There are so many different types of packaging that it can be hard to determine what is and is not recyclable. And who doesn t wish that every paper, plastic, metal and glass product could be recycled. YES? NO? ELP REDUCE CONTAMINATION IN E RECYCLING STREAM BY FOLLOWING ESE SIMPLE RULES: Only recycle EMPTY bottles, cans, and cartons. Keep food and liquids out of your recycle cart. Never bag recyclables in plastic bags. Never place loose plastic bags in your recycle cart. Store your recycle cart on your property in between your collection days so no one else can put contaminants in your cart. Donate clothing and other reusable household items. owever, items that are not accepted in the purple recycle carts are considered contaminants and ultimately make recycling harder for the sorting facility. While Denver residents do a good job of keeping the recycling stream clean, there is room for improvement. To find a list of accepted materials, see page of this newsletter. Call us with questions or us a photo of any item that you aren t sure is recyclable. The most common contaminants found in recycle carts are: Clothing Food Napkins Non-rigid plastics (toothpaste tubes) Paper towels Plastic bags Scrap metal Styrofoam Tanglers (cords, hoses) Yard debris NEVER place these items in your purple recycle cart. ' PAPER CUPS ARE NOW ACCEPTED IN YOUR PURPLE RECYCLE CART Even though you can now recycle paper cups, using a reusable cup is still the best choice. Remember, you can only recycle EMPTY cups. Cardboard sleeves are recyclable but must be separated from the cup.. Trees and Shrubs Blocking Collection Locations. Styrofoam cups are not accepted in your purple recycle cart. That s why Denver Recycles is now accepting paper cups for recycling. Obstructions such as vehicles, fences, trees, poles, overhangs, mailboxes, extra trash and other carts can prevent automated trucks from emptying your carts. Denver property owners are responsible for pruning and removing overgrown trees and vegetation in and/or blocking the public right-of-way. The public right-of-way extends from the back of your property line to the center of the alley, and from the front and sides of your property line to the curb. C OLD Throw lids, straws, and plastic stirrers in your trash cart. The addition of paper cups to the recycling program is made possible by a partnership between Denver Recycles, Alpine Waste and Recycling, Sustana and the Foodservice Packaging Institute. ALL glass placed in your purple recycle cart is turned into glass cullet at Momentum Recycling in Broomfield. And that cullet is sent to bottling companies and made into new glass bottles at two bottle manufacturers right here in Colorado. Did You Know? Every glass bottle placed in a purple recycle cart is turned into a new bottle right here in Colorado! Close the glass loop by always recycling your glass and buying products in recyclable glass. Bagged recyclables are NOT recycled. When they reach the recycling facility, they must be thrown away because it is a health and safety concern for facility workers. If you collect recyclables in a plastic bag, empty the contents straight into the recycle cart and place the bag in the trash. No Solid Waste Management collections. P lace trees at your trash set-out location by a.m. on your scheduled trash collection day. N O artificial or flocked trees will be accepted. D o NOT place trees inside bags or collection carts. Plastic bags are NOT recyclable in your purple recycle cart. They get caught in the sorting equipment at the recycling facility and can cause the entire facility to shut down. Plastic bags should be reused, taken back to grocery or retail stores for recycling, or as a last resort, thrown in the trash. NEVER place your compostables in plastic bags. Plastic bags do NOT break down at the compost facility. Instead, they break into smaller pieces of plastic which contaminate the compost piles at the facility making that compost unusable. Place your compostable items straight into the compost cart, or if you must bag your food scraps, use paper bags or BPI certified compostable bags. Every year, Denver Solid Waste Management offers Denver residents the opportunity to dispose of their household trash and yard debris in a responsible way at the annual Great Denver Cleanup (GDC). The GDC offers multiple free drop sites for household items to be either donated for reuse, recycled, composted, or taken to the landfill.
