The bridge construction is assured against corrosion through the development of an environment that keeps a maximum of 50% relative humidity (RH) around the steel construction. Dry air provides for uniform products all year round, with no risk of stoppages or spoilage. Chocolate Fat blooming and sugar blooming are two common problems when manufacturing and storing chocolate. Both kinds of blooming can occur a few hours after production, and during storage if the ambient air is too humid. The relative humidity (RH) should not exceed 60% during production and storage. Using dry air when cooling chocolate products in cooling tunnels prevents condensation from forming on products and the tunnel. The easiest way to achieve this is to regulate the humidity on the premises using a dehumidifier. An ice rink works like an enormous cooling element. When doors are opened and closed, warmer air comes in and condensation forms, mainly on the ceiling. Drops of condensation can then drip down onto the surface of the rink and cause uneven areas. Customers renting a storage tent expect their material to be protected from damage such as corrosion and rust. 10 PLASTICS INDUSTRY Greater production output Increased quality Control the relative humidity Plastics industry The plastics industry is very aware of the problems associated with airborne moisture, from the formation of condensation on moulds to the absorption of moisture by the plastic granules. Injection and blow moulding operations utilize thermoplastics which are heated to plasticity and shaped into forms via use of a mould. The majority of systems employ the use of chilled water to maintain a cold surface on the mould, resulting in a quicker forming time of the component, and thus higher production volumes. In fact, generally the colder the mould, the quicker the cycle time and greater the production outputs. Operating at low mould temperatures creates problems with condensation on the mould surface, especially during the summer period. This will result in unacceptable water marks on the product and corrosion on expensive moulds and guide pins, necessitating repair or even replacement. This problem of sweating can easily be overcome by simply increasing the mould surface temperature. This however will not be the preferred choice as it will mean increasing the cycle time of the components and decreasing output. By incorporating a dehumidifier, mould temperature of 5 C or lower can be achieved, without the risk of sweating. Greater production output Due to low mould temperatures, quicker cycle times will be achieved, and in certain cases, reduction in excess of 30% are attainable, resulting in greater production output, irrespective of external ambient conditions. Storing the raw material When storing the raw material, normally plastic granules in silos, it is important to protect these against moisture damage. Also pneumatic systems can benefit from dry air, avoiding mould and the products sticking together. 13 FREEZER STORAGE Avoid ice and frost fouling Constant temperature and reduced need of defrosting Improved hygiene and safety Refrigerated storage Ice, frost and fog build up occurs whenever warm air gets in contact with a cold environment, for example when doors are opened and closed in a refrigerated storage. The fog can affect the ability to see clearly within the storage. Ice build-up on floors or ceilings within the storage can present a hazard to staff and makes the driving of trucks dangerous. Ice and frost build-up means that regular defrosting of the store is required which costs the company time and money. Product freezing Without dehumidification of the air that is entering the building, through the conveyor feed apertures, will it convert into ice and frost formation. Which in turn will lead to the malfunction of the conveyor machinery and associated proximity, optical sensors. 14 Vanreusel Snacks in Belgium Air in Motion installed air doors at Vanreusel Snacks warehouse in Belgium, but they had the problem that floor and doors were freezing and ice forming occurred in the freezer storage. With this problem did they start looking for a reliable supplier of dehumidifiers. Problems and requests from the client Vanreusel Snacks in Belgium have a large freezer storage and order pick area, all at approximately, -21 C. The freezer area has only two doors. The pre-room area condition is around 8 C and 70% relative humidity (RH). During the night, the doors is closed but as soon as there are activities (storage, order picking, preparing shipments) approximately 14 hours per day; these doors is always open. This is what created the problems with ice forming that the client wanted a solution for. Solution The solution to Vanreusel Snacks problems was to install an air curtain with dehumidified air blown in, a AFIM- IGLO system, were the dew point was set to -34 C in the night and -20 C during the day. One door, that only got be used for calamity activities, got provided with air curtains inside the door opening. The second door got provided with a tunnel idea to be used easily. The tunnel is 3 meters, 2 meters length is inside the pre-room and 1 meter is inside the freezer room. The freezer side of the tunnel is provided with a horizontal high pressure air curtain, using freezer room air. And the pre-room side of the tunnel is provided with a vertical high pressure air curtain using pre-room air. In between these two air curtains another horizontal top air duct is installed to bring in the dry air, using duct jet system. The dehumidifier extracts air from between the two air curtains; return air inlet from approx. 