3 How To and More Clinics in Alphabetical Order This section, always a popular part of the convention, stresses the how to and what with of growing and enjoying your garden. These clinics are designed to allow you to ask questions and learn directly from the speaker in smaller groups where it is easy to interact with the speaker. Clematis With Everything Speaker Linda Beutler Linda will show us how we can use these wonderful plants with our rhododendrons. She will show how Clematis mix with other plants and how they add spice and color to our garden. They are very versatile plants that can be used in containers or mixed in with woody plants, other vines or perennials. This is an exciting presentation that you won t want to miss! Conifers, Special Plants to Enhance Your Rhododendrons Speaker Larry Stanley Texture, color and shape are important elements in the garden. Our rhododendrons give us some of these, but often we need something else to compliment our plants. Here is where the multitude of different conifers fill our needs and add so much to our gardens. Larry, who is an excellent speaker, knows these plants extremely well. You will be both entertained and educated by seeing this excellent presentation! Grafting Made Easy Speaker Patrick Osborn A hands on workshop to teach you how to graft those cuttings that are difficult to root! Here you will have a chance to see how grafting is done and to learn from the best! Growing Rhododendrons From Seed Speaker Gordon Wylie Gordon is well experienced with growing seed and will share successful and simple techniques in growing your own really big rhododendrons from itty bitty seeds. This is a workshop experience with Gordon furnishing hand pollinated or wild collected seed from the ARS Seed Exchange, planting containers and soil media so you will go home with something to grow. Hardy Orchids for Use With Rhododendrons Speaker Dick Cavender How about another superb companion for use with our rhododendrons and azaleas? Well then, you must have some of these wonderful plants. And who knows them better, than Dick? He will delight you with their beauty and entertain you with his presentation style. These are plants that you are sure to want for your garden. This is presented only once, so be sure not to miss it. The History and Hybrids of the Thompson Nursery Speaker Roy Thompson The Thompson family, for nearly 50 years has excelled in plants, especially rhododendrons. While this may sound like a program that pats them on the back, it is not. In fact there are few people as humble in admitting their success as the Thompsons. It is only through severe arm twisting that we are able to present this fine program to you. Yes, you will see the development of the Thompson Nursery, and you will also see the lineage of a wonderful group of hybrids they have produced. This is a seldom offered glimse behind the scenes of where plants originate. Hyrids & Hybridizing in the West, Past, Present & Future Speaker Gwen Bell This presentation is designed to give information about hybridizing and what can be obtained by crossing various rhododendrons. Gwen will show how rhododendrons have changed through hybridizing since Special emphasis is given to Western North America hybrids and the hybridizers who produced them. This is a presentation that will educate and entertain. Don t miss it! Hydrangeas, Extend the Flowering Season Speaker Kristin VanHoose Wow, what a timely program for this conference since hydrangeas are becoming very popular. They should be, as they extend the flowering season, and many have blue flowers, a color often missing in the garden. Hydrangeas make great companions for rhododendrons and add color to our gardens after most of our rhododendrons have finished flowering. We are fortunate to hear this exceptional speaker who is much in demand. Photography, All the Tricks of the Trade Speaker Bill Heller Digital, film, flash, tripod, closeup, I m confused! Well, you won t be after you listen to one of the best photographers around. Bill has taken pictures of rhododendrons for years and has learned more in one year than most of us will ever know. He will share this knowledge with you in this exceptional program, a rare treat! Propagation Through Cuttings, the Easy Way Speakers Mike Stewart & Kathy Van Veen We all want to know how to add to our rhododendron collection, especially with those plants that are hard to buy in your local nursery. Mike Stewart of Dover Nursery and Kathy Van Veen of Van Veen Nursery are two of the best nursery propagators around. Rumor has it that they have been known to put roots on a 12 cedar post, but let s not get carried away! You are going to want to hear this presentation! Rhododendrons for Fragrance in the Garden Speaker Don Wallace Fragrance in the garden, how wonderful! Don has, through much experience and research, found the very best and most fragrant rhododendrons for your garden. Sorry, we can t offer Smellivision, so you will have to imagine the fragrance of each wonderful flower, as he gives this beautifully illustrated talk! Rhododendron Glossary, Exceptional Photographs, Showing the Close-up Beauty of Rhododendrons Speaker Eleanor Philp This is an unusual and wonderful program made up of many excellent photographs. You will enjoy this program if all you do is come to view the wonderful pictures! But there is more to this program than pretty pictures. Have you ever wondered what someone meant when they talked about a leaf petiole? And what is the difference between a petiole and a peticel? Darned if I know, but we will, after we view this outstanding presentation. This is presented only one time!! Trees of Unusual Stature Including Maples Speaker Lucile Whitman While our love may be rhododendrons and azaleas, we need trees to give them shade and provide scale in the garden. Lucile has collected the best trees for a quarter of a century. She will, through good pictures, humorous commentary, and great knowledge entertain you into becoming a tree-aholic, or at least knowing what are the best companion trees for your garden. Dogwoods, Japanese maples, magnolias, or something else, which should you plant? It is so confusing! Lucile will show you the best choices for the garden, though some may be so new, you will need to line up to get them. We are pleased to be able to offer this exceptional presentation.
