The Guadalupe Gardener June 2010 A monthly publication of the Guadalupe County Master Gardeners in cooperation with the Texas AgriLIFE Extension, Guadalupe County Notes from the Garden - of Linda Bruno, President Hard to believe that we are halfway through the year. I know that as I get older the time goes faster. Or maybe it s just there is so much to do and not enough time for everything. I never get all the seeds I want started or the cuttings I want to do done. And now it s time to start planning for a fall garden. So, a quick look at some of the events and opportunities coming up for the second half of the year. The Guadalupe County Fair is in October and we are looking for someone to coordinate the Master Gardener activities. Since there is never a shortage of volunteers who are ready to jump in and help, it just takes a little time to organize the schedules, be there for the field crop entries and the judging and make sure the set up and tear down of our area is properly done. I had fun the two years I did it and helped Joe with it last year. We always have a great time and get to talk to a lot of interesting people. If you are interested, please let me know. Clara Mae Marcotte will be asking for volunteers to work with the children in the Garden at the Big Red Barn, also in October. A lot of you have done this in the past and we hope you will be back this year to do it again. And don t forget the Central Texas Master Gardener Conference that will be in Schertz on October 9 th. If you are interested in working with the Junior Master Gardener program, Bexar County is conducting a training class from July 26 through July 30 at the San Antonio Botanical Garden. It s a great opportunity if you ve been thinking about doing something with your school or youth groups. Dale Odvody will be sending out more information along with the application by . November is election month and we are looking for people who want to run for board positions. 2 Association News MAY MEETING PROGRAM - INVASIVE PLANTS Cheryl Hamilton, Alamo Area Master Naturalist, along with her husband, Alan Montemayor, and two fellow members, Lonnie and Judith Shockley, presented a program about invasive plants at the May membership meeting. She spoke of how certain landscape plants such as ligustrum, nandina, and Chinese tallow tree have multiplied and caused major problems in many parks and natural areas. Invasive plants are non-native, exotic, and alien type plants which tend to rapidly multiply and invade areas at the expense of native plants. They may occur as trees, shrubs, vines, grasses, ferns and forbs. They may have been introduced accidentally but most were brought in as ornamental plants or for livestock forage. Cheryl identified ligustrum as a tree like plant reaching feet in height and forming a dense coverage. There are several types of ligustrum including Japanese, glossy, Chinese and European privet. They form berries which are consumed and spread by birds. The Alamo Area Master Naturalists have spent countless hours trying to eradicate nandina, also called heavenly bamboo. Lonnie and Judith Shockley spoke of how they use GPS to map out where the nandina is located. They then return and cut the nandina down and apply a herbicide specifically on the remaining stumps. The Chinese tallow tree has become a threat to the coastal prairie forming tallow forests which reduce prairie habitat. Much needed nesting and shelter habitat is reduced for several species of birds. An example of a plant introduced to fulfill a purpose is salt cedar. Salt cedar was introduced in West Texas as an effective wind break and bank stabilizer; however, it has gotten out of hand choking up streams with a dense growth that the sun cannot penetrate. Salt cedar is also a water hog reducing the volume of water flowing down stream. Cheryl spoke of top thirteen San Antonio invaders. These include: Tree of heaven, Giant reed, King Ranch bluestem, Japanese privet, Glossy privet, Japanese honeysuckle, Catclaw vine, Chinaberry tree, Nandina, Buffelgrass, Golden bamboo, Johnson grass and Chinese tallow tree. Three up and coming invasive plants include: Malta thistle, Yellow star thistle and Tahitian bridal veil. Aquatic invaders included hydrilla, giant salvinia, giant reed, elephant ear, water hyacinth, and salt cedar. Hydrilla and water hyacinth are banned in Texas due to the havoc they have reeked in lakes, rivers and ponds. Billions of dollars have been spent trying to remove aquatic invaders. Scientists estimate trying to control invasive plants costs the U. S. economy around 35 billion dollars annually. They estimate that over eleven million acres of land have been overrun with invasive plants. Cheryl provided a field guide for identification and control of invasive plants published in 2003 by the Forest Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. The author is James H. Miller and the title is "Nonnative Invasive Plants of Southern Forests". This field guide provides information on accurate identification and effective control of 33 plants or groups that are invading the forests of the 13 southern states, including Texas, at an alarming rate. Native plants are the optimum choice for wildlife habitat restoration and should always be considered in place of using invasive plants. Birds will eat berries from nandina, Chinese tallow tree, chinaberry tree, and other invasive plants, but native species can be selected which better meet their nutritional needs. 