3 DEFINING SITE - DIAGRAM Civic Center Water Features Plan View Diagram 1.1 Downtown Los Angeles is a busy bustling city that offers a wide array of cultural experiences depending on which of the many districts you may find yourself in. From Little Tokyo to the Skid Row, Downtown Los Angeles is home to people from all walks of life. With a residential population of about 52,400 people, and a daytime population of 207,440, the city can feel like an over crowded, smog filled, skyscraper enforced human trap. However, the many cultural centers, museums, music halls, and hidden hideaways offer an escape from the monotony of day to day activities, and makes the density of the city bearable. Within these escapes we find beautiful water features such as fountains, water Jets, and reflection pools. Diagram 1.1 explores the water features located in the LA s downtown Civic Center. The Civic Center includes the LA s Grand Park, Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angles, the Music Center Plaza, Mark Taper Forum, the John Ferraro building, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall. The biggest and most well known of these areas is LA s Grand Park. Diagram 1.2, shows a section of the water feature located at Grand Park, as well as each of the other mentioned sites at the Civic Center. 4. N. GRAND AVE. 2. 4 DEFINING SITE - SITE PLAN LA s Grand Park opened its grassy embrace in Formally known as the Civic Center Mall. It went through a $56 Million dollar redesign by Rios Clementi Hale Studios. The original redesign was to be a $775 Million dollar Frank Gehry design. However, the project fell through due to the high bill, and the 2008 financial crash. The park features lush greenery throughout, pink furniture, and at the most northerly end, The Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain. The fountain was there before the redesign, but was very different from what is present now. Althought the main structure is still there in the center, most everything else around it has changed. On the blown up site plan on the right, the main feature has been called out.the main change fountain, was experiential in form. The fountain used to have a typical stand and look experience. Now the fountain has been opened up by allowing the water to reach out to the visitors. Visitors can walk right over the water jets, and are invited to play amongst the fountain, instead of just merely stare at it. 7 COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS By Young Joon Na Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain in Grand Park is Arthur J. Will, was constructed in memory of Arthur J. Will, chief administrative officer, County of Los Angeles, , whose vision and leadership for more than 25 years of service to this community helped provide this great civic center as a symbol of good government and an inspiration for cultural growth. The fountain was orginally built on Civic Center Plaza. Grand Avenue Poject was started and first phase was opened in At the phase, new water feature was added to the Arthur J. Will Memorial Fountain. The new water feature was creating a really shallow water pool (2-3 depth) and making small The Env Plaza is located at fornt of College of Environment Design in California Polytecnic University Pomona. The plaza has quite a square looking open space and there are three planter areas. Most of time, students and facultiy passes by the plaza without noticing or attarcting them. Not much things make them stop to interact or provide a place to rest. Grand Park is located in the Downtown Los Angles and surrounding by many goverments building and some public spaces, so many people pass the park. The Env Plaza also has a lot traffic because people have to pass the plaza to get into rest of unviersity area, but the traffic is less than the Grand Park. Both water fountain (2 tall). And these setting provides perfect setting as kids friendly because kids loves to interact with the water and water fountains to play. The memorial fountian was just located at the middle of park and lack of interaction with people. However, the new water feature brings people to the front the memorial fountain and it block the people to get into the memorial fountain by topograhpical change on the edge of the fountain. The new water feature is located about 5 feets lower than the memorial fountain. The new water feature is a great successful project since it attracts people and make them to inter act with the memorial fountain. sites have different amount of traffic, but they might have quite similar traffic speed because people at the Grand Park use the park as the path to their final destination and also people passes thorugh the Env plaza to get into the rest of campus. Nevertheless, the Grand Park has great attraction to people to interact with some features such as the water fountains. This make poeple to spend more time at the park and give a pleasant experince to people. Therefore, the Env Plaza might use this startegy and adopt into a new desinging the plaza. The succesful thing about the Grand Park is creating the water feature to play, so using a waterjet and create water archs might attract people in the Env Plaza and it might be succesful to do it since the Grand Park was successful

8 Systemize: Flow + Infrastructure Looking down at the historical fountain from the street, it clearly give pedestrians that it is welcoming place where people are love to gather in the site. Also, many kids and families are haning out near fountain as fountain gives cool breeze during hot days. Grand Park s historical fountain brings people into the site as infrastructure as where people are taking public transportation or freeway to move to other places. Also, the fountain itself create a way to make people walk around the site and allow people to interact to the park as they are walking to other street. When designing plaza or any area, the flow and infrastructure is very important key tool to bring people into the site. Grand Park s historical fountain is good example how they organized the site.grand Park is located in LA, historical fountain is located at north area of the park. As the location of the historical fountain is near side walks, it attract people who are walking on the street or people who are driving. LA is one of the most busy and noisy place due to the traffic as there are many companies and buildings in town. Visiting Grand Park is great way spend time in LA as it is one of LA s landmark

9 Allowing Water Jets in middle of the ENV Plaza attract people who are walking around the site. The location of the Water Jets are very similar to the historical fountain in Grand Park where people are allowed to interact with the site instead of walking straight to the destination. Designing Water Jets in front of ENV Plaza, it allows many people to gather in front of the plaza and creates friendly environment. During summer time, ENV Plaza s Water Jects will be more packed with people as it provides cool breeze. Designed ENV Plaza with Water Jet All waters are recycled after uses and by using storm water. Also, Water Jects are turned on for 5 minutes every hour during classes, so that uses of water requirement is not a lot. The location of the ENV Plaza is near two bus stops. People who are waiting for the bus or resting near plaza, they can interact with Water Jets or just watching them. Weavy red lines are where hot air coming from, sunset to sun down, and blue llines represents cool airs. During summer season, the red lines increases as the weather gets ver hot, and it is opposite for winter season. Water Jets feature can be used mostly during summer time where people feel very hot during the day
