2 United THE LOREM Plant IPSUMS Savers Member SprigSs 1) Species At-Risk and the At-Risk Assessment Tool United Plant Savers' At-Risk and To-Watch lists were first officially published in the book Planting the Future in 2000 (available for purchase at our online store). You can view our current At-Risk and To-Watch Lists on our website: These lists were compiled based on concerns from leaders in the herbal industry including herbalists, ecologists, growers, and buyers who were very familiar with wild-harvesting, supply and demand, and habitat concerns for certain native medicinal species. It then became apparent, due to continued and rapid growth of the herbal industry, that our organization needed a transparent methodolgy that could easily be used and shared, to assist in quantifying conservation concerns. This adaptable, transparent tool can be used to quantify and compare vulnerability to overharvest for wild-collected medicinal plants. Subsequently, we are re-creating the list of the most threatened medicinal plants in temperate North America by scoring species according to their life history, the effects of harvest, their abundance and range, habitat, and demand. The resulting rankings, based on explicit criteria rather than expert opinion, will make it easier to discuss areas of vulnerability and set conservation priorities. At-Risk List First published in Planting the Future, This list is currently being revised based on the At-Risk Assessment Tool. 7 2 1 THE LOREM IPSUMSMember United Plant Savers United Plant Savers Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary Rutland, Ohio In 1998, one of the founding fathers of United Plant Savers, Paul Strauss, donated 70 acres of his land to the organization helping to form the first UpS Botanical Sanctuary. Shortly thereafter, Michael & Judy Funk of Mountain People, a natural products distributor, made a considerable donation that enabled UpS to buy 300 adjoining acres, completing the first United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary. is dedicated to promoting research into population dynamics, seed germination and cultivation studies, and habitat preferences (i.e. soil types, light and water requirements, disease challenges). As a member of United Plant Savers we invite you to plan a visit to our Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary. There is a variety of onsite accommodation available, from primitive camping to temperature-controlled full bath and kitchen facilities. We are only 25 minutes from Athens, Ohio, whose locavore mentality and Athens Farmers Market have warranted national recognition. This 370-acre property is 50% mature diverse native hardwood forest and 50% fields. Extensive botanical assays have been performed to determine the resources present on the land. To date over 500 species of herbaceous plants, over 120 species of trees and over 200 species of fungi have been identified. Half of United Plant Savers "At Risk" native medicinal plants are thriving in abundance on this land. Large communities of Goldenseal, American Ginseng, Black and Blue cohosh, and medicinal tree species such as white oak and slippery elm flourish in prosperity. The United Plant Savers Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary is a living model for protecting diversity, and ensuring that the rich traditions of the North American and Euro-American folk medicine continue to thrive. Interested in hosting a retreat, class or educational event at the Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary? Both in-door and outdoor educational space, is available for rent to our members and member organizations. Whether you are a researcher, landowner, gardener, farmer, teacher, birder, or a wildlife enthusiast, there is majesty in this forest for all who come to visit. The Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary is open by appointment only. Over the years the Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary has also become an educational center and alongside our Medicinal Plant Conservation Certificate Program, provides diverse learning opportunities for children, university students, herbal products industry members, and scientists. United Plant Savers For more information about the Sanctuary or to schedule a visit, please call our main office: (740) or visit the Goldenseal Botanical Sanctuary online at: facebook.com/goldensealsanctuary 7
8 THE LOREM IPSUMS United Plant Savers Member Help United Plant Savers, bring awareness and action to saving a valuable and culturally significant native medicinal plant! United Plant Savers has been concerned about the sustainability of the American Ginseng industry since we first published our At-Risk list in In our 2012 Journal of Medicinal Plant Conservation, we published an article on the dramatic decline of American Ginseng (Panax quinqifolius) populations in our National Forests and National Parks due to poaching (illegal harvesting) and over-harvesting. American Ginseng is an amazing American medicinal plant of great value to rural communities, as a sustainable nontimber resource for both landowners and the National Forest Service, and if managed and protected, ginseng can be a sustainable source of wild medicine for future generations. Dig Roots? American Ginseng needs your help United Plant Savers supports the efforts for National Forests to co-manage for non-timber forest products, such as medicinal plants. Achieving this goal requires seed banks of regional ginseng populations to ensure genetic integrity and supply of local seeds. This effort would support farmers to plant wild-simulated ginseng to meet market demands. We are asking you to sign the online petition in order to demonstrate that the public would like to see Congress dedicate more financial support for American Ginseng conservation, and that plants are just as worthy of protection and just as vulnerable to wildlife trafficking. Bring awareness and action to saving a valuable and culturally significant native medicinal plant! Sign our online petition: search: Save American Ginseng