4 Ag Fest at the Big Red Barn The Big Red Barn outside Seguin hosted this year s Ag Festival which featured all aspects of farm and ranch life, but emphasized FOOD and FUN! Guadalupe County Master Gardeners were represented on May 6 th with a booth manned by our President, Linda Bruno and Bob Teweles. A display on Rainwater Harvesting and numerous handouts provided information on gardening and the Master Gardener Program. Many participants took advantage of the free flower, vegetable and tree seeds which were generously packaged by our Master Gardeners. The younger Ag enthusiasts were treated to a scavenger hunt among the booths. At the Master Gardener booth the youngsters were asked to identify five vegetables yellow squash, green pepper, onion, tomato and cucumber. Pickle anyone? Perhaps most importantly, six visitors expressed a keen interest in our upcoming Master Gardener class! May meeting refreshments were provided by Peggy Jones. Sandy Foss, Doug Biggs, Jane Kronke and Betty Hughes. Eddie Johnston won the $14 raffle. George Ammermann won the $10 Greengate Nursery gift certificate. Polly Ruppert and Dale Odvody each won a pair of tickets to the Festival of Flowers donated by Marilyn Anderson. 5 CLASS 22 - CLASS 22 - CLASS 22 Now is the time to sign up students for the Fall Master Gardener Class! Remember Students become Interns who become Master Gardeners. Romelia Escamilla and Jose Contreras signed up for the course at the May meeting, but these are the only two paid-up students as of this writing. We have a list of twenty-five people who have expressed an interest in becoming Master Gardeners over the past four months and perhaps fifteen of these prospects are still interested. Experience shows that people don t sign up for a course four months in advance, but the application deadline is July 30 th.. Perhaps more importantly, the 10% discount on registrations expires at our July meeting on July 15 th! Bottom Line - The Guadalupe County Master Gardeners need your help NOW to find more students for the Fall class starting August 11 th. The class will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. in Seguin at the AgriLife Extension building. Full details on the class, class registration and the class schedule can easily be found on our website at the link Next Class. Anyone interested in the class can call Bob Teweles at ( rteweles@satx.rr.com) or the AgriLife Extension office at Update on the Schertz Community Garden We have a cucumber. And two different kinds of yellow squash. And green tomatoes (which just means they aren t ripe yet). Still have Bermuda grass but there is a nice big clear patch thanks to Ann Odvody staying on top of the spraying. More pathways mulched. Beds up that need soil and plants. A small herb garden in. And a butterfly bush that is holding up nicely. There are plants along the back fence that are starting to be visible. The Gulf Fritillary are munching on the passion vine. We ve had a donation of flagstone that was dropped off. And an offer of bricks that need to be picked up. And there is still a lot of work to be done. If you have something we can use that you don t need anymore, let us know and we ll get it from you. Rakes, hoes, shovels and a wheelbarrow it s tough hauling everything with you every time you work so we are really looking for extra tools that we can mark GCMG and leave at the Garden. Contact me if you can help. Linda Bruno jlbruno@gvec.net or (NOTES - continued from page 1) thinking about it, we d love to have you attend a board meeting or talk to any of the officers about what they do. We welcome anyone who is interested. Last, the summer social is in June this year and Peggy Jones and her team are working hard to come up with fun and exciting things for us to do. I m still wondering just how you play Garden Bingo! Please try to be there, even if you can t normally make our regular meetings. We d love to see you. Watch for more details in your and in this newsletter. As always, if you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know. jlbruno@gvec.net or

Springs Hill Garden Thank you everyone for all the work on the Springs Hill Demonstration Garden. Planting, irrigation and mulch all done! Thanks to the oh so organized Nancy Masterson it was easy to get the work done. On May 8th, Mulch Day, with 9 volunteers working - the job was done by 9:15 a.m. Our sign will be installed in about 3 weeks. This is truly a project all Master Gardeners can be proud of

Clara Mae Marcotte showing spinning techniques. Hughlene Micheli applying tattoo to child s arm Joyce & Eddie Johnston and Doug Biggs manning the booth Jim Johnson explaining the rain barrel Ryla Cottingham displaying tattoos May Fest at Sebastopol May Fest at the Sebastopol State Historical Site in Seguin offered family-oriented activities such as music, a maypole dance, a climbing wall, games, kids prizes, demonstrations of spinning and making pottery, and more from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 8th. Tours of the historic house were available throughout the day. 8 MEMBERS AT WORK On Friday, May 7 th, Barbara McIntyre gave a talk on EarthKind Roses to the St. Paul Evangelical Church Mother/Daughter Banquet. The theme was The Majesty of Roses and there were 44 in attendance. Barbara s talk was based on the Texas A&M EarthKind Rose power point presentation and she was assisted by Elaine McIntyre on the computer. They passed out EarthKind Rose brochures as well as catalogs from the Antique Rose Emporium. They also had