4 Signing up for EcoGrid Customers on Bornholm have signed up by filling out an online-questionnaire at the Danish website The purpose of the EcoGrid questionnaire is to: Increase the knowledge of the Bornholm electricity customers, EcoGrid participants and potential smart grid customers Identify customers that technically are qualified for EcoGrid participation Clarify the need for further EcoGrid acquisition/recruitment activities 4

6 Recruited Participants 1,900 households have signed up* ~15% with heat pumps (85% of total heat pump stock of Bornholm) ~ 50% with electric heating ~ 400 have signed out** 200 were technically disqualified 200 decided to drop-out * Status: June 2014 ** 150 were moved to the Automated households covers the group of ~700 homes with automation equipment from IBM and ~500 participants with home automation equipment from Siemens Reference group

7 EcoGrid Customer Survey: Key Findings (Sample: 925 of 1,900 participants) Knowledge Participants indicate that they have some basic knowledge of their consumption and the cost of electricity, but are unfamiliar with concepts such as baseload and demand response Flexibility Appliances with most potential to change time of use are dishwasher, washing machine, dryer and electric heating. Less flexible in time of use are TV and PC Feedback system At the start of the project, 34% of the respondents in the survey expect to use the internet portal several times a day, 30% expect to use it daily Automatic and remote control Besides automated control of their heating, respondents are interested to have their washing machine (65%) and dishwasher automatically controlled as well (63%). They have less interest in automatic control of their refrigerators and freezers. Similar preferences exist for remote control 7

9 Energy Consciousness Energy behaviour/consumption patterns of the households 87% are at home on weekdays evenings/nights, 73% during the weekends => highest potential for manual response to price signals Use mainly electricity for cooking (89%) Almost half of the participants are at home during regular working hours Activities already carried out Top 1: shifting to energy saving light bulbs (66%) 41% had recently installed a heat pump More than half had replaced windows/ improved insulation Self-reported knowledge of consumption Approx. 1/3 knows the cost of a kwh of electricity and electricity usage last month 13% were aware of the base load consumption of their house 12% were aware of the consumption of their electric household appliances 9
