1 Canvassing for Votes Your Board will be going door-to-door to get your vote for the By-Law revision. We need at least 40 addition votes from owners to complete the process. Households who have not submitted a vote in the last 8 months for this effort will receive a visit on: Saturday, February 4 th, from 1 PM Just as a reminder, the By Law amendments are required to help streamline operations especially as it relates to elections. Financial Update Our dues increase is paying off. Although we continue to experience higher than expected plumbing costs, our additional dues income has covered the expenses for the first few weeks of our fiscal year. A very good sign. We have a long way to go to repay the money borrowed from Reserves and t build back our Operations Fund, but we are definitely on the right track! Community Update The Board approved agreements to resurface and repair our decks and balconies along with repainting all the wrought iron fences in the community. Weather allowing, you should see announcements from the vendors as work gets underway. When you receive notice that the projects are to begin, please be prepared to: 1. Remove all decorations, furniture and other personal items from your balconies 2. Trim back your bushes and other plants that abut the black wrought iron fences All Cantada streets are considered fire access lanes. We have already spent more than $500 waiting to get a quorum! Unattended parking is forbidden on all Cantada streets. Even five minutes. Violations are subject to towing, fines or other sanctions. Page 1 of 4
2 Get Involved! If you want to participate, we have a number of open committee spots available for volunteers including Landscape and Architectural Committees. We are forming a new group to examine the option of replacing all our wooden fences with a more durable vinyl option. If you have an interest, let us know! We will have three openings for Board members in the upcoming election. Nomination forms will be mailed soon. We also need volunteers to be electors to assist with supervising the election and counting ballots. If any of these options interests you, contact Krista at (714) ext Tustin Police Citizen s Academy in Spanish Quiere saber más sobre las funciones del departamento de policía y las diversas funciones de los agentes de policía? 5 Trash Etiquette 1. REMOVE ANY VALUABLES 2. OPEN AND EMPTY THE BOX (most packing material is not recyclable, so toss it into the regular blue trash bin) 3. OPEN THE BOTTOM OF THE BOX 4. PUSH THE CORNERS OF THE BOX TOGETER SO IT IS FLAT That s all there is to it! Our two great trash issues throughout the community are people dumping item that are not permitted into the bins, especially the Recycle bin, and people tossing away packing boxes (cardboard) without breaking the down! A few boxes can fill the bin quickly leaving no room for your neighbors! Flattened boxes take less than 1/6 th of the space. Your 2 minutes of courtesy will insure that your neighbors have plenty of room to deposit their recyclable treasures. Many of your neighbors get deliveries from Amazon, Walmart and other mail order businesses. Few break down their boxes, and it is easy to do. Don t be a Trash Bin Hog! Page 5 of 6
6 Community Signs The Association s Rules strictly prohibit posting signs on mail boxes, trash enclosures and other Common Area structures without the prior approval of the Board of Directors. Any sign so posted in the Common Area will be removed immediately and the person responsible may be subject to a fine or other sanction. It s the Law! Slow Down to 15 MPH when driving on our property Wintertime brings unwanted risks to your safety! All California homes with attached garages are required to have Carbon Monoxide Detectors installed outside the bedroom and on each level of your home. All Cantada unit owners are required to provide these devices. The smoke alarms in your unit are not carbon monoxide detectors. If you do not have the required devices, get them now. Carbon Monoxide risk increases in winter when windows and doors are closed. CO is produced from fire places, natural gas powered appliances (hot water heaters, stoves, dryers), automotive exhaust barbeques, and other devices that burn combustibles. Newer homes are at increased risk because they are better sealed for energy efficiency. Be safe! Each year people die from asphyxiation because of unventilated rooms. Winter Safety Facts From the National Fire Protection Association, April 2016 Space heaters (electric portable, fireplaces, ovens/stoves, etc.) cause: 40% of Home Heating fires o = 56,000 in US 84% of Home Heating deaths o = 470 deaths, 1,490 Injuries 16% of all home fires Placing things than can burn too close to fire source caused most of the home heating fires & 56% of the deaths 49% of all home heating fires occurred in December through February We have a central space heating system, use it as designed. Saving money by using a portable device to heat one room is a terrific and potentially deadly risk. Keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away from heating equipment (fireplace, hot water heater, stove/oven, portable space heater) Have a 3 foot kids free zone around all heaters and open fires Never use the oven to heat the home Turn portable heaters off before going to bed Page 6 of 6
