PAGE 2 Ornamentals September Gardening Calendar Cuttings of annuals can be taken now to provide vigorous plants for overwintering. Continue spraying roses that are susceptible to black spot and other fungus diseases. Fall is a great time to invest in spring blooming bulbs. Buy them now while availability is good and then plant them after the ground cools in late October November. Divide and transplant peonies now but make sure the crowns are buried only 1 1/2 to 2 inches below ground level. Deeper planting only keeps the plants from blooming. Look for fall annuals that are tolerant of cooler temperatures. Some suggestions are snapdragon, calendula, pansy, flowering cabbage, stock, viola, dusty miller and poppy. Vegetables and Herbs Compost or till under residues from harvested crops. Sow last seedings of vegetables such as radish, lettuce, spinach and other greens. Harvest herbs to freeze or dry for winter use. Autumn is a good time to add manure, compost or leaf mold to garden soils for increasing organic matter content. Pot up chives, parsley and other herbs and bring into the house to extend the growing season. Enjoy the vegetable displays at your local County Fair! Fruits Prop up branches of fruit trees that are threatening to break under the weight of a heavy crop. Bury or discard any spoiled fallen fruits. These fruits can pass along disease spores to next years crop if not disposed. Pick pears before they are fully mature. Store in a cool, dark basement to ripen. Lawns Begin fall seeding or sodding of cool season grasses. Seedbeds should be raked, dethatched or core-aerified, fertilized and seeded. Keep newly planted lawn areas moist, but not wet. If soils become dry, established lawns should be watered thoroughly to a depth of 4-6 inches. Cool season lawns are best fertilized in fall. Make up to 3 applications between now and December. Do not exceed rates recommended by fertilizer manufacturer.

What did grandma do when she saw a native plant that she wanted in her garden????? With the continued preservation of native species, recommendations are to leave the plant and collect the seed. While grandma may have transplanted the occasional plant I am certain that she knew how to collect seed. Saving seed was and is easy and it provides more than one specimen when germination is successful. Once a plant is found, and permission is granted when necessary, it is important to mark the location in some way and monitor that plant so that seed can be harvested at the correct time. When collecting a sample it is best to collect from multiple plants and leave some seed on each plant so that it will continue to populate the area of harvest. If there is only one plant available consider finding another location or make certain to leave at least 50% of the plant seed on the plant. Collect seed in the afternoon when the plants are dry. Do not collect seed when it is wet. Collection methods vary by the plant type. Grass seed can be stripped from the stem or cut just below the stem and stored. Tree seeds can be picked up from the ground once they fall. A stem tip containing seed can be removed from shrubs or picked by hand. Small cloth bags can be placed over a flower head, such as queen Annes Lace Daucus carota that have very small seeds, or sensitive seed pods, like Indian Pinks Spigelia marilandica, which pop open when touched. If a plant has a pod that is not sensitive, as do Lupines Lupinus spp., then collect the entire pod, allow it to dry completely and then break open the pod to remove the seeds. Prairie flowers that form dry flower heads like Gray-headed Coneflower Ratibida pinnata can be clipped and stored. Those that have a vertical inflorescence or shoot, as does Blue Star Amsonia ciliate or Shining Blue Star Amsonia illustris, can be collected just as you would grass. Remove the seed shoot or run your hand up the shoot and collect the seeds in a paper bag. Some flower seeds can simply be shaken over a paper bag, like Columbine Aquilegia Canadensis, and collected as the ripe seeds let go. Before storage, seeds should be cleaned and dried. There are many ways to clean seed and remove debris. Some inexpensive ideas for seed collection and cleaning can be found at Seed can be dried by laying it flat on a newspaper in an open room. Seed should be stored in bags that are not air tight. Bags should be labeled with the plant name and the date collected. Other information that might be useful is the location of the plant, sun or shade and the parent plant height. When storing, the temperature and humidity together should not total more than 100. Seeds stored at 65 F should not be exposed to more than 34% humidity. Do not allow temperatures in storage to fluctuate. PAGE 3

