1 New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. 83 rd Annual Meeting May 25, 2016 Manchester Country Club, Bedford, NH A Special Meeting was held on May 25, 2016, before the start of the Annual Meeting to accept Fiona McKenna of the Manchester Garden Club as interim District II Director. Board members present: J. Lutkevich, V-P Kimball, Pres. Goodwin, Treas. Lawrie, and Rec. Sec. Fleming The NHFGC, Inc. 83 rd Annual Meeting was called to order at 9:45 a.m. by President Jane Goodwin. Inspirational Reading by Rosalind Spiller of Goffstown Community GC. Pledge of Allegiance led by Susan Johnson of Bow GC Introductions by Judy Motta, Protocol Chairman acknowledging the Board of Directors. Welcoming remarks by Joyce Kimball, acting District II Director, welcoming all to Spring Symphony, the 83 rd Annual Meeting. Joyce announced the hosting clubs and the Tablescape program for the event. Response by Marcia Esche, District III Director inviting the members to the 83 rd NHFGC Fall Meeting September 28, 2016 at The Inn at East Hill Farm in Troy, NH. Preliminary Credentials Report by Fiona McKenna of Manchester GC. Honored guests 0 State Presidents 1 State Officers 10 Past NHFGC Presidents 5 - Club Presidents 17 Clubs attending 18 Members in attendance 126. Secretary s Report Approval Committee: Marty Lennon, Hookset GC; Carolyn Taylor, Hooksett GC; and Lorraine Dacko, Bow GC. Sue Miner made the motion to accept the Secretary s Report Approval Committee, seconded and carried. President Goodwin thanked the Page and Secretary s Report Approval Committee for their help. Lolly thanked her committee from the 82 nd Annual Meeting. Time keeper: Carol Croasdale GCGC and Caitlyn Croasdale of GCGC. Motion by Kaye Galloway to accept the Timekeepers; seconded and carried. 1

2 Pres. Goodwin explained the demise of the mailed copy of the Lilac Letter due to rising costs. The letter will be ed on the quarterly schedule and clubs are encouraged to print a few copies for members who do not have accounts. Treasurer s Report Treas. Lawrie read the budget and financials. Motion to accept the budget for by Mary Lea Daily. Seconded and carried. Report is attached. District Director reports are included at end of minutes. District I Juliedele McFarlane mentioned outstanding achievements by each of the clubs. District II Joyce Kimball commented on the hours of service donated. District III Marcia Esche said that District III is focusing on pollinators. District IV Blanche Garone expounded on the clubs commitment to their communities and introduced the clubs in District IV. President Goodwin introduced interim District II Director Fiona McKenna of Manchester GC and thanked Fiona for taking on the duties of District II Director. Awards Presentation by Ellie Morrison: (Awards list attached). President Goodwin then presented the President s Bowl. Jane said it was incredibly difficult to pick the winner. District IV won. Joyce Kimball gave out the Publicity Awards. (List is attached.) Life Membership Awards were presented by Pat Mulone. Scholarship Committee Report: by Audrey Vargish. Audrey spoke about the pleasure the committee had interviewing prospective scholarship recipients and they are: NHFGC scholarship -$500 to Emily Balcom of Londonderry. The Alice & Karl Jorda Scholarship to Daryn Clevesy of Center Barnstead. The Jean L. Thompson Scholarship divided among 3 recipients: Molly Jacobson of Merrimack; Kaitlyn Orde from Portsmouth and Samantha Werner of Seabrook. Complete report is attached. The recommended revision of Article XIV Section I of the By-laws was moved by Lolly Fleming and seconded by Virginia Urdi. Motion carried. President s Message: Pres. Goodwin spoke about the importance of maintaining the environment for pollinators by spreading wildflowers or just growing plants on your own deck or back yard. She spoke about the importance of conserving in our own state as compared to nationwide and she is looking for people interested in protecting our 2

