Some people took the voluntary redundancy package, but significantly a high proportion elected to stay on Remploy terms and conditions. Our purpose is to fill the void left by the closure of York factory with regards to the employment of disabled people. We will provide an opportunity in York for decent employment for disabled people. We will, hopefully take on a young apprentice who will have the opportunity to learn woodworking skills that could stand him/her in good stead for the rest of their lives. The City of York has no supported facility where disabled people could be engaged in sustainable employment being paid decent wages. GMB and Unite Trade Unions have supported the idea of a manufacturing base within the City of York that would not only employ disabled people but would be run by disabled people. That is why we are here, that is why we are passionate about the York Disabled Workers Cooperative.
