3 Introduction: In a Soils Laboratory, the Compaction Penetration test on solids are carried out regularly. This automatic soil compactor replaces the hand compaction procedure as specified for dry density moisture content relationship of soil. With 4 inter changeable rammer feet provided and two stroke lengths available, the apparatus can be used to carry out all the normal compaction operations required in soil testing laboratories. Description: The Automatic Compactor is capable of both light and heavy compaction using either 100mm dia or 150mm dia compaction moulds. The height of drop of the 50mm rammer can be set either at 300mm or 450mm as per requirements. The machine is provided with a standard rammer weighing 2.5kg for conducting light compaction and its weight can be increased to 4.5kg for heavy compaction tests by attaching additional rods supplied with it. When using 100mm diameter mould the rammer carriage is locked in one position and the total area of the mould is compacted in about 25 strokes. The No. of strokes can be programmed through the counter with digital display. A selector switch is provided on the control panel for selection between the 100mm dia. mould or 150mm dia. mould. For 150m dia mould the rammer carriage shifts radically by 25mm to give out 8 blows within the diameter of 100mm and 17 blows beyond 100mm dia (between 100mm and 150mm). This sequence is repeated until the rammer completes 55 blows, after which the machine automatically stops

4 Test Procedure: Fix the required mould base on the rotating disc of the compactor and secure it with the bolts. Put the soil sample into the mould to the required initial level. The rammer assembly consists of ratchet and pawl arrangement to lift it from the top of the soil layer. As and when the rammer reaches the height of 310 and 450mm the pawl releases the hammer allowing it to fall freely under its own weight. The release mechanism is operated by an arm moving up and down. Set the required no of blows on the controller with digital display.** The machine will now compact the soil in the mould with the pre-set number of strokes and switch itself off when this is done. Repeat the cycle if and as required. Maintenance: 1. Never operate the machine without a padding layer of soil in the mould. 2. Align and fix mould and base plate firmly before starting operation. 3. Never attempt to set the counter with the motor switched on switch off each time. 4. On first receiving the machine, remove the dust prevention grease from the side pillars and rammer rod. ** Refer to Counter Operation at the back of this handbook - 2 -

5 5. Clean and lubricate the side pillars and rammer rod regularly with oil or light grease. Lubricate pivot points, pawl and ratchet with few drops of oil regularly. Clean rammer feet after use. Please note that the machine itself may differ slightly from that shown

6 Counter Operation When you switch on the device, you will see the screen shown in Figure 1. To activate the counter, push the stop button. This will reset the counter and activate the screen. Figure -1- After the stop button is pushed, The blow monitoring menu appears on the screen.(figure 2) In this menu you can see the total, ınner and outer blows on the screen. To change the blows, you must push 4th( ) button, as indicated, then the Blow Set Menu is displayed. (Figure 3) Figure -2- In this menu, to programme blow settings the user must push both the 4th( ) and the white buttons at the same time for at least 5 seconds. Figure -3-

7 The user can change the total (general) blows by using the +,- (, ) buttons, To set the ınner and outer blows, the user must push the (, ) buttons and then select the ınner or outer subheads. Finally, the user can set blows by using the +,- (, ) buttons. Figure -4- When finished, push the menu/ok button to save the data. Push the stop button to return to the blow monitoring menu.
