1 LARA S LAUNDRY RENOVATION RESCUE Lara lives in Sydney with her husband and two kids. Like many busy parents, she finds herself in the laundry quite o<en. And Lara s laundry is the hub of this busy li?le home. It s less than two metres wide and just over two meters long. Like many laundries, it s a cramped space, overflowing with stuff. It has a huge top- loading washing machine, a big old concrete tub and it s also the only way to get from the house to the backyard. Lara needs a new laundry. She says she needs space for laundry baskets, washing detergents and cleaning products, plus the kid s outside items. And because everyone walks through it when they head outside, it needs to be not only funcgonal, but beaugful as well.

3 THE PLAN The old concrete wash basin is a feature that Lara and Barry both love, so it s staying and forming the basis for Barry s design a retro laundry with a touch of industrial. Whilst Lara s massive 25 year old top loader washing machine has stood the test of Gme and handles all her washing needs, it takes up a huge amount of space. So, to unlock the laundry s potengal, Lara agrees to let it go and allow Barry to install an equivalent sized top loader. This allows for the dryer to be stacked above the washer. And to prevent Lara from bending too far to load the machine, Barry installs an open shelf below the washer, raising it up and providing more storage space underneath. A new cabinet and Gmber bench top will fill the space where the old washer once resided. One wall will be clad with weatherboard effect panelling and a custom built industrial gas pipe shelving unit. The design is all about incorporagng as much storage as possible and creagng an a?racgve space for everyone to walk through on their way outside. Every bit of space, right up to the ceiling will be uglised, with a row of high cupboards running the full length of the laundry. Even the area behind the back door will become a custom built vergcal toolbox.

4 Kaboodle flatpacks from Bunnings are a cost effecgve but stylish way to build cabinetry when tackling a DIY laundry or kitchen. Even if you pay a carpenter to install the cabinets, measuring, ordering and assembling them yourself can save thousands of dollars. Barry uses various base and wall cabinets with Modern profile doors, coloured in AnGque White. The flatpacks are easy to assemble, and as Lara found out, no experience is necessary. Barry suggests using a drill on a slow sevng, ensuring that the screws are driven slowly into the pilot holes, reducing the risk of damage. DIY Tip: In wet areas it is pargcularly useful to run a bead of PVC glue along the joints to strengthen the bond and seal the end grain from moisture. It's important to make sure you're drilling down straight and not off to an angle. If you re unsure, place something upright, like the glue bo?le, beside the drill to line it up. If the drill is parallel to the bo?le, the screw will go in straight. Barry s design is complimented by a retro DIY shelf made engrely from pipe (you can use galvanised or copper) and Gmber offcuts from the bench top. The pipes Dylan used to assemble his shelf cost around fi<y dollars.

5 HOW TO BUILD A STEAM PIPE SHELF A cheap and simple to build shelf that can be as large or as small as you choose. Just select a number of gas or copper pipes, elbows and T juncgons. Set out the pipes and connectors to determine the shape you re a<er. Screw them together using thread lock glue to keep the connecgons Gght. Wipe off the excess glue. Cut Gmber shelves to size and a?ach with saddle clips.

6 Before the pipe shelves were fi?ed to the wall, Barry first glued and screwed a panel of Easycra< primed MDF interior wall lining (900x1200x9mm - $26.48 from Bunnings) and painted it Taubman s Casino Black. And to congnue the black industrial theme, Barry painted the floor Taubman s All Black, whilst the opposite wall was painted Taubmans Dusty Sky Green. The Gmber bench top and shelves are made from a cut down piece of Kaboodle 600mm Euro Oak Bench top (rrp $460 Bunnings). The paneling, plus various mason jars screwed to the bo?om of the pipe shelves, helps create the retro theme, whilst the jars also provide more storage for Lara. The gooseneck tap, a Flexispray WELS 4 Star Square Medea Gooseneck Sink Mixer (rrp $185 Bunnings) is also in keeping with the pipe shelves and also allows for buckets and items to fit easily into the concrete tub. There s plenty of room for laundry baskets below the cabinets (Barry used Clever Cube Stained Water Hyacinth Natural Inserts, rrp $16.98 Bunnings) whilst Barry makes use of every square inch of storage by hanging the drying racks above the door and the ironing board behind the door.
