Broderick, Jr., Mayor 2017 Summer Newsletter City of Anderson 120 E. 8th Street Anderson, Indiana (765) Letter from Mayor Thomas Broderick, Jr. Citizens of Anderson, It has been an exciting summer for the City of Anderson. My administration has been working tirelessly to bring progress and growth to our city in order to make Anderson a greater place to live, work and visit. The following pages of this newsletter showcase a few of the many current events that have been taking place in your community. It is my honor to serve as your mayor and I am excited to continue to bring positive change to our city. What s Coming? 2 AndersonNow Thomas J. Broderick, Jr. Mayor November 4, 2016 The Anderson Speedway Little 500 has raised over $2 million for local non-profit organizations. To kick off the Little 500 Festival this year, Mayor Broderick hosted the Annual Mayor s Cup. Mayor Thomas Broderick, Jr. and the City of Anderson held a ribbon cutting for Anderson 1 Solar Park. Many companies around the world strive to be global with a U.S. presence. Mayor Thomas Broderick and his team recently visited several Japanese and Italian companies espousing the many benefits of doing business with Anderson. Mayor Broderick commented, We are thrilled to be part of this innovative effort and through the development of this solar park, we have not only increased diversity in generation resources, but have bolstered economic development for our City, brought in additional property taxes and provided an educational opportunity for residents and visitors alike to learn more about renewable energy. This year s City of Anderson Citywide Cleanup was a success! This event allowed our citizens to dispose of many large and unwanted items. Mayor Broderick and his administration are dedicated to the beautification of our city. Mayor Broderick stated, It is very important that we keep our community clean not just on this given day, but throughout the year and to make this community attractive not only to those on the outside but for all of us that live here. 2

Broderick, Jr. Mayor November 4, 2016 Mayor Thomas Broderick, Jr. and the City of Anderson Water Pollution Control Department announced the Greensbranch Sewer Rehabilitation Project which is now completed. This project relined 100-year-old pipes and will ultimately help to prevent erosion and flooding in our city. Demolitions in The City of Anderson are underway. These blighted structures must come down and Mayor Broderick and his team are taking them down one by one. The city has compiled a list of nearly 200 blighted structures that will be demolished. Just this year, over 60 of these structures have been demolished. Kyle and Danielle Dunnichay- Noone, founders of Frederick s Friends, awarded a gift of an Expression Swing to Mayor Broderick and the Anderson Parks Department. The Expression Swing promotes intergenerational play as adults and children swing together creating memories filled with fun and laughter. The Expression Swing is located at Shadyside Park on Alexandria Pike. Mayor Broderick and the City of Anderson announced the repaving of 8 th Street from Winding Way to Rangeline Rd. ADA approved ramps have been completed on sidewalks and the paving is scheduled to be completed next month. 3

4 AndersonNow Thomas J. Broderick, Jr. Mayor November 4, 2016 Mayor Broderick and his team are resurfacing Shadyside Trails. The paving project will include some renovation to the existing trail system, including widening the trails in some areas, clearing of dead trees, repaving of associated parking areas, and reinforcing washout areas. This project is near completion. The Shadyside Lake Activity Center will be getting new grass and tables to make it a more desirable place for our citizens to host events. 4

5 Mayor Broderick and Chief David Cravens welcomed four new firefighters this summer to the Anderson Fire Department. The Anderson Police Department held several Summer Block Parties for families at our local parks. The families enjoyed bounce houses, snow cones, hot dogs and hamburgers and visits from our local police and fire departments. The City of Anderson hosted a city auction this summer to get rid of some of our old, broken equipment and knickknacks. The auction was held at the City of Anderson Central Services Building and gave people the opportunity to buy products for a discounted rate while also raising a large amount of money for our city. Mayor Broderick partnered with Jobsource, the Herald Bulletin and WorkOne to host the Annual City of Anderson Job Fair. There were over 80 vendors in attendance from across the Anderson area. Our citizens received services such as resume assistance, building computer skills, and other employmentfocused assistance. Many people received interviews that day and a few even secured jobs! Mayor Broderick and Michael Pace (descendant of Chief William Anderson) worked together this year to put on the Annual Anderson Powow. This event has been a part of Anderson s rich history for many years and the tradition continues! 5

7 The St. Vincent DePaul Walk for the Poor was held at the Highland Middle School football field to help raise money for the less fortunate in Anderson. City employees held a community day for local Anderson pre-school and kindergarten students. Mayor Broderick and Anderson Parks and Recreation will host a Fall Break Camp for students K through 6 th grade. The camp will include field trips, learning and recreational opportunities and much more! The City of Anderson hosted a discussion in the Anderson Public Library regarding Healthy Places for Healthy People to start the conversation about what our city can do to be a healthy place to live. The Mayor s Charity Ball raised over $35,000 for our local educators to use on specialized classroom projects. 7
