2 PAGE 2 Ornamentals February Gardening Calendar Weeks 1-4: Water evergreens if the soil is dry and unfrozen. Weeks 1-4: Take geranium cuttings now. Keep the foliage dry to avoid leaf and stem diseases. Weeks 2-3: Seeds of slow-growing annuals like ageratum, verbena, petunias, geraniums, coleus, impatiens and salvia may be started indoors now. Weeks 4: Dormant sprays can be applied to ornamental trees and shrubs now. Do this on a mild day while temperatures are above freezing. Vegetables Week 1-4: Season extending devices such as cold frames, hot beds, cloches and floating row covers will allow for an early start to the growing season. Week 1-4: Start onion seeds indoors now. Week 1-4: Don t work garden soils if they are wet. Squeeze a handful of soil. It should form a ball that will crumble easily. If it is sticky, allow the soil to dry further before tilling or spading. Fruits Week 3-4: Begin pruning fruit trees. Start with apples and pears first. Peaches and nectarines should be pruned just before they bloom. Week 3-4: When pruning diseased branches, sterilize tools with a one part bleach, nine parts water solution in between cuts. Dry your tools at day s end and rub them lightly with oil to prevent rusting. Miscellaneous Weeks 1-4: To avoid injury to lawns, keep foot traffic to a minimum when soils are wet or frozen. Weeks 1-4: When sowing seeds indoors, be sure to use sterile soil mediums to prevent diseases. As soon as seeds sprout, provide ample light to encourage stocky growth. Weeks 1-4: Repot any root-bound house plants now before vigorous growth occurs. Choose a new container that is only 1 or 2 inches larger in diameter than the old pot. Weeks 1-4: To extend the vase life of cut flowers you should: 1. - Recut stems underwater with a sharp knife Remove any stem foliage that would be underwater Use a commercial flower preservative Display flowers in a cool spot, away from direct sunlight. Weeks 1-2: Now is a good time to learn to identify trees by their winter twigs and buds. Weeks 1-2: Branches of pussy willow, quince, crabapple, forsythia, pear and flowering cherry may be forced indoors. Place cut stems in a vase of water and change the water every 4 days. Weeks 2-4: Watch for squirrels feeding on the tender, swollen buds of Elms, Hickories, Oaks and other trees as spring approaches. Weeks 2-4: Maple sugaring time is here! Freezing nights and mild days make the sap flow. Weeks 2-4: Begin to fertilize house plants as they show signs of new growth. Plants that are still resting should receive no fertilizers yet. Weeks 3-4: Now is a good time to apply appropriate sprays for the control of lawn weeds such as chickweed and dandelion. Weeks 3-4: Tall and leggy house plants such as dracaena, dieffenbachia and rubber plants may be air layered now. Weeks 3-4: Save grape vine prunings for making into attractive wreaths and other craft objects. Weeks 4: Late winter storms often bury birds natural food supplies and a well stocked feeding station will provide a lifegiving haven for our feathered friends. Weeks 4: Encourage birds to nest in your yard by providing water and by putting up bird houses. Planting suitable shrubs, trees, vines and evergreens will provide wild food sources and nesting habitat. Gardening Calendar supplied by the staff of the William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening located at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri. (
3 Hello, Everyone. Thank you to all club members who were able to attend the January meeting. It was so nice to see everyone after a long holiday break. I especially appreciated the warm installation ceremony for new board members. The beautiful rose bouquet lasted over a week and it is now drying, upside-down on a hanger so I may enjoy it even longer. Thank you to Rita Burks for the wonderful food. If you haven't already noticed, the recipe is posted on our FaceBook page. A big thank you also goes out to last year's board members for scheduling an interesting speaker for the meeting. Larry Dobson, Vice President of the Missouri Blue Bird Society, gave us a lovely presentation and left us with many handouts regarding blue bird watching, feeding, and housing. If you could not make the meeting but are interested in the handouts, please let me know and I will see if we can make additional copies available. Project lists were made available at the meeting. Many volunteers signed up to help make our projects successful again this year. The same great crew will be planting at 6 Central Bank locations again this