door prizes: a Souvenir de St. Anne s rose, a Belinda s Dream propagated by Nancy Stuhl, and a tote embroidered by Cardinal Embroidery. Barbara was deluged by questions and comments afterwards and everyone said her passion for roses was really apparent. The Master Gardener Association is a volunteer organization We need YOU to help with our projects. MEMBER NEWS Texas Country Reporter celebrates the history, emotion and beauty that make Texas and Texans so unique. Since 1972 Bob Phillips has traveled the backroads and told the stories of real Texans - ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Recently, Texas Country Reporter interviewed Seguin sculptor and Guadalupe County Master Gardener- Marika Bordes. Bob Phillips and his team came to Seguin to meet with Marika and to visit her studio and gallery. Team members also took the opportunity to film her exhibit at the George Washington Carver Museum in Austin. The segment aired May 16th at 9:30 a.m. on Channel 5 in the San Antonio area. If you missed it, you may find reruns by visiting Congratulations Marika! Marcia Richardson - getting married June 19th Marcia Richardson is busy (up to her eyebrows) getting her "stuff" moved to her new home in Castroville. She will be gardening in the shade at her new home, so will be researching and learning about shade gardening. She will be gardening in sandy loam!!! (Eat your heart out!!)

Tyler Rose Garden, the Master Gardener Way by Clara Mae Marcotte After 40 years in Texas, Ron and I finally drove up to Tyler to see the roses. They were beautiful, of course, but even more lovely in the southeast corner of the garden was a multipurpose demonstration garden planted and opened by the Smith County Master Gardeners in They call it their IDEA Garden (innovate demonstrate educate apply). It does a great job of stimulating ideas and shows how you can use them in your own garden. (I came home wishing once more Various Compost Displays that foxglove would grow for me.) Their 10,000 square foot garden was bigger than our Extension garden. It had 250 varieties of flowers, trees, shrubs, grasses, ground cover and bog plants. Of course, all of these were for the northeast section of Texas, and Foxglove some of their mulch was pine needles. They evidently had some money to set up the garden as their walkways were crushed granite or concrete (made to look like bricks). One area of the garden concerned compost and mulch with boxes containing literature handouts on Building a Compost Bin, Lazy Persons Compost, and Miracle Mulch. Along with each handout box was a display, including a 3-bin compost system, and several commercial bins. (I would like to see a section like this Brick-like Walkway on the west end of our Extension garden, but using pallets instead of commercial bins.) In another section of the garden was a 55-gallon drum (with a faucet on the bottom) under the downspout of their shed gutters. A Xeriscape section of the garden showed a representative selection of plants, and the handout listed East Texas suitable varieties. Handouts about Crape Myrtles spoke out about crape murder and gave a wonderful list of varieties and characteristics (which I wish I had had before I bought mine). Another handout was in front of the Butterfly Garden. The Smith County MGs have managed to get their garden designated as a Monarch Way Station. (Can we do this?) Listed and growing are nectar plants and larval host plants. To attract human visitors the front of the garden has a perennial display, the rainbow border, with year-round color. Within the garden is a bench or two so one can sit and contemplate nature. The brochure says that all the plants are grown in an environmentally friendly manner using water conserving methods. (Remember that they get much more rain than we do. In fact, there was a cover over the 3-bin compost system.) For those of you who would like more information, Smith County MGs have a website with a wonderful section on the IDEA garden with lots of plant photos:

Bulb Chipping - by Sandy Foss At our propagation class in November, one of the techniques we learned was bulb chipping. Most gardeners used division as their standard technique for propagating bulbs, but if you have time and patience and want a lot of new plants, chipping is a method to consider. Chipping bulbs is for bulbs that are called tunicate bulbs, such as daffodils, tulips or amaryllis. The onion is a tunicate bulb. Next time you have one, cut it lengthwise and have a look. The center is where new leaves will develop. The base (the bottom) is the basal plate, where the roots shoot off. The bulb is more complex but if you orient yourself to the basal plate and the developing flower bud (the center core) you have what you need to identify the tunicate bulb and you are ready to propagate. You need the bulbs, a clean container, clean perlite and a sharp knife. Using one or two bulbs, you can make up to 32 new plants depending on your patience and skill. One of the cautions from the class: use only bulbs that are native to our area. Remove the foliage with your sharp knife, cut the bulb length wise, carefully so the basal plate is evenly divided between the 2 pieces. Cut the bulb into 8-16 slices, like an orange, being sure each slice has a piece of basal plate (toss out any that do not). I tried 8 slices on my paper white. Waiting for the results depends on your patience and the size of your bulb. Place the bulb on moistened perlite. Try to cover the basal plate in the perlite