WELCOME TO THE EASTERN SECTION CODE BREAKFAST CODE BREAKFAST QUESTIONS FOR THE EASTERN SECTION ANNUAL MEETING 93 rd ANNUAL EASTERN SECTION MEETING, KING OF PRUSSIA, PA RESIDENTIAL ALL QUESTIONS BASED ON THE 2017 NEC FRIDAY 1. In a dwelling unit bathroom a 2- gang plastic device box containing a light switch and an exhaust fan timer switch is located three feet from a hydromassage bathtub. Are any bonding connections required for this switch and control? If yes, describe how the connections are to be made. 2. Does a four inch long, 1- inch trade size RMC (1 short nipple) connecting a PV disconnect to a utility meter enclosure as would be the case when making a supply side connection of a PV system, as per Articles 705 and 690, require bonding locknuts or are standard locknuts acceptable? Assume there are no concentric or eccentric knockouts encountered. 3. If the spaces adjacent to each side of a dishwasher are drawer units, is it permissible to route the cord through one of the drawer units and install the receptacle in the second cabinet away from the dishwasher? 4. Would it be permissible to hard- wire the dishwasher in question 3? If so, under what conditions? 5. A contractor installed a 125- volt, 15- ampere grounded receptacle to replace a 125- volt, 15- ampere ungrounded receptacle in a dwelling unit bedroom. The contractor installed a 14 AWG equipment grounding conductor (EGC) from the receptacle box to the first five feet of water piping in the basement of the dwelling. The inspector rejected the installation and required the contractor to install a 6 AWG EGC because the inspector felt that the EGC was subject to physical damage. Was the inspector correct? OVER
6. Does the wall- mounted blower unit of a split- system HVAC system require a disconnect within sight of the blower unit inside the dwelling. Assume the blower unit consumes 725 volt- amperes of energy and contains a ¼ HP motor operating at 125- volts. Would a disconnect be required if the blower unit operated at 24- volts? 7. A contractor installed a listed, ¾ diameter, ten- foot ground rod inside the electrical room of a department store. He drove the rod to a depth of 9 feet, leaving 1 foot above the earth floor. (This is an old South Philadelphia mob headquarters repurposed as retail space.) She then installed a 4 AWG aluminum grounding electrode conductor (GEC) from the service equipment to the ground rod. Neither the ground rod nor the grounding electrode connection are subject to physical damage. Is this installation code compliant? If the electrical room had a 4 thick concrete slab floor, would that change the answer? 8. An inspector rejected an installation because the electrical contractor ran a white THWN 6 AWG stranded copper conductor to a ground rod. The inspector stated that the conductor had to be green. Was the inspector, who incidentally was an old South Philly mobster, correct? 9. Is a red emergency disconnect switch required at the top of the basement stairs, in a dwelling unit, if the basement has a oil burner? What about a gas- fired central heating unit? What standard governs this intallation? 10. At a dwelling unit, a contractor installed a 100- ampere service and connected the service conductors to a 100- ampere, four- position service- rated panelboard in the basement in which a 100- amp two- pole breaker was installed. He then ran 2 AWG aluminum SER cable to a panelboard on the first floor of the building. The panelboard on the first floor was properly wired as a load- side panel. The inspector, who has since met with an untimely end involving cement sneakers, turned down the installation. She required the contractor to run 1 AWG aluminum conductors from the main panel to the sub- panel on the first floor citing Table (B)(16). Was the inspector correct? 11. A split- level home has a staircase with an entry at the middle landing between the upper and lower floors. The contractor installed a three- way dimmer switch at the top of the stairs, a four- way snap switch at the landing, and a three- way snap switch at the lower level. Is the contractor likely to pass his final inspection?
WELCOME TO THE EASTERN SECTION CODE BREAKFAST CODE BREAKFAST QUESTIONS FOR THE EASTERN SECTION ANNUAL MEETING 93 rd ANNUAL EASTERN SECTION MEETING, KING OF PRUSSIA, PA COMMERCIAL ALL QUESTIONS BASED ON THE 2017 NEC SATURDAY 1. A contractor renovated existing 2 x 4 lay- in fluorescent luminaires. She removed the ballasts and retrofitted the luminaires with LED double- ended lamps. These lamps fit into the same non- shunted T- 8 lampholder as the original ballasted fluorescent tubes. The installation instructions for the lamps called for the 125- volt power to be connected directly to the lampholders. Are these replacement lamps listed? Is there a concern with the wrong lamps being used as replacements in the future as a T- 8 fluorescent lamp will fit into the same lampholder as a 125- volt LED retrofit lamp that does not require a ballast? Do the double ended lamps require a disconnect for each luminaire per Section (G)? 2. A show window at a retail establishment is five feet wide. During the rough inspection the inspector pointed out the need for at least one 125- volt, 15- or 20- ampere rated receptacle outlet within 18 of the top of the show window. The contractor objected saying that such a receptacle is not required unless the show window is over six linear feet wide. 3. A small conference room that requires emergency illumination has four 2 x 4 lay- in, two- tube fluorescent luminaires in the ceiling. One of these luminaires has an emergency ballast in it that illuminates a single tube in the event of a power failure. Does this installation satisfy the minimum requirements of the NEC? 4. What is the definition of a lighting element as used in Section OVER
5. Is an array of 16 LEDs connected to a single driver considered to be one lighting element or sixteen lighting elements? 6. A contractor installed a hard- wired connection, with a switch, to a vending machine at the entrance to a shopping mall. Next to that, he hard- wired, with a switch, a connection to a kiddie horse ride. At the time of the final inspection the inspector red tagged the installation. The inspector cited the need for GFCI protection for both machines. Was the inspector correct? 7. Is it permissible to use aluminum EMT fittings with stainless steel EMT? 8. A contractor wired a rental space that will be a chiropractor s office, providing new circuits for the accounting office, the waiting room, and the office of the head of the HR department. The circuits fed new receptacles and new lighting. He installed tamper- resistant receptacles in the waiting room and standard receptacles in the two offices. The inspector wrote a violation at the time of the final inspection stating that all of the new receptacles had to be tamper- resistant. Is the inspector out of his mind? 9. Section (H)(2) requires conductors in parallel to be the same length. In reality, how much tolerance of length differential is permitted? 10. A contractor and her apprentice, a fella by the name of Rocky Balboa, at a commercial printing company, were contracted to withdraw a bucket out of a MCC and replace the existing 300- ampere circuit breaker with a 250- ampere circuit breaker and reconnect the existing wires to the new circuit breaker. Assume that the wiring connections are legal. The inspector red- tagged the installation citing the need to now mark the equipment as Reconditioned. Was the contractor correct in calling the inspector a dimwit?
