Gardener s death was recorded by the State of California, the state noted his Social Security Number ( , issued in California in 1951), his birth date and place (April 22, 1890, in Oregon), the date and place of his death (July 22, 1969, in Los Angeles), and his mother s maiden name (Casebeer). HJG, a (twin?) brother Joseph, and an older brother Robert might be associated with the three Gardeners living as unaccompanied children in the News & Working Boys Home on San Pedro Avenue in Los Angeles, in the 1900 census, but that Henry and Joseph have different birth dates (December 1892) and no birth place. An ancestry.com tree notes him as born in Gardiner, Douglas County, Oregon, and notes a spouse named Leora Miller (which is consistent with his status as divorced in the 1930 census). Noting the similarity between the surname Gardener, and the putative town of birth (Gardiner, Douglas County, Oregon), as well as the rare mother s surname (Casebeer), we can find a single family of Casebeers, in the 1880 US census, living in Douglas County, Oregon (in the town of Looking-Glass), and the family includes two unmarried daughters: Nancy (age 25) and Sarah (age 20). Nancy (Jane) Casebeer does not appear to have married (she dies as Nancy Casebeer, in 1905). Sarah Filena Casebeer marries a Henry Juhnke (b. Germany 1855, US citizenship 1879) in 1889 in Douglas County, Oregon. In the 1900 census, Henry (occupation: logger) and Sarah are living in Gardiner, Douglas County, Oregon, with their children, including a Harry Juhnke, age 10 (born 1890, presumably in Gardiner), a daughter Marguerite (b Oregon) and a son Samuel (b Oregon). This child of Henry Juhnke and Sarah Casebeer, Henry Lawrence Juhnke, is Henry J Gardner. We can be certain this is the case, as the California Death Index lists Henry L. Juhnke as having died 22 July 1969, with SSN the same death date and SSN as recorded for Henry J. Gardener. In the 1910 census, we find Henry Juhnke, Henry L. Juhnke, Margaret (Marguerite) Juhnke and a younger sibling Guy H. (age 11, who is Samuel under another name, Guy Samuel Hub, which he will use throughout his adult life), living in Spokane, Washington. Sarah Casebeer Juhnke has

2 died (in 1904, in Oregon), Henry Juhnke is working as a laborer for the City of Spokane, and Henry L Juhnke is a harness maker. Some time between the 1910 census and May of 1917, Henry Lawrence Juhnke marries a woman, Pearl A., either in Spokane, or in Santa Cruz. In May of 1917, Henry and Pearl divorce, in Santa Cruz. Harry Lawrence Juhnke registers for the WWI draft on June 15, 1917, in Santa Cruz, California. He gives his address as 121 Soquel Avenue, Santa Cruz; his birthdate as 22 Apr 1890; his birthplace as Gardiner, Douglas County, Oregoin; his occupation as drug clerk for J. H. Horsnyder of 132 Pacific Avenue, Santa Cruz. The signature Harry Lawrence Juhnke is quite similar to HJG s WWII drafgt registration signature, as is his physical description: brown hair, blue eyes. According to the Santa Cruz Evening News, Juhnke is called up in August of 1917, but there are no service records for him to be found. In the 1920 census, Harry L. Juhnke (mistranscribed as Jerhanke) is living in Santa Cruz, California, with Calvin and Sarah Phillips, as a lodger. He is a clerk in the local Woolworth s store. Shortly thereafter, he leaves for Long Beach, having been promoted within the Woolworth s chain. In 1924, his first advertisements as Harry L. Juhnke for mail-order lessons appear, in Popular Science Monthly. Harry J. (Lawrence) Gardener appears for the first time in the public records in the 1930 census (advertising salesman, born Oregon 1891, living at the Bible Institute on South Hope Street in Los Angeles), and 1940 census (proprietor of job printing company, living in the Willard Hotel, no high school graduation), in the Los Angeles area, where we d expect to find him, given the place of publication of his occult material, as well as the start of his career as an author (c. 1930). HJG registers for the WWII draft on April 25, 1942 in Los Angeles County, as Harry Lawrence Gardener, born Oregon , living at 536 South Hope Street (the Bible Institute) and working at 1044 South Olive Street (the location of the Golden Dawn Press). Name and address of person who will always know your address: None. He is buried as Harry Lawrence J.