0,5 meter from the floor. The dry air (2650m3/h; and -26 C dew point) is blown in vertically down; directions of jetnozzles adjusted using smoke tester. A controlled humidity climate After the installation the floor were ice and frost free, with no doors, plastic curtains or speed doors in the way. There was less moisture load and therefore less defrosting and up to 60% energy saving. The climate areas were separated which made the transport go between the two rooms without any disturbance. The dehumidifier also made the view clear, the floor dry and so no ice forming is occurring. Above all, the downtime in port for tankers that are changing cargo can minimise. A mobile or fixed dehumidifier will shorten the drying process. This is a cost-efficient way of insuring yourself against damage caused by moisture when transporting hygroscopic products such as coffee, tea, tobacco and paper. The humid outdoor air penetrates into waterworks, for example, by means of controlled ventilation or infiltration. A moisture load arises due to evaporation from walls and from free water surfaces as well. A water pipe with a surface temperature of 5ºC requires the water content of the air to be reduced to no more than 5.5 g/kg so as to ensure that no condensation is formed. Dehumidification has to take place in order to reduce the water content of the air; increasing the temperature does not affect the water content or the dew point. 19 Case study Falu Energi & Vatten Problems and requests from the client Falu Energi & Vatten is responsible for the water supply in the Falun region in Sweden. There were certain problems with condensation at a number of booster stations and pump stations which were most clearly apparent in summer, when the air is at its most humid. Condensation often occurs in buildings with cold pipes (such as water pipes); this is due to the fact that the air contains too much moisture. The moisture in the air condenses on cold surfaces. If the summer is very damp, the moisture can cause problems with electronics, flaking paint and damp floors. Damp air also provides good conditions for spiders and mosquitoes. Solution The Head of Operations at the waterworks in Falun ordered installation of DST type DR-010B dehumidifiers for four different stations that were suffering from problems with moisture. 20 WOOD STORAGE Ensure the right moisture ratio No change in shape No additional drying required The significance of air Wood which is sawn and dried is especially sensitive to moisture changes, because sawn materials are searching for equilibrium with ambient air humidity. The wood is adapting to both temperature and the moisture in the surrounding. Storing sawn timber Dried and sawn wood that is used for furniture production shouldn t have a moisture ratio in excess of 8-9%. Wood being used for doors and windows should have a moisture ratio of 12%. If this kind of timber is stored in an area without dehumidification, the quality may vary greatly. Varying moisture levels may cause the structure of the wood to change, which may cause problems with processing the wood during final production. 21 Dehumidification of wood storage Holz Schwarz, Austria Holz Schwarz in Austria, had the need to protect timber and wood materials against moisture during the storage period. They contacted KIRSCH, a DST representative, to get help with dehumidification. Problems and requests from the client The costumer s problem was that the humidity in the store followed the outdoor climate. Which made the wood s moisture content to vary significantly depending on the season. Costumer s requests were a solution that made the wood have the same quality all year around. Solution KIRSCH installed a DST Rescusorb dehumidifier to make the warehouse hold a relative humidity level of 45% which provide a stable level of moisture in the wood. KIRSCH chose to install a Rescusorb dehumidifier because the units are working with energy saving Rescusorb principle that requires no additional heating of the premises to work. 22 YEAST PRODUCTION When it comes to yeast production many factories have problem with moisture in their workshop. That is because fine yeast extract is incredible sensitive to moisture, so it has to be very dry where the yeast is produced. Which means that when the warm and humid outside ambient air gets inside the machines often have to be stopped because the air filters are getting sticky by the yeast. The humid air can also contribute to the risk of the extract forming lumps when it is cooling off. But the dry air assures production quality and allows the same production rate to be maintained all year round. 23 Example of DST dehumidified yeast factory Angel Yeast Co., Ltd China s meteoric economic rise in recent decades has reshaped many aspects of life in the Middle Kingdom, not least of which is diet. Per capita bread consumption in Mainland China has grown enormously, yet at 1.3 kg per year, it still falls far short of the 9 kg per year consumed in Taiwan where dietary habits are otherwise very similar. Accordingly, the manufacture of yeast is growing rapidly, and in concert with ever more stringent industry regulations from governments and inspection agencies, the industry is pursuing greater volumes, greater quality, with safer and cleaner manufacturing environments. In 2012 the Wuhan office of DST China was approached by China s largest yeast producer: Angel Yeast Corporation. Their anticipated output is projected at 20,000 tons annually, consisting DST RFA-172 installed at Angel Yeast corporation primarily of high-active dry yeast. Which should all roll off of a production line controlled at absolute humidity of 2 g/kg. Angel Yeast engineers were primarily concerned with maintaining constant environmental stability, with emphasis on reliability of the machinery used to maintain that environment. The client had experienced excessive stoppages due to inadequate and poor quality machinery in the past and was keen to avoid repeating it and to get a more efficient production. DST China s first contract with Angel Yeast consisted of two RFA-172 steam regenerating units, each pushing 20,000 m3/h of dry air into their new facilities. Which easily met their humidity control requirements with virtually zero maintenance needed during the first two years of operation. Based on their positive experience using DST dehumidifiers in Dehong, Angel Yeast approached DST China again in 2014 to install eight units of RFA-172 in their expanded facilities. When Angel Yeast started with their first forays into overseas markets, DST was there to support them. In 2016 eight RFA-172s units were installed in their brand new facilities in Russia and four more RFA-172 units installed in Egypt.