4 Linda Beutler was a professional florist for years until she discovered clematis! Her personal collection now numbers over 275 species and cultivars. She also is an avid collector of other plants especially perennials and teaches the herbaceous perennials class for Clackamas Community College. She is a writer, lecturer and photographer. She writes for many gardening publications and recently authored her own book Gardening with Clematis published by Timber Press. You will want to hear her! Gwen Bell is exceptionally well known for her expertise in rhododendrons and their history and origins in the west. She is always an outstanding speaker with knowledge and stories about almost every rhododendron produced in the west. Her presentation will educate and entertain. How fortunate we are to be able to listen to her special information about hybrids and hybridizers of the west! Mike Bones, along with his wife Kathy, owns and operates Bones Nursery on the coast near Florence, Oregon. He is also the American Rhododendron Society Membership Committee Chair. The Siuslaw Chapter, which he leads has grown so much that the City of Florence has decided to subtitle itself The City of Rhododendrons. Mike will be sharing ways to keep your chapter s membership alive by nurturing the experienced and enticing the new. Dick Cavender before retiring, used to pilot Union Pacific freight trains up and down the Columbia River. When at home his enthusiasm for hardy orchids, vireyas, other rhododendrons and plants in general was unexcelled. He now owns Red s Rhodies in Sherwood, Oregon, which houses one of the best collections of eastern deciduous azaleas on the west coast, and of course hardy orchids. He is a real missionary in his enthusiasm for plants. Harold Greer is president of Greer Gardens in Eugene, Oregon. He is a past president of the American Rhododendron Society, a Gold Medal recipient and a recognized expert. Harold has contributed enormously to the world of rhododendrons through books, plants, service and dedication. He is an experienced photographer and his pictures have been published in many books and publications including the cover of the Smithsonian magazine. John Hammond lives in England and is a member of the Scottish Chapter. He is currently Alternate Director at Large of the ARS. John recently was awarded the Silver Medal for his outstanding service and devotion to rhododendrons. Many will remember him as chairman of the outstanding 1996 ARS convention in Scotland. John has travelled widely both in the British Isles and abroad in pursuit of his enthusiasm for rhododendrons. His interests are extensive, and include especially rhododendron and garden history and the use of Pacific Northwest hybrids in the United Kingdom. You will be sure to learn from his presentation. Bill Heller is known for the best plant photography around. Using information you can easily understand, Bill will explain the facts about digital and film photography. If you want to remember that beautiful plant in your yard, you need to hear this presentation. You will leave with information that will help you every day! Steve Hootman is co-executive director of the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden in Federal Way, Washington. He has participated in a number of rhododendron expeditions to Asia. He has seen the species in their native home and in our western gardens. Now hear his recommendations of species for YOUR home, whatever your climate. Don Hyatt has been gardening since age three. Among many other degrees, he has a BS in Horticulture. He taught mathematics and computer science for more than 30 years. Now retired, he has devoted even more of his time to rhododendrons and azaleas. Don has studied the native azaleas of the eastern mountains most of his life and knows them like the back of his hand. He has also been a successful hybridizer, introducing well known azaleas such as Yellow Cloud and Mandarin Maid. This is a speaker you will not want to miss, as he not only has knowledge, but wonderful pictures. Speakers Patrick Osborn is the newest member of the Thompson Nursery family after he joined in marriage to Michelle Thompson. With a background in the nursery industry after attending Oregon State University, he has excelled in raising and knowing rhododendrons. One of his specialities is grafting, and he has agreed to give us all his secrets to success. The WRRC is honored to have him share his knowledge with us. Eleanor Philp has been an enthusiast for rhododendrons for many years. In fact as a newer ARS member at the time, she well remembers the first Western Regional Rhododendron Conference held 25 years ago. She is pleased to be a part of this Silver Anniversary Conference. Her qualifications in photography are many, and for several years has been providing the Journal ARS with pictures showing the various flower parts and features. From this she has developed a