Water delivered to the practice is a cocktail of unknown composition, except that it complied with the EPA Secondary Drinking Water Standard before it entered the vast water distribution pipeline beneath our streets. It s hardly surprising that further processing is required to make this water fit for use within the modern dental practice. The same applies for bottled distilled water. Take a look at the label on a bottle of distilled water and you ll see no claims as to the fitness of the water for any particular purpose. As much as bottler advertisements implore us to believe their water comes from mountain streams in Patagonia, it was most likely pumped, processed and bottled within a two county radius. While you can be fairly confident that minerals are mostly removed, pollutants with a boiling point lower than water are the first thing through the distiller. And, most bottling companies use a vacuum distillation technique that boils water at a temperature insufficient to kill bacteria that might be in the source water. The dental practice requires water with specialized characteristics in two areas the operatories and the sterilization center - but the goal is the same make sure everything that enters the patient s mouth is clean & sterile.
