4 Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) by NASA HACCP is a systematic method using seven principles for analyzing a food process and determining the possible chemical, physical, and biological hazards within that process. Life Safety Code by NFPA According to the NFPA: every new and existing building or structure shall be so constructed, arranged, equipped, maintained, and operated in accordance with the codes as to provide a reasonable level of life safety, property protection and public welfare from the actual and potential hazards created by fire, explosions, and other hazardous conditions. National Fire Protection Association, Inc. (NFPA) The National Fire Protection Association is an independent, international membership organization. For more than a century, NFPA has been dedicated to protecting people and their property from the devastating effects of fire. In some way, virtually every building, process, design, and installation in society today is affected by codes and standards developed through NFPA s true consensus system. Through NFPA s National Fire Codes, as well as its education and community outreach programs, NFPA continues to be the worldwide advisor on fire safety and protection. National Restaurant Association (NRA) The National Restaurant Association was created in 1923 by industry leaders who recognized that there are some things restaurateurs can do better when working together than they can do working alone. To this day, that credo serves as a basic principle for the Association as it continues to serve its members by representing, educating and promoting the restaurant industry. National Sanitation Foundation International (NSF) Founded in 1944, the National Sanitation Foundation is a nonprofit, noncommercial organization whose mission is to develop and administer programs relating to public health and the environment in the areas of service, research and education. NSF, along with industry, officials, business, federal and state regulatory agencies, and the public, develops nationally uniform and voluntary consensus standards for products and services. North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) NAFEM s mission is: to develop and promote cooperative programs and activities that will improve the level of professionalism; to provide a vehicle for broadening knowledge within the foodservice equipment and supplies industry; and to efficiently manage a quality association within a budget that returns maximum benefit to all members. 5 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) The mission of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is to save lives, prevent injuries and protect the health of America s workers. To accomplish this, federal and state governments must work in partnership with the more than 100 million working men and women and their six and a half million employers who are covered by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of Underwriters Laboratory, Inc. (UL) Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) is an independent, not-for-profit product safety testing and certification organization. Since their founding in 1894, they have held the undisputed reputation as the leader in U.S. product safety and certification. Building on their household name in the United States, UL is becoming one of the most recognized, reputable conformity assessment providers in the world. Today, their services extend to helping companies achieve global acceptance, whether it is an electrical device, a programmable system, or a company s quality process. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) USDA Mission: enhance the quality of life for the American people by supporting production of agriculture: ensuring a safe, affordable, nutritious, and accessible food supply, caring for agricultural, forest, and range lands, supporting sound development of rural communities, providing economic opportunities for farm and rural residents, expanding global markets for agricultural and forest products and services, and working to reduce hunger in America and throughout the world. United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA or USEPA) The mission of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is to protect human health and to safeguard the natural environment air, water, and land upon which life depends.
