3 Thank you for your purchase of the BWS 1000 Waste Compactor/Baler. With just a little preventative maintenance and by keeping your unit clean, we are sure it will provide many years of trouble-free operation. Method of Operation **Please read this manual carefully before installing or servicing the equipment** The BWS 1000 can save thousand of dollars over its life by reducing trash hauling expense, cardboard recycling costs and labor by reducing the volume of solid waste and cardboard by as much as 95%. The BWS1000 contains of a powerful hydraulic pump along with a 2 ½ (64 mm) ram that generates more than 10,780 lbs of compaction force. When configured as a compactor, the BWS 1000 utilizes a high capacity packing cube and durable, puncture resistant bag. The large loading door easily accommodates even the largest bag of bulky trash. With the loading door closed, a single switch engages the compaction cycle. Removing the trash cart converts the BWS 1000 into a high capacity cardboard baler. 3

4 BWS 1000 Built-In Safety Features A. Automatic Switch (green switch) The unit will NOT operate if the Loading Door is open and the green switch is turned. The Loading Door MUST be closed for the unit to compact. The unit will NOT operate if the Main Door is open and the green switch is turned. Main door must be closed for unit to operate. The switch keeps compactor from operating when Door or Doors are open. B. Manual Switch By manually turning the Up and Down switch, unit will not operate if you release switch. The Up and Down switch is spring loaded so it ONLY works when your hand is on the switch. Compaction will work with Doors open or closed. 5 1. Set -up BWS 1000 Inspecting the Unit Remove the packing materials from the unit. Inspect for any damage that may have been missed when the unit was delivered, and report it IMMEDIATELY to the delivering carrier. 1.1 Selecting the Location The correct location of the BWS 1000 will make it more useful and easier to operate and service. Make sure that there is a 110 volt, 20 amp dedicated circuit available. Make sure there is at least 58 1/2 inches (approx. 5 feet) from the back of the unit to the end of the door, with main door open to 90, so the cardboard baler and waste cube can be removed. * Allow 5 feet so the door can open The BWS 1000 weighs more than 800 pounds when empty, and is top heavy. Take care to prevent the unit from tipping and potentially injuring you and others. 5

6 Each BWS 1000 should come with the following: 1 Operation and Maintenance Manual 1 Box of 50 specially designed compactor bags 2 Spools of baler twine 2 Wheel stops 1 Waste cart (not located inside of the supply cabinet) Waste Cart Roll of compactor bags Two spools of baler twine (behind the 2 silver guide rods) Two circular wheel stops (placed behind the fuel pump) Once the unit is in place, open the top supply cabinet, and take out the two rubber wheel stops. Place one wheel stop under the left front caster wheel to keep the unit in place. (The stop is a donut shaped piece of rubber that can open up. Open the donut and slide it around the left front caster). Repeat the same with the front right side. Caster wheel (located underneath the unit) Rubber wheel stop (in place) 6

7 1.2 Powering up the Unit The electrical cord is located on the back of the unit. Pull the head of the cord out and extend the cord to its full length. And plug the chord into the socket. Note: The standard BWS 1000 is wired to operate on 115 volts, single phase electrical power. It can be wired for 230 volt single phase on special order. Functions of the two (2) switches: The green switch to the right is the Automatic Switch. When the Automatic Switch is turned to the right, the compaction plate will compress and then return to the starting position. If the door is opened while the plate is in the compaction mode, it will stop compacting. If the door is closed after the cycle is interrupted, the plate will return to the upright position without finishing the compaction. This is the switch that should be used to compact garbage as the unit is being filled. The Manual Up & Down switch on the left is spring loaded and operates the compaction plate in the up and down motion for the baling option. To use the Up & Down switch, turn the green switch to the left (this will set the unit to the Manual mode). Please keep in mind that the unit will not operate if you release switch. The Up and Down switch is spring loaded so it ONLY works when your hand is on the switch. Compaction will work with Doors open or closed. 7

8 1.3 Installing the Compactor Bag Open the main door by turning knob counterclockwise. Inside you will see a cart. The cart has two parts: the portable waste transport tray on wheels and a removable gray sleeve. Waste transport tray on wheels Removable gray sleeve Make sure the word FRONT is facing the handle. This permits the cart to be lifted into the unit. 1. Pull transport tray out from the unit using the attached handle. 2. Remove a single bag from the roll and place it in the cube (put the black elastic around the sleeve). 3. Fold the excess over the outside edge of the cube and then fold it back up to form a cuff. This will help prevent liquids from flowing over the bag during the compaction cycle 4. Lift the tray back into the BWS 1000, and push the cart completely into the unit. 5. Collapse the handle and position under the lip of the cart. Close the door and turn handle clockwise to lock. 9 2. Operating the Unit 2.1 Loading the Unit Pull the loading door open with the silver handle and deposit trash bag into the unit. Close the loading door and then hit the automatic switch so that the compactor smashes the trash. Repeat until the unit is full. When the BWS 1000 has reached maximum capacity, meaning it cannot accept anymore waste, a buzzer will sound. After the buzzer sounds, you need to empty the unit. 2.2 Emptying the Unit 1. To empty the BWS 1000, open the main door. 2. Using the expandable handle on the transport tray, pull it out of the unit. 3. Pull the sides of the bag up and secure with a twist tie (not provided) or by tying a knot in the bag. 4. If the bag is too heavy, use the waste cart to transport the bagged waste to the dumpster. 5. Replace the sleeve, making sure the sleeve is positioned where it says FRONT. Note: The waste cube may weigh as much as 150 lbs. Get help or use the optional waste cart to prevent injury. (please see photos below) IMPORTANT: Inspect the top of the compaction plate daily and clear it of any trash that may be on top. (See Section 5 for details on cleaning the compaction plate.) 9

