A clear, current and demonstrable understanding of the correct operation of chemical and radiological detection instruments is a pre-requisite to their use......but there are inherent difficulties in training and verification of competency with such devices.

The use of real detectors for training mandates the use of hazardous and/or potentially harmful materials. Training with real chemical detectors requires the use of live agent or chemical simulants......and radiological detectors will only respond to radioactive substances.

Chemical Live Agent Training (LAT) &/or training with radioactive materials is a valuable and mandated activity for developing CBRN response skills. The use of detector simulators is complementary to LAT, not a replacement of such activity. The use of detector simulators may enhance and extend the capabilities developed through LAT.

16 Training with detector simulators One of the important benefits of using simulation equipment of this type is its ability to provide empirical evidence that can be used to validate drills and improve the feedback to individual trainees. Every action taken by the trainee is recorded by the instruments, allowing instructors to display detailed error reports after each exercise, with the collective data from multiple exercises potentially being used to help us enhance the quality of our training still further.
