1 All who attended the soirée on January 16th appeared to have a great time and it looks like we made some serious money while having fun. Thanks so much to Barbara Doliner for all her efforts! The food and entertainment were great and LPGA was very accommodating. I will report on our meeting with Alexandra Middleton from the News-Journal at our February meeting. I look forward to seeing all of you then. Elaine Tindell, Council President Gold Book Endowment Fund The Garden Center was given to the council in 1972 through the estate of Mr. Finney's wife, Cora Finney. The house is a wonderful example of 1920's Florida architecture. The council established the Endowment Fund as a safeguard. A bequest is a gift that keeps on giving. The Garden Center is a perfect example. The Garden Center is a visible sign to the community of garden club efforts to preserve and protect our beautiful area. Anyone can make a gift to the Endowment Fund. Please keep the Endowment Fund in mind when making your yearly charitable donations. Consult your family, attorney, or tax preparer about including the Endowment Fund as a beneficiary of your estate. Gifts are recorded each year in the Gold Book Record under three sections: Honorary - Donations to honor club presidents, outstanding garden club members and other friends of garden clubs. Each recipient receives a certificate. Memorials - Donations given in honor of deceased club members and garden club supporters. Family members receive a certificate, and under Special Gifts - All major gifts, bequests and annual gifts from the Council of Garden Clubs member clubs are recorded in this category. Donations begin at $10. All donations are tax deductible. Certificates are awarded at the Council of Garden Clubs annual luncheon May 13, There are four categories Gold Book Awards: Clubs/Council Presidents; Garden Club Members or Friends; Memorials; and Significant Gifts. When making a donation, please use the Gold Book Endowment Fund Donation Form found on the Council of Garden Clubs website and list: the name and address of the honoree; garden club association, if applicable; name and address of donor; name and address of family member to notify if donation is a memorial. 2 CHERRY LAUREL GARDEN CLUB President Kathleen Pruett At the January meeting, Linda Evans with the Volusia County Agricultural Extension presented a program on container gardens. Members learned the gardening concept "Thrill, fill, and spill for arranging a container garden. The idea is to group together various plants with similar growing needs using three key components of design to create a fabulous container garden that will be sure to turn heads. Members were given "starter" herbs to encourage their creation of a container garden. In February the club is planning a field trip to Sun Splash Nurseries in New Smyrna Beach for a program on honey bees. MAGNOLIA GARDEN CLUB President Linda Heikkila Our January Meeting was held on the 11 th. On the agenda was a proposal to donate the Valentine Toiletry Goodie Bags to a Women's Shelter. Each member is asked to donate at least 5 bags. We will collect all the bags at our next meeting and deliver them to the shelter. Taking the great recommendation from Kathleen Pruett, we invited Karen Saley to present her demonstration on Cooking with Herbs. Our group enjoyed her tasty food samples. She inspired all of us to try these recipes at home. Our Garden Clean-up day was on the 14 th. Five of us met at the house to work in the garden With the help of a neighbor who was getting gutters installed, we were able to dispose of the old gutters left in the back yard. We emptied the flower pots that were in the garden and discovered a beautiful fountain built into the wall. What a wonderful surprise! SOUTH PENINSULA GARDEN CLUB President Stephanie Susetka A workshop on orchids was conducted by John Isaac in January. He was very knowledgeable and helpful with many of our orchid problems! He also had some beautiful orchids for sale at extremely reasonable prices. He grows and consigns them at Whisperwood Farms in Ormond Beach. Pat Crowley will speak on African Violets at our February meeting. The program will be February 12 th around 11 am at the Finney Memorial Garden Center. TILLANDSIA GARDEN CLUB President Carolyn Bacci 2016 has not started out to be a very good year for Tillandsia. Over the holidays we lost two active members. Betsy McQuoid who had been a member since 1992, and Margie Headley, a more recent member, who was responsible for countless creative projects for our club, including the activities for a senior housing visits. Both of these ladies will be missed. Our club members continue to work on the details for our upcoming "Day of Play" fundraiser, January 25th at the Palmetto Club. Our Publicity Chairman, Barbara Doliner, has sent an article to the Ormond Beach Observer about our ongoing Community Service Project. Our Civic Committee members tend to the garden around a rock that bears our club name. The rock and garden are situated in front of our tree that we planted in Ames Park in January 1979 for Arbor Day. The two photos show some members planting the tree back in the 70's and the other, shows today's members Vicki Schammel and Dianne Stevens tending the garden in front of the tree. LIBRARY COMMITTEE Committee Chairman Mary Jo Harrington Library Books Clean-Out Instructions - When your club meets at the garden center, please have your members look at the library books and place either a pink or green sticker on the spine of any book you feel we should keep. Many are too old and out of date to be of use and the council wants to eliminate them. Club presidents: please encourage your members to take a few minutes and help.