year. This effort brings a nice cash donation to the club every year, so we all appreciate the efforts you will be making later this year. We have a lot of interest in making the Willmore Lodge gardens a showcase and are patiently awaiting the return of Patricia Griffin, Head Gardener, to share ideas and make some plans. So far we have lead gardeners for the front of the building, the herb, rose, and gazebo gardens. We are still seeking leads for the entrance, hillside, and swimming pool gardens. Many of the gardens have crew volunteers as well, so check the sign up sheets at the next meeting to see which opportunity works best for you. As I write this message, I'm sitting in my sunroom hoping my fig and kaffir limes trees make it through the winter. Today's sunshine is deceiving. Temperatures are at record lows this week and it is difficult to think of gardening outdoors. The good news is that Spring is only 6 weeks away. So I welcome my seed and plant catalogs and look forward to next month's meeting where Jeannie Robbins will speak about starting seeds. I hope to see everyone there -- at Willmore 6:30 PM. Let's hope it is warmer in February than it has been in January! See you in February!, Tamara PAGE 3

6 PAGE 6 Lake Area Master Gardener Member Spotlight Kathy Fayant I am one of those rare people who actually grew up on the Lake of the Ozarks. My parents moved us to the Lake in 1961 to open Millstone Lodge. I started High School that year at Morgan County RII in Versailles. My Dad now owns and operates Rock Harbor Resort in Sunrise Beach at the age of 89. My sister and brother and their spouses are managers of the resort. After graduating from High School I went to the University of Missouri where I graduated with a BS in Elementary Education in June of I met my husband John at MU and we married on January 28, We are celebrating our 45 th anniversary this month. After graduation we moved to St Louis where I taught 1 st grade for Hazelwood School district and John taught middle school science for Ferguson Florissant School district. My daughter Beth was born in 1970 and my son Rob was born in I became a full time homemaker and started my first garden at our first home in Ferguson Missouri. I could grow anything there. It wasn t challenging at all. In 1978 we decided to join the real estate boom going on at the Lake and bought a resort of our own. We owned and operated Hickory Grove Resort on Y road in Camden County for 10 years. I found having any type of garden a real challenge there. No time, all rocks, poor soil, in other words a typical Lake garden. After selling the Resort I began working at various stores as a retail manager. I still work part time at Coldwater Creek. When we moved to our present home in the area close to Ha Ha Tonka State Park, I decided to plant some fruit trees and I found actual soil. I couldn t believe it. I could garden again. However, it wasn t quite like St Louis. Everything didn t seem to want to grow. After I became a Master Gardener in 2006 I found out why. There is plenty of Nitrogen but almost no Phosphorous or Potassium in our soil. I did find that Native plants worked really well, so I became hooked on them. I also started a compost pile and found out about Turkey Manure and finally got my vegetable garden and annuals to produce. I still have a problem with critters, but I have just learned to enjoy them and if they don t become too greedy we just share. The native plants seem to bring in lots of birds, butterflies and other insects and I seem to have reached a balance with nature. As a Master Gardener I was the first membership chairman and started the membership directory. I have been a head gardener at the garden walk almost every year. I also was project coordinator for two years. During the time I was project coordinator we helped the Lake of the Ozarks Watershed Alliance with the Healthy Lake Grant and put on two public workshops called Beautiful Yards for a Healthy Lake of the Ozarks. This helped them receive the 319 grant which is helping with projects to keep excess nutrients out of our Lake. I have been active with this and am a Trained Volunteer Evaluator. I also put together the Rain Garden at Willmore Lodge with a partnership between our chapter of Master Gardeners, The Lake of the Ozarks chapter of Missouri Master Naturalists, and LOWA. I also coordinated with Habitat for Humanity in landscaping two homes in Camdenton. I enjoy helping others learn to grow and having fun along the way comes from working with all of you. Kathy Fayant
