2 1 2 Westerhill Farm Blossom Walk Open Gardens 2016 Westerhill Road, Linton ME17 4BS 2016 is the Year of the English Garden and we invite you to visit the selection of fine English gardens opening for Heart of Kent Hospice this season, thanks to these many garden owners. There is something for everyone: a morning tour of educational family fun through the orchard blossom of Westerhill Farm; a stroll through a series of charming garden rooms at Knowle Hill Farm, or an evening glass of wine and tapas at two neighbouring but contrasting gardens in Leeds village. By visiting these gardens you are supporting your local Hospice and helping us to give those with a life-limiting illness the choice, opportunity, dignity and compassionate care they need at the end of their life. To find out more about any of the gardens taking part in the Open Garden programme, or if you have a garden you are proud of and would like to open for the Hospice next year, please contact the Fundraising Team on the contacts below. We also list on page 14 those National Gardens Scheme (NGS) gardens within our own Hospice area which open for charity. Children will love this behind the scenes orchard tour and quiz. All their questions about fruit will be answered! Learn about the challenges and joys of running a successful working fruit farm. Enjoy the renowned views from the Greensand ridge. Buy some of the Westerhill Farm produce once you ve enjoyed a delicious selection of tea and cake. The garden, which featured as Garden of the Month of May 201 in Kent Life, has been designed for ease of maintenance and to be in harmony through the seasons. Features include a stunning formal rose garden, pond with a stream leading into a small lake, paved courtyard and superb views of the North Downs. Garden design fans will be delighted by the divided views and vistas which were the work of students of the English Gardening School. Sunday 22nd May, 2-pm A rare treat to visit Boxley Abbey, founded in 1146 as a Cistercian Monastery until its dissolution in 136. The Wyatts of Allington Castle acquired the site in 140, built the current house and laid out the gardens amongst the Abbey ruins. The garden is around three acres with many magnificent trees. The rose garden is in part bordered by the ancient cloister wall and the water garden is in the ruins of the old Abbey church. A Tudor bowling green is above. Visit the Grade 1 listed hospitium (a medieval barn), with its remarkable scissor truss roof, which at nearly 200 feet is one of the longest in England. In local pub

There is a fine collection of trees and shrubs; sunken pond garden, terraces, bamboos, glen garden and acer lawn. A young pinetum is taking shape. Sculptures are interestingly displayed and there are wonderful open country views. The owners of this stunning Grade II* listed end jetty Hall house and Oast house invite you to visit their exceptionally well-planted three acres. The garden has been designed to be relatively low-maintenance, whilst complementing the 1th Century house. 6 9 10 Heart of Kent Hospice Mere House reston Hall, Aylesford ME20 7U The Street, Mereworth ME18 NB Saturday 2nd July, 2-pm Sunday 3rd July, 2-pm The Hospice garden is a treasured space, providing a tranquil, calm and peaceful environment where our patients can sit comfortably and enjoy the scents and sounds of nature with friends and family surrounded by beautiful planting. Many of our patients are unable to garden regularly at home or have had to give up their gardens so this space has become a haven of year round colour and interest, which is lovingly and regularly tended by dedicated volunteers. Each of our ten Inpatient rooms has an uplifting view of wonderful plants and trees, not to mention the inquisitive local squirrels. There have been a garden, park and ornamental lake here since Mere House was built in Its extensive lawns and borders are bounded by the 19th Century woodland walk and the lake. Over the past 8 years, the owners have redesigned the garden in an informal manner, concentrating on ornamental shrubs and trees with an emphasis on foliage contrast. There are large areas of rough grass where daffodils give way to wild flowers in the summer. Enjoy the house speciality of delicious home-made teas. 4 A 4

8 13 Stoneacre Otham, Maidstone ME1 8RS National Gardens Scheme In 2016 in addition to our own local supporters gardens, over 11 National Gardens Scheme (NGS) private gardens in Kent will open for charity, including Hospice UK, of which our own Hospice is a member. Thank you to all garden owners. The NGS has donated more than 3 million to Hospice UK since 1996, last year alone donating 00,000. Here are the gardens in our local area opening for the NGS from the end of April. See what s in store for the future at Stoneacre as they share the progress of their first year. Once home to Rosemary Alexander, rincipal of the English Gardening School, the beautiful cottage-style garden has developed over the centuries around the timber-framed Yeoman s house. The garden includes sculpted lawns, herbaceous borders and a secret garden. Of particular note is the strawberry tree - Arbutus unedo.
