1 Florascape From the Executive Council s Grapevine: ANCASTER HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER JULY, AUGUST, SEPT Well that was quite a spring! Have you dried out yet? The good thing about that drenching is that our gardens will be lush and green for some time. And that s a good thing because we re busy with so many other activities! The Fieldcote and Municipal Gardeners had a busy and successful spring clean-up and planting and now their crews of volunteers are ready to maintain them throughout the summer. They are bound to receive compliments on the gorgeous red and white themed plantings. Well done! They could always use a hand if you have some time to help out. (Fieldcote gardens every Thurs. morning and Municipal gardens have a weekly schedule. Contact to volunteer.) Another successful Plant Sale is now behind us and what a success it was! (see. p. 2) A huge thank you to all the volunteers who potted up plants and worked at the sale on a chilly Saturday morning on May long weekend. Preparations are also underway for our summer events. The Trillium Award nominations are now complete and the judging runs July 8-23 with the awards ceremony on August 15 at Fieldcote. (see p. 4) The Flower and Photo Show and Afternoon Tea has been moved up to July 22 this year to help avoid searching for entries in parched gardens like last year. We have eliminated the Vegetable Division to help streamline the entire show. Our May & June speakers were chosen to help inspire members with their entries in the Design and Photo Divisions. Again, volunteers are always welcome. (See insert/p.5 for show schedule and p. 3 for details on how to enter and help out.) Remember that our September and October meetings and the November AGM will be held at our temporary location in the lower level of the Library (Murray Ferguson Room) while renovations take place at the Old Town Hall. There is always lots to see, learn and participate in from your Society. ~Lorraine Held, for the Executive Council Is your garden a haven for wildlife? The Canadian Wildlife Federation recognizes Canadians who garden with wildlife in mind. You can apply to have your garden certified or simply find a list of plants that support wildlife with their Native Plant Encyclopedia. 2 Plant & Bake Sale Another One of the Best Ever! by Sue Freshwater, Donna Parker Co-Directors Plant Sale It was a challenging spring for the volunteers prepping for May 20th Plant Sale, our major fundraiser. The cool temperatures with very few sunny days, and one day with five inches of rain, and more rainy days throughout the ten potting days, certainly interferred with our ability to get into our gardens and get digging. Nevertheless, the plants looked great on sale day. Now, the sale day was another story! Comfortable temperatures required a jacket but the frequent gusts of wind toppled many of our trees and signs and made the weather a challenge. Our picture boards flew across the parking lot! We were worried that with all of the issues it would not be a stellar year. It was a pleasant surprise, after the sale, to discover that we had a record year with a profit of $7019! In addition to supporting our community gardening activities and educational speaker program the profits will help us to initiate a bursury for a student attending a local post-secondary institution for the study of horticulture or agriculture. (More details in the fall newsletter). We have a great group of volunteers who work together quite cohesively. Thank you to all our volunteers, plant donors, community businesses and, especially, our customers that supported our 5 hour sale. We couldn t do it without you! To maintain success in the future, we are appealing to all members, with gardens, to plan to donate plants next year. We re creating a list of donors for You ll be contacted in the spring as a reminder to either bring the plants to the farm or arrange for members to come to dig the plants for you. Contact either: suemfreshwater@gmail.com donnaparker@cogeco.ca Special thanks, this year, go the following organizations for their contributions to the sale: Property Management Inc. Whiteside Farms Harper s Garden Centre City of Hamilton Tree & Twig Farms Mike Clare & family (formerly peonygarden) Photos by D. Puskas 2
3 ANNUAL FLOWER & PHOTO SHOW SATURDAY July22, 2:00-4:30 PM Old Town Hall, Wilson St. Ancaster Mark your calendar, Sat. July 22, for this year s Flower and Photo Show and Afternoon Tea. The theme is, of course, CANADA 150 YEARS. We have streamlined the 2017 show by eliminating the Vegetable Division and therefore some of the awards and certificates. The Floral, Design and Photo Divisions will remain almost unchanged. So show our members and guests your talents in the Design Division by making an arrangement against a mirror backdrop, or in a Tim Horton s cup or with maple leaves and a Canadian flag. We have made it easier for you to bring entries from your garden by holding our show a month earlier. We hope that drought will not be a factor! (Program details can be found in the show schedule included in this newsletter.) You can bring a photo of a sea-side view, a shot of a native wild flower or a shot illustrating our heritage. Please remember that photos must be 5 X 7 and matted to 6 X 8 and, of course, you must have taken the photo yourself. All divisions will be judged by registered judges from the OHA and the photography business. All members are eligible to enter and to win cash prizes, ribbons and trophies; and anyone can win one of the many door prizes donated by generous Ancaster businesses. The viewing of entries and the afternoon tea will begin at 2:00 pm and the presentation of awards at 3:00 pm. You can also participate by volunteering the night before to help set up the show, on the day of the show by preparing and serving refreshments, assisting judges, helping with the takedown or any of several jobs during the day. If you would like to help celebrate Canada s 150 with us please call: Lorraine Held Betty Howitt Rosemary Anstey (afternoon tea) or Wendy Spangenberger (afternoon tea) 3
