2 P a ge 2 V olume 7, I s s u e 2 Ornamentals February Gardening Calendar Weeks 1-4: Winter aconite (Eranthis sp.) and snowdrops (Galanthus sp.) are hardy bulbs for shady gardens that frequently push up through snow to bloom now. Weeks 1-4: Inspect summer bulbs in storage to be sure none are drying out. Discard any that show signs of rot. Weeks 1-4: Enjoy the fragrant blooms of the Ozark Witch Hazel flowering in shrub borders or wooded areas on warm sunny days. Weeks 1-4: Take geranium cuttings now. Keep the foliage dry to avoid leaf and stem diseases. Weeks 2-4: Sow seeds of larkspur, sweet peas, Shirley poppies and snapdragons where they are to grow outdoors now. To bloom best, these plants must sprout and begin growth well before warm weather arrives. Weeks 2-3: Seeds of slow-growing annuals like ageratum, verbena, petunias, geraniums, coleus, impatiens and salvia may be started indoors now. Week 4: Dormant sprays can be applied to ornamental trees and shrubs now. Do this on a mild day while temperatures are above freezing. Vegetables Weeks 1-4: Season extending devices such as cold frames, hot beds, cloches and floating row covers will allow for an early start to the growing season. Weeks 1-4: Start onion seeds indoors now. Weeks 1-4: Don't work garden soils if they are wet. Squeeze a handful of soil. It should form a ball that will crumble easily. If it is sticky, allow the soil to dry further before tilling or spading. Weeks 2-4: Sow celery and celeriac seeds indoors now. Weeks 3-4: Sow seeds of broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and cabbage indoors now for transplanting into the garden later this spring. Fruits Weeks 1-4: Check fruit trees for tent caterpillar egg masses These are laid on twigs in tight clusters that resemble an oblong brown lump of gum wrapped around the stem. Prune off these twigs or destroy the eggs by scratching off the clusters with your thumbnail. Weeks 1-4: Inspect fruit trees for tent caterpillar egg masses. Eggs appear as dark brown or gray collars that encircle small twigs. Destroy by pruning or scratching off with your thumbnail. Weeks 1-2: Collect scion wood now for grafting of fruit trees later in spring. Wrap bundled scions with plastic and store them in the refrigerator. Weeks 3-4: Begin pruning fruit trees. Start with apples and pears first. Peaches and nectarines should be pruned just before they bloom. Miscellaneous Weeks 2-4: Maple sugaring time is here! Freezing nights and mild days make the sap flow. Weeks 2-4: Begin to fertilize house plants as they show signs of new growth. Plants that are still resting should receive no fertilizers yet. Weeks 3-4: Tall and leggy house plants such as dracaena, dieffenbachia and rubber plants may be air layered now. Gardening Calendar supplied by the staff of the William T. Kemper Center for Home Gardening located at the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis, Missouri. (

3 P a ge 3 V olume 7, I s s u e 2 New App to Help People Easily Identify Weeds in Your Lawn or Garden University of Missouri Extension has released a free app for iphones, ipads and Android devices to help people easily identify weeds in the field, lawn or garden. Kevin Bradley, MU Extension weed scientist, unveiled the app at the MU Crop Management Conference, Dec. 19 in Columbia. The app, called ID Weeds, has information on more than 400 plant species that could be encountered as weeds in crop fields, pastures, lawns, gardens or aquatic areas in Missouri and surrounding states, Bradley said. ID Weeds lets users narrow the list of suspects with a series of drop-down boxes for various plant characteristics. Don t worry if you re not familiar with technical terms such as ligules or spatulate. For most characteristics, users can click on what s this? to see an illustration. Clicking on Identify will produce a list of weeds that match the characteristics you ve chosen. The more characteristics you specify, the shorter the list will be. Selecting a weed on the list brings up detailed information and one or more photographs. You can also look up a weed by searching for its common or scientific name, or select from an alphabetical list, from Alligatorweed to Yucca. Proper identification of weeds is important so that you choose an appropriate and cost-effective method of control, said Bradley, who is also an associate professor of plant sciences in the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. The app was developed by James Meng, a programmer for MU Extension Technology and Computer Services (ETCS). ID Weeds is compatible with iphone, ipod Touch and ipad running ios 5.1 or later, and devices running Android 2.2 or later. To download: iphone and other ios devices: itunes.apple.com/app/id-weeds/id Android: Search for ID Weeds at play.google.com/store. A web version is available at weedid.missouri.edu. Be Sure and Check Out the Plant Hardiness Zone Map for Missouri The USDA Plant Hardiness zones divide the United States and southern Canada into 11 areas based on a10 degree Fahrenheit difference I the average annual minimum temperature

6 V olume 7, I s s u e 2 P a ge 6 Hi Everyone! Wow, what a Fantastic January meeting! If you missed it, you missed great FUN!! We had a super turn out and everyone enjoyed the great presentation on Terrarium Gardening! Maybe because it was so energizing to get our hands dirty, and do some planting, in the middle of winter! I especially enjoyed watching everyone's creativity in both container and design. We certainly have many talented folks amongst us! We also received FIVE new members at our very first meeting of the year. We wish to express a hearty big WELCOME to our Club for 2013!! We have a great year planned ahead! On the Saturday following our meeting, several of us made the trip to Kansas City Hospice House to visit with Jean Henry. Of course, it was the one day that winter decided to come full-force so we all have a few stories to tell! Jean was in great spirits and it was truly inspiring to spend some time together! We hope to see you all at the February meeting. Our presentation will be on Hummingbirds, presented by Bill Merritt. Best to all! Jan Mitzel LAMG President Jean Henry would love to hear from you!