wonderful, educational program. Larry Stanley of Stanley and Sons Nursery produces many fine conifers at his nursery in Boring, (but it really isn t!) Oregon. And it s more than just a vocation. See what we mean by attending his seminar where you will come to share his passion for the many outstanding cultivars in the conifer world. Richie Steffen is Coordinator of Horticulture at the Elizabeth C. Miller Botanical Garden in Seattle. He studied horticulture at the University of Maryland s Institute of Applied Agriculture before coming west to Washington where he worked for the Rhododendron Species Foundation and Sky Nursery. Richie now manages the rare plant collections for the Miller Botanical Garden and is deeply involved with the Great Plant Picks program. Mike Stewart of Dover Nursery in Sandy, Oregon, is a propagation expert. Mike, along with his wife Maria, owns Dover nursery which is known for its outstanding plants, the best to be found. He is a professional with excellent speaking skills that everyone enjoys. He is also very active with the ARS, being the immediate past president of the ARS. What he says is always worth hearing! Roy Thompson of Thompson s Nursery in Waldport, Oregon is the current patriarch of the family. Following the lead of parents, Willard and Margaret, he and his wife Evelyn have transformed the nursery from a hobby business into one of the best and most beautiful nurseries on the west coast. Located on 120 acres of the best land to be found, Roy and Evelyn excel in producing superb new hybrids, propagating unusual species, and exceptional rhododendron plants for the nursery trade. His program is more than just history of a nursery, it shows what can be done when someone has a real interest in rhododendrons. Kristin VanHoose along with her husband is the owner of Hydrangeas Plus and Bell Family Nursery in Aurora, Oregon. There are few people who have spent as much time studying and growing hydrangeas. She is a superb photographer and will illustrate her presentation with beautiful pictures. Kristin is very articulate, and writes a excellent newsletter on the web for Hydrangeas Plus. Kathy Van Veen is a third generation owner and operator of the world famous Van Veen Nursery in Portland, Oregon. She will entertain and amaze you with her unique ideas for rooting cuttings and growing them into plants. Don Wallace is the owner of Singing Tree Gardens in McKinleyville, California. He is well know for his tremendous knowledge of rhododendrons. Having a special interest in fragrant plants, he has searched long and hard to find the very best fragrant rhododendrons for our gardens. He is an excellent speaker with wonderful pictures. Lucile Whitman owns Whitman Farms. In 1980 she started out to raise fruit and nut trees, but she got sidetracked when seeing unusual trees and shrubs. Soon she was dragging every new tree home and putting it in the ground. She started using Root Control Bags, a unique method to grow trees in the ground and yet transplant them easily. Lucile is a colorful speaker that makes any subject shine! Gordon Wylie received the Gold Medal after serving the ARS as president and in many other capacities. Gordon, a retired attorney, has a magnificent garden in Eugene, Oregon, which he has nurtured from a bare piece of ground to a beautiful tree-covered paradise. He will be sharing successful and simple techniques in growing your own really big rhododendrons from itty bitty seeds.you will want to hear this knowledgeable speaker.

6 We return to where it all Began! In the winter of 1981 a couple walked down the beach below the newly constructed Hilton at Newport, which today is known as the updated, exceptional, resort hotel, the Agate Beach Inn. Could we hold a fall conference and get 100 people to attend? Yes, we could and did get far more attendance than that. By now, several thousand people have had the joy of attending these conferences, and they keep coming back to the next conference over and over again. Cut along line Now we return to the same place for the 25th Anniversary conference. We hope you will enjoy this 25th Anniversary event with us. If you have ever attended, or never attended a WRRC, you must be at this Anniversary celebration. Prizes will be given to the persons who have attended the most WRRC s, and to those that were at the very first one in Newport. You must be in attendance at the 2005 WRRC to receive this recognition! Come and enjoy one of the best ocean view hotels on the Pacific coast. We invite you! This is a Vacation Conference as the first one was, where your family can enjoy the coast, and you can enjoy the conference. It is the best of two worlds, the family at the beach, while you are enjoying your passion for plants. Though we encourage you to stay at our host hotel, which is one of the best hotels on the Oregon coast, we also invite you to bring your RV, camp or stay in one of the many wonderful near by hotels.