3 endangered species and working with the Audubon Society, locally. She began her vision by passing out wildflower seeds and encouraging us to plant them. President Goodwin presented the Presidential Citations: Joyce Kimball was the first honoree for juggling three (3) major roles for the NHFGC. She is the 1 st Vice-President of the NHFGC; acting District II Director, and also managing this meeting and all the publicity and duties that go along with it. Janet Snowden from the Atkinson GC was the next honoree for participating fully in the Farm and Forest Expo and setting up the booth. Door prizes came next and then we adjourned for lunch and socializing at 11:45am. Invocation by Winifred Schmidt Manchester Garden Club On Going Business: After lunch Fern Doucette spoke about our on-going project of the Smokey Bear/Woodsy owl contest. Program introduction by Fiona McKenna. A demonstration on table designs by Marie St.Onge of Paisley Floral Design Studio. Final credentials reported by Fiona McKenna Manchester Garden Club. 13 DISTRICT II ANNUAL REPORT 2016 ANNUAL MEETING NH FEDERATION OF GARDEN CLUBS, INC. Manchester Country Club, Bedford, NH BOW GARDEN CLUB: Susan Johnson, President The Bow Garden Club enjoyed a particularly fruitful year, having increased their membership rolls by several percent. They participated in their town s Bow Pride Week where citizens and community organizations pitched in and selected a task from a master Wish List created by town officials. The garden club chose an overgrown patch of garden next to the Community Center to rehab, which they weeded, amended and planted with easy-to-care for perennials which the town will now maintain. The garden club collected 132 pairs of pajamas and 75 books this year for their Pajama Project which they donated to their local Friends of Forgotten Children. The garden club is particularly proud of their high school garden club, The Juniors who received both a civic beautification and a horticulture award at last year s award presentations. GOFFSTOWN COMMUNITY GARDEN CLUB: Carol Croasdale,President The Goffstown Club continues to provide their members with an eclectic variety of programs and workshops each year covering all facets of the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Club s Mission Statement: To promote the love of gardening, floral design, civic beautification and environmental responsibility by including programs on Pruning, Foraging for mushrooms, Flower Arranging, Bees, Bats and Dragonflies. They also worked hard at helping to keep Goffstown beautiful through their civic beautification efforts. As Club President Carol Croasdale reported Keeping up with the plantings around town is interesting to say the least since our roundabout and the tree and perennials we planted within it have been run over numerous times. But like hardy perennials, the Goffstown Community Garden Club keeps on blooming! HOOKSETT GARDEN CLUB: Marty Lennon & Carolyn Taylor, Co-Presidents Our Hooksett Garden Club reaped the benefits of the irrigation system they were instrumental in getting installed at the Hooksett Public Library gardens they maintain with a crop of extra beautiful flowers this past year. So many townspeople commented on them the garden club placed detailed plant markers next to each plant to identify it. In June, they continued their annual tradition of honoring Freedom Fighters, both Past and Present with a ceremony at the site of the patriotic tree the club planted in 2006; The club sponsored St. Catherine s school in Manchester in our Smokey Bear/Woodsy Owl poster contest and had a 5 th Grade winner! In October they held a garden therapy class for Hooksett seniors for the third year in a row. 13

15 Publicity Press Book Chairman s Report May 25, 2016 Annual Meeting Manchester Country Club, Bedford NH Submitted by: Joyce A. Kimball Only six (6) Publicity Press Books, National Garden Clubs Award #44, were received this year, one less than in recent years, and one for the first time. A little disappointing to be sure. Although I do understand with all the technology now available for us to document our clubs print media, etc., leading some of us to think a scrapbook of published newspaper and newsletter articles, website postings, etc. is superfluous. I would ask you to think of the Publicity Press Book are a great reference source allowing you to see all your annual club activities a-year-at-a-glance. And what a way for your publicity chairmen to show off their year of hard work! Press books are so much simpler and inexpensive than preparing a club scrapbook because you are only affixing published articles and photos on plain pages in a booklet in chronological order. No frills! Please let me know if you are interested in putting together a Publicity Press Book for your club in the future. I would be happy to help you. Thank you. LARGE CLUB (iii) members First Place (98%) Second Place (96%) OLD HOMESTEAD GARDEN CLUB (63 members) DERRY GARDEN CLUB (71 members) EXTRA-LARGE CLUB (iv) 100+ members First Place (99%) OPECHEE GARDEN CLUB (100 members) Second Place (97%) MOUNTAIN GARDEN CLUB (167 members) Congratulations to all the clubs that participated. Please be certain to pick up your Publicity Press Books from the display table when you leave today. You will find a summary of the judges comments inside your books. NOTE: Each of the four (4) entries that received First Place distinction at the state level were advanced to regional judging to compete with the First Place entries submitted by our five (5) sister New England State clubs.
