprises a sustainability indicator on an aspect of environmental, social, or economic concern.
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure Levels of achievement A five-point scale allows project teams the flexibility to establish achievement levels that are within the project budget and scope: RESTORATIVE Performance that restores natural or social systems CONSERVING Performance that has achieved essentially zero impact SUPERIOR Sustainable performance that is noteworthy ENHANCED Indications that superior performance is within reach IMPROVED Performance that is at or above conventional
ENVISION Rating System for Sustainable Infrastructure Envision Checklist The Envision Checklist is an educational tool that helps users become familiar with the sustainability aspects of infrastructure project design. It can be used as a stand-alone assessment to quickly compare project alternatives or to prepare for a more detailed assessment. Through a set of assessment questions, Envision Checklist provides quantitative output on Envision sustainability categories: 100% 80% 60% 40% 20% 0% Yes 77% Yes 63% Yes 51% Yes 28% Yes 55%

As a result, Envision could expand the breadth of the contribution to sustainability by: Meeting the city s main objectives regarding the reduction of private vehicles use and the upgrading of the air quality Supporting the specific urban planning targets of the Panepistimiou area Are we doing the project right? Are we doing the right project?
CONCLUSION Sustainable infrastructure The framework of Envision, provides a set of multiple tools and methodologies to assess the sustainability of infrastructures and urban developments. and, entails a respective set of sustainable solutions for the best planning and performance in terms of economic, environmental and social sustainability.