leaving the rest of the bulb exposed. Wait. Be Patient. The bulb will wither, turn brown and look dead. Keep your perlite moist, but do not over water - this is the most frequent problem in growing the bulb. Eventually you will see a small leaf from the debris. As the leaf is growing, roots will be developing. Once you have several leaves, transplant the new plant to potting soil. Once well established, the bulbs can be moved into a larger container or into the garden. We chipped our bulbs in November and were just beginning to get shoots in February. They are about ready to go into potting soil now. I believe I tended to overwater. With the perlite that is easy to do, so be cautious with watering. This is another way to propagate your bulbs, if you have the time, and want to try something new. Have fun. New growth Slicing the bulb This information and the pictures come from the Texas Master Gardener Specialist Plant Propagation Program. In the perlite

Volunteer Opportunities MORE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES There are a number of volunteer opportunities available for Master Gardeners. First of all, there are several projects where a coordinator is needed. This, of course, does not mean you do all the work. It means you find volunteers or set workdays. Christmas social Cibolo Ag Days in November (Bob Davis has volunteered!) Pecan Festival in October Guadalupe County Fair in October (need coordinator and lots of volunteers Ag Fair ( need three weeks worth of volunteers) Contact Clara Mae Marcotte at rcm.marcotte@gmail.com or call ORGANIZATIONS DON T RUN THEMSELVES - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED I'm thinking about bringing in some extra hats to the September and October meetings for those of you who don't have one and decorating a ring of some sort for you to throw your hat into. Yes, I'm talking about volunteering to run for the Board of Director positions. Nominations will be open for President-elect, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. If you are not ready for those positions, you could volunteer to fill one of the Standing Committee Chair positions as the Education, Volunteer, or Publicity Coordinator. I'll be putting together a nominating committee in August, so be thinking about it. George Ammermann will be our President for 2012 and he wants to continue having a strong effective Board, as we have had and have now, to help manage our organization. If you have ideas on how to make GCMG a better organization, now is the time to get on board and on the Board. From the desk of Dale Odvody, GCMG Secretary Gardening Events FESTIVAL OF FLOWERS If you went to the Festival of Flowers on May 29th - Send me your report - and pictures, if you have any, for the next Newsletter

This Compost (in part) by Walt Whitman ( ) O how can it be that the ground itself does not sicken? How can you be alive you growths of spring? How can you furnish health you blood of herbs, roots, orchards, grain? Are they not continually putting distemper d corpses within you? Is not every continent work d over and over with sour dead? Where have you disposed of their carcasses? Those drunkards and gluttons of so many generations? Where have you drawn off all the foul liquid and meat? I do not see any of it upon you today, or perhaps I am deceiv d. I will run a furrow with my plough, I will press my spade thru the sod and turn it up underneath, I am sure I shall expose some of the foul meat. Behold this compost! Behold it well! Perhaps every mite has once form d part of a sick person yet behold! The grass of spring covers the prairies, The bean bursts noiselessly through the mould in the garden, The delicate spear of the onion pierces upward, The apple buds cluster together on the apple branches, The resurrection of the wheat appears with pale visage out of its graves, The tinge awakes over the willow tree and the mulberry tree, The he-birds carol mornings and evenings while the she-birds sit on their nests, The young of poultry break through the hatch d eggs, The newborn of animals appear, the calf is dropt from the cow, the colt from the mare, Out of its little hill faithfully rise the potato s dark green leaves, Out of its hill rises the yellow maize stalk, the lilacs bloom in the dooryards, The summer growth is innocent and disdainful above all those strata of sour dead. What chemistry! That the winds are really not infectious, That this is no cheat, this transparent green wash of the sea which is so amorous after me, That it is safe to allow it to lick my naked body all over with its tongues, That it will not endanger me with the fevers that have deposited themselves in it. That all is clean forever and forever, That the cool drink from the well tastes so good, That blackberries are so flavorous and juicy, That the fruits of the apple orchard and the orange orchard, that melons, grapes, peaches, plums, will none of them poison me, That when I recline on the grass I do not catch any disease, Though probably every spear of grass rises out of what was once catching disease. Now I am terrified at the Earth, it is that calm and patient, It grows such sweet things out of such corruptions, It turns harmless and stainless on its axis, with such endless successions of diseas d corpses, It distills such exquisite winds out of such infused fetor, It renews with such unwitting looks its prodigal, annual, sumptuous crops, It gives such divine materials to men, and accepts such leavings from them at last