10 3. Cleaning Compaction Plate WARNING: From time to time, trash may become lodged on top of the compactor plate. This may cause the unit to malfunction unless it is removed. We recommend that you check the plate for debris whenever you empty the BWS TO CLEAN: 1. Open the main door. Remove the cart. 2. Clean the bottom of the compaction plate. Wipe the bottom of the compaction plate 3. To make it easy to clean top of compaction plate, lower compaction plate to the bottom of the unit. Unplug power cord. 4. Clean paper and debris from the top of the compaction plate. 5. Raise the compaction plate with the up switch. 6. Open the door and replace the cart. 7. Close the door and turn handle clockwise to lock. Do not over-tighten. Handle could come loose.- 8. Plug unit back into outlet. 10

11 4. Use as a Cardboard Baler 4.1 Preparing the Unit for Baling 1. Open the main door and remove the trash cart and put it aside. (The cart does not need to be emptied.) 2. Make sure the twine is visible in the compaction chamber, and that the bale ejector strap is secured to the back of the chamber. 3. Check that the twine is in the retaining clips on floor of the unit and wrapped around stud washers in front of the unit. 4. Close the main door. Compaction Plate Twine Retaining Clips Ejector Strap Stud Washers 4.2 Baling Hints The BWS 1000 can save you hours of labor. If you follow the following simple steps, it can work even better for you! Cardboard does not need to be broken down, but we recommend that the first large piece be laid flat to make tying the bale easier and to hold bale together. Boxes should be put in the loading door upside down to prevent the sides of the boxes from being wedged between the compaction plate and the side of the chamber. Make sure that the cardboard is completely in the machine before closing the loading door. This makes sure that the cardboard is not wedged between the compaction plate and the sides of the chamber. This also prevents excess pressure against the main door, which makes opening it difficult. Please be advised, that we recommend closing the main door when making the bale. This photo shows the door open to show the proper placement of the cardboard into the machine. 11

12 4.3 Making the Bale 1. Load cardboard using the loading door until the compaction chamber is full. 2. Close the loading door and press the automatic switch on the Supply Cabinet Door. 3. When the compaction cycle completes, open the Loading Door and reload. 4. Repeat steps The BWS 1000 has a built-in pressure sensor that indicates when the unit is full. When the unit senses that it is full (as indicated by a buzzer), the compaction plate will stop in a down position. a) Open the loading door. Check to see if there is cardboard wedged between the chamber sides and the compaction plate. b) With the loading door open, turn the manual up-down switch on the compactor to the left (counter -clockwise) to run the compaction plate to the up position. c) Reposition any cardboard that may have been wedged between the compaction plate and the sides of the chamber. d) Close the door and turn the automatic button again. If the buzzer sounds again, The unit is full and the bale should be removed. If the buzzer does not sound, continue to load the BWS 1000, unless you want a smaller bale. 6. Once the BWS 1000 is full, a buzzer will sound and compaction plate will be in the down position. Open the loading door and, as described in b above, and move the plate to the upright position. 7. Open the main door and pull out enough twine to extend six inches above the top of the bale. While grasping the end of the twine, reach to the back of the compaction chamber and pull enough twine from the twine spool to reach the front of the bale. Tie a loop into the twine at the top of the bale and cut it off. Pull the end of the twine through the loop. 12

13 8. Repeat on the other strap. 9. Hold both ends of the twine and run the compaction plate down by turning the up -down switch to the right (clockwise) to fully compress the bale. PLEASE BE CAREFUL 10.Tie each twine -end tight and tie securely. 11.Release the ejection strap from the cabinet and hook it to the stud on the back of the compaction plate If you are going to use the waste cart, position it in front of the main door. A two-wheeled cart will work just fine. CAUTION: THE BALE WILL BE HEAVY! 13. Use the up -down switch to raise the compaction plate. This rolls the finished bale out of the BWS Transport bale to the recycling bin. If you need to raise the bale, we recommend using the waste cart for any heavy lifting. 13

14 5. Maintenance and Service 5.1 Preventive Maintenance Schedule The BWS 1000 requires minimal service for it to operate properly. Use the following chart to plan maintenance to guarantee long equipment life. Caution: Be sure to unplug unit when doing maintenance.
