It is open at the bottom. The driving force is gravity. Because the world is not perfect, nor is sealing, it is also an air duct that conveys air. Natural air flow is upwards from the bottom. Guess what s at the bottom? Guess what it smells like? 3

5 YIIIKES! When really neglected they look like this. One style of collection at the bottom is an open dumpster. 5

It is normally surrounded on all sides by block wall.

6 The other style of collection at the bottom is a trash compactor. This is what a trash chute looks like before it is fully sealed in construction. It is normally surrounded on all sides by block wall. This is a diagram of a trash chute offset fitting available for purchase through a manufacturer. Offsets in trash chutes are bad business. There is language in various portions of building code that require shafts NOT to have offsets. 6

11 WARNING!!!!!! Major pitfalls to watch out for. Where does the water go? Every trash room should have a floor drain. Not everyone does. Not every floor drain.drains. 11

12 Photoelectric smoke detectors can t tell the difference between steam and smoke. DO NOT PUT TRASH IN TRASH CHUTE. TEMPORARILY OUT OF SERVICE. TECHNICIANS WORKING BELOW. Falling Trash Lock-out- Tag Out 12