WELCOME TO THE EASTERN SECTION CODE BREAKFAST CODE BREAKFAST QUESTIONS FOR THE EASTERN SECTION ANNUAL MEETING 93 rd ANNUAL EASTERN SECTION MEETING, KING OF PRUSSIA, PA POT LUCK ALL QUESTIONS BASED ON THE 2017 NEC SUNDAY 1. A contractor makes up the connections to interconnect the two halves of a factory- inspected modular home. The factory inspection label and information sheet is located on the electrical panel. After installation of a service to the home, he calls for a final inspection. The inspector will not approve the job, as the receptacle under the metallic kitchen sink is not GFCI protected. Citing that the receptacle is within six feet of the top inside edge of the metallic sink, the inspector said GFCI protection must be provided. The contractor argued that a cord would need to pass through a cabinet door to reach from the top inside edge of the sink to the receptacle. If the cord has to pass through a door, then the receptacle does not need GFCI protection. Who is correct? 2. A building inspector told me that in order to determine if a testing laboratory is recognized, that is, they are the real deal, that I should go to the OSHA website. Can this ja- moke* possibly be correct? 3. In an electrical vault with volt transformers and 480- volt switchgear, an inspector required a contractor to install a partition between the high- voltage equipment and the low- voltage equipment. The contractor responded Outta which fairy tale didja dig this little gem from? The inspector told him to read his NEC. Is there such a rule in the NEC? 4. A homeowner, widely known to be a Betty Crocker groupie, purchased a commercial mixer for her home. The installation instructions called for the appliance to be supplied by an individual branch circuit rated at 125- volts, 15- amperes. An electrical contractor installed a GFCI protected 125- volt, 15- ampere individual branch circuit with a single receptacle on the wall above the kitchen countertop to supply the appliance. Two 20- ampere small appliance branch circuits supply the remaining existing counter receptacles. The electrical inspector failed the installation claiming that all receptacles that serve the kitchen counter must be on a small appliance branch circuit rated at 20- amperes. Is the inspector wrong, or is the electrician correct? OVER
5. A contractor replaced twenty 50- ampere, 250- volt, 3- pole, 4- wire site receptacles at an RV park. Do these receptacles require GFCI protection? 6. A contractor, clearly out of his ever- loving mind, installed a 100- ampere aluminum SER cable underground, in a raceway, for a construction office trailer. Jimmy Rogers, being the inspector of record, told the contractor that he would approve it. Did Jimmy make the correct call? 7. As the inspector arrived on site and poured himself a cup of coffee, he casually asked the contractor to show him the torque screwdriver that was used to terminate the grounded conductors in the panelboards. What in tarnation are you going on about? asked the electrician, clearly unaware. The inspector repeated his request and, upon learning that no such tool was ever on site, told the contractor to get a calibrated torque screwdriver or torque wrench and to make up all of his terminations again using the torque tools. Does the inspector have a leg to stand on? 8. EMT was added to the list of acceptable wiring methods to provide protection from physical damage for conductors installed underground. Section allows EMT to be installed underground if protected by corrosion protection and approved as suitable for the condition. Does such a product exist? Who approves the EMT as suitable for the conditions? Does a listed tape wrap exist that provides protection from corrosion? Other products? 9. A contractor installs a length of 3 EMT to supply a 50 kva transformer. Approximately four feet before the transformer, he transitions to Flexible Metal Conduit (FMC) that terminates with a connector on the side of the transformer. He installs the feeder conductors and a wire- type equipment grounding conductor within this raceway system. The inspector red tags the job and tells the electrician to provide an equipment bonding jumper (EBJ) between the EMT connector and either the FMC connector or the transformer enclosure. Does the NEC require this EBJ? 10. Is it required to provide a permanent switching means to allow the connection of a portable or temporary source of power, which shall be available for the duration of a repair, to a single alternate power source used as an emergency system? *Ja- moke Urban Dictionary: A local dimwit or shiftless lay- about, primarily from the urban Boston Area.
