1 Newsletter for Since 2000, and still growing we dig life! President s message - Our Plant Sale this year is underway and Alida is spearheading this project wonderfully. This year s Plant Sale will be Saturday, MAY 12 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Old Macedonia Fire Station at 9683 Valley View Road, in Macedonia. I am very excited about our new location and our great relationship with Macedonia. Mary Chieffe has also been working hard on developing our new Picture Roster for our 2012 members. If you do not have a picture on our roster from the past, or you would like to update your photo, please be sure to either send in your picture, it or your picture can be taken at our next meeting. Thank you and please get your picture in to Mary as soon as possible. This year I m trying to bring in some different things for our members to enjoy, such as crafts, outing type garden tours and some contests. We are definitely a group who likes to have some fun, so I hope you will join us, as we take on our new ventures. Best wishes and see you soon! Saturday, May 12th, 2012 at Old Macedonia Fire Station 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM Plans are really revving up for our Annual Plant Sale. Alida, Plant Sale Chairman, will present more details at our meeting, Wednesday, April 18 th. She has exciting news to share - do not miss this meeting. Hale Farm & Village I wanted you to know that I have heard from Beth Goran, head gardener, at Hale Farm and Village, who will be speaking at our April meeting. She has advised me that the site manger and the education coordinator will also be coming with her to tell our club about the many opportunities that are available for gardening clubs at Hale Farm. Jackie Seremak Gardening is a journey, not a destination.

5 April GARDEN CLUB FEATURE Sandra Rhoa How long have you been gardening? I've been gardening for about 45 yrs. Part of which (18 yrs.) was the gardens at St. Monica's Church. How long have you been a member of the club? 5 yrs. I joined the club when I moved to Northfield. If time or money would not be a factor, what would you add to your garden? Flowering trees, so beautiful this time of year. What are some things you really enjoy about gardening? Every part of it. Weeding, working the soil, dead-heading, making it look fresh. If you could have only one plant in your garden, what would it be? Endless Summer Hydrangea. What plant or flower has been your biggest challenge? Passion flower vine. Are you going to try anything new this year in the garden? I planted a Wisteria which I'm hoping is a miniature. Looks good so far. To me, spring means fresh and new! I ve had a chance to store up some energy and I am now ready to enjoy another year in the garden. It s exciting and refreshing to see my favorite plants pushing their way through the soil after a long rest. Happy Gardening! Peg Krutko, Newsletter Editor The gardener who plans reaps the greatest reward.

7 Are Plants like People?? Of course. There are many similarities between people and plants. Both have a beginning and an end. They each have a good opportunity to live a long life providing they live in a good environment. When we keep ourselves and our environment healthy, the less likely we are to have health problems, and the same for plants. They, too, need a healthy and stress free environment in order to survive and not be susceptible to attracting bugs, and diseases. There are many products on the market we can use that will enable us and our plants to grow happy and healthy. Read the labels carefully. Doing so will save time, effort, disappointment later on, and hopefully we both can survive for many years The Globe Thistle Do you need a good choice for a low-maintenance specimen to fill an unused area in your garden? The forgotten Globe Thistle might just be the answer. It is a striking plant for that neglected area of the garden that often misses watering. Globe Thistle prefers full sun for strong growth, but can tolerate partial shade, not fussy about soil, very drought resistant, and rarely has any problems. Globe Thistle makes a beautiful addition to a special and different flower arrangement EARTH DAY - APRIL 22, 2012 The April 22 Earth Day, founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, was first organized in 1970 to promote ecology and respect for life on the planet as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution. While Earth Day is not a public holiday, it aims to inspire awareness of and appreciation of our earth s environment that we can make a difference!
