1 Member of National Garden Clubs, Inc., South Central Region, Texas Garden Clubs, Inc., District II, and Garden Club Council of Ft. Worth 2011, 2014, 2015 THROUGH THE GRAPEVINE February 2019 Favorite Plants for North Texas Monarch You've heard about migrating Monarchs and that Texas is a crucial link in their annual success, but what do they really need from us? Come learn as Carol Clark, Conservation Specialist with Monarch Watch and longtime member of the Native Plant Society of Texas, shares how Monarchs choose specific plants for their caterpillars to dine on, and which plants they choose most often in North Texas. Adult Monarchs need nectar from flowers, so we'll also have an in depth look at the best Monarch nectar plants for North Texas gardens. There will be a free plant list available. 2 President s Message Although it is unpleasantly cold outside, signs of Spring are everywhere in our area. During these next few weeks of Winter, as we prepare our gardens for this year s new growth, we also have many garden club activities to keep us busy. We have two Conventions coming up in the next few months. The District II Spring Convention is March 13 th in Colleyville at the Colleyville Center. The Texas Garden Club s 91 st Spring Convention will be held in El Paso on April 1st-4th. Please refer to the registration forms found in this newsletter for more information about these two conventions. Our thanks to Karen Rice for her work in coordinating the Night Flight Owls Nocturnal Habits presentation by the Blackland Prairie Raptor Center. Over 100 people enjoyed this event at the Grapevine Library on January 26 th. And a special thank you to Karen for her presentation on the Monarch migration to Mexico at the January 22nd GGC general meeting. If you missed the program, the video is now posted on our website. At our February meeting, you ll see several sign-up tables for volunteering and participating in upcoming local trips, Flowercade and the Spring luncheon. Hope to see you this Tuesday, the 12 th, at West Texas Street. Candace Kyler Please print out copies of the Plant Sale flyer on page 10 and pass along to your family, friends and neighbors. 4 Debbie Boyle Receives Grapevine Parks and Rec Helping Hand Award Grapevine Garden Club Member Debbie Boyle was recognized as the very talented and extremely dependable lead of the new GO Wild Propagation Team at a recent volunteer appreciation brunch. The Propagation Team works at the greenhouse in the Botanical Gardens and grows native Texas plants for habitat restoration efforts at Grapevine Parks and school outdoor learning centers. Debbie began volunteering with the Propagation Team in early 2018 and quickly stepped up to lead the group. The volunteer group is made up of Grapevine Garden Club members and Tarrant County Master Gardeners. Debbie coordinates with Betsy Marsh, Environmental Education Coordinator, communicates with the volunteers, collects data and checks plants weekly or more often to make sure they are growing and thriving. There were some hiccups encountered in the beginning and she made sure that everyone learned from these challenges and developed new plans and procedures to improve the propagation work and strengthen the team. And the team has been busy! In 2018 they propagated 3,000 native Texas plants! Many hundreds have already been planted at habitat restoration sites at Grapevine Middle School and Meadowmere Park and the rest will be planted this year at sites throughout Grapevine. On Thursday, April 25th and Friday, April 26th, volunteers from our garden club will go to third grade classrooms in four elementary schools. We will discuss the importance of trees, the differences among trees, what a tree needs to grow, and the proper way to plant one. The book The Very Busy Tree will be read to the class and then left in the class library. After demonstrating how to plant a tree, redbud saplings will be left with the classroom teacher to distribute to each child to take home at the end of the day. Presenters may have a partner, if desired, and will be given lesson plans. To prepare for this event, we will be meeting at the greenhouse in the Grapevine Botanical Gardens on Wednesday, April 24th at 1:00 p.m. to have a bagging party. We will bag each sapling, attach planting and information sheets, and box them up for each classroom. Please sign up to be a presenter and/or a bagger. Sign-up sheets will be at the February general meeting. Miriam Ward & Evelyn Urbanosky February

9 Plant Sale To all our members who have already dug plants in their yards, have turned in their vintage pots, and have collected and donated gently used garden books, we love you! Our digging committee has started their busy schedule and has been pleased to report some popular pass along plants that will be offered for sale on April 13th. If you are overwhelmed by the amount of plants that you would like to donate, and cannot tackle digging on your own, please give Elizabeth Jewett a call to get on their schedule. Many thanks to our coordinators, Elizabeth Jewett and Greg Braak. If you are digging your own plants, please remember to use gallon size plastic pots (except for herbs and small succulents). Please remember to line the bottoms of the pots with newspaper, and don t forget to add the plant name and color on the label since many will not be blooming at the time of the sale. Please remember to let Paula know which plants you are digging. We will ask you for a plant update in March to record how many plants have actually made it. Catriona and her team have been busy collecting and pricing pots and books already donated. The last day to turn in those items will be at our February meeting. We are in dire need of pot display tables for the sale and if you have any racks or wooden ladders that can be used that day, please take a picture and to Catriona! BYOS Bring your own Spade day has been scheduled at 10 a.m. at the Grapevine Greenhouse on Thursday, February 21st. Our purchasing team has been busy scouting the wholesale nurseries for plant specimens and on that day, we will be up-potting purchased nursery stock, planting hanging baskets and designing specialty pots. We hope to recruit about 20 members for this activity. If you are free that day, we would love to have you join us! Please sign up on our website. Plan to lunch with us afterward, location TBD. Plant Sale Yard Signs- If you are willing to display a sign in your front yard, please let Suzie Agnew know. If you would like to purchase a yard sign to keep and display every year, they can be purchased for $10, fee to be collected at the February Meeting. Cecilia and Annemarie February