PAGE 6 Lake Area Master Gardener Member Spotlight JoAnne Gitchell How I Got a Free Purple Coneflower and Ended up Being a Master Gardener I grew up on a farm. No flower beds but lots of vegetables needing to be weeded and then picked and canned during the hottest time of the year. When I left home, I never wanted to have any thing to do with gardening ever again. I kept that philosophy for the next twenty five years. Then, one day, in the late nineties, a friend told me she needed to divide some plants in her yard. She gave me a pot with a plant in it. I dug a hole in the backyard, stuck it in there and figured it was on its own. The next summer, there was a beautiful purple coneflower in my backyard with butterflies on it. My friend thought it was pretty funny when I was so amazed and excited. She gave me some more plants. The next year I had purple coneflowers and Shasta daisies both. It went downhill from there. Every year, she gave me different plants and taught me about them. Probably, the first thing I learned was the difference between annual and perennial! I sure planted a lot of flowers that never came back up! I remembered all the flowers my grandmother used to have when I was very young. I started planting some of them. And then, my husband and I moved to a new house with three acres instead of a city lot! It was bare. It needed plants. I discovered I liked learning about and planting things, watching them come up early in the spring and then flower. I discovered the more I planted, the more I had hummingbirds, butterflies, birds, and critters hanging.

LAKE AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS LETTER PAGE 7 Another friend was an early graduate of the Missouri Master Gardener program. She encouraged me to take the class and introduced me to the wealth of information the Extension Center had available. She told me you learn a little about a lot of different topics in the class. At that time, it was offered only during the day so it was something I had on my bucket list to do when I retired. And then, in 2003, along came Ted Fry and the evening Master Gardener class! I really liked the community volunteer and education aspects of the program. I have also met some awesome people and learned so much about so many topics since the class ended and the club began. I was treasurer for four years and am now the secretary. Being a part of the board is a very unique experience. I highly recommend all members try it. I have been interested in natives ever since the class. They are very hardy, inexpensive, and beautiful. They provide much needed habitat for birds, insects, and animals. I am a big fan of using them as much as possible. I feel my natives restore some of the environment for those that were here long before us which humans (myself included in my younger days) may have destroyed. Maybe I help one bird, one butterfly, or one tree frog have a place to survive. In the last fourteen years, I believe Bob and I have probably hatched close to 140 bluebird babies, fed hundreds of hummers, and provided food for hundreds of monarch caterpillars. Don t get me wrong. I also have the old plants my grandmother grew such as hollyhocks, crepe myrtle, and daffodils (I gave up tulips when the deer found my yard). I have oriental lilies and zinnias that my dad started growing after he retired and didn t need all those vegetables anymore. My husband and I started a memorial flower bed for a college friend who died. He was a big supporter of prairie restoration in northwest Missouri. Every time I see it in bloom, I think of him. My mother-in-law had hen and chickens she gave us. I think of her every time I walk past them. I have a Knockout rose in memory of my mother. I have a friend (thank you, Mary) who has shared daylilies with me, so now I grow them and they are beautiful. I have English Ivy and yucca that I do not particularly like, but I live with a guy who does, so I grow them. And of course, every year I do some containers of annuals for the hummingbirds, butterflies, tree frogs, and humans to enjoy. So, after fourteen years, I still don t grow vegetables. My flower beds and yard may be messy and unorganized, but they are full of color, always blooming, provide habitat for birds, insects, and wildlife, and make me very happy. I can tell you where most of plants came from and why I planted them. I can sit on our gazebo, watch the deer, birds, butterflies, chipmunks, lizards, frogs, rabbits, and turtles visit, and remember friends and family. Who knew all this would be the result of one free purple coneflower.

PAGE 8 A message from the 2014 President... August is nearly over and September is coming fast! The lake is already less busy now that school is back in session. Where did summer go? I hope everyone had a great summer with lots of time for family and friends -- and gardening. As I look at my container garden, I realize that it is time to put a couple plants to rest for the summer. I won't mind not watering them, but will miss the fresh harvest. It reminds me that I need to get to Willmore Lodge to deadhead, weed, and plan for fall plantings in the herb bed. If anyone has any thoughts about what the bed may need, please let me know. The more input, the better. We have just 3 more meetings this year! It's time for the board to select a nominating committee for new officers next year (President, Vice President, and Treasurer). Please be thinking about volunteering for a leadership role -- it has been a rewarding experience for me. We will be voting in October, then we have our final meeting in November. Hope to see everyone at the September meeting, again to be held at the Sunrise Beach fire station training center across from Hurricane Deck Elementary School on Hwy 5. If you didn't make it to last month's meeting, the training center is located behind the fire station and you enter the doors at the side of the building (not the front entrance). See you soon! Tamara LOWA is Having its Fall Native Plant Sale with plants from Prairie Hill Farm.
