September was a busy month for us here at Broadview School! Guest author Sigmund Brouwer spoke to the school about the power of storytelling and how to be engaging writers. We had Canada Goal present to us about the importance of a focused mindset and how we are in control of our learning. Our school raised $ for cancer research and participated in the Terry Fox walk/run! We also partook in Orange Shirt Day to honour the individuals that were impacted by the Residential School system. Our guest elder Bruce Kequahtooway shared his shocking experiences in Residential School, and it was an emotional morning for us. I have been so impressed with the students in our school and their engagement with learning the past month. Every student is participating and pushing themselves in class. Our students have done an excellent job of demonstrating our school values of Respect, Responsibility, and Kindness! We as a staff are so proud of how well this school year is kicking off and hope to see it continue! I also want to give a shout out to the amazing staff of this school. The amount of extra time each and every employee puts into their work has been for the students of this school, and I feel privileged to work with such an extraordinary group of people. Finally, a big congratulations to all of our sports teams that have been busy this September! Our senior girls, junior girls, and elementary volleyball teams have had a great start to the season. Our cross-country team is doing phenomenal and has their final few meets these next couple of weeks, and our football team won their first game of the season last week! Let s keep up the great work Bandits! Kayla Vargo- Principal

Band is in full swing and the Broadview Band Parents Association is putting on a fundraiser. If you are a big fan of Mom s Pantry here is your opportunity to support the Broadview School Band students. If you are interested please contact Sandra Ecklund or the band students. All orders MUST be in by October 29th. No exceptions. ORANGE SHIRT DAY: EVERY CHILD MATTERS On Sept 27th, Bruce Kequahtooway came to Broadview School and did individual classroom presentations. He talked of his past experiences in a Residential s\school and explained what it was like being a young boy, taken away from his family, and forced to live a completely different lifestyle than what he was used to. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and shake Bruce s hand, as a sign of respect.
The students at Broadview School raised $1,232 for the Terry Fox Foundation. All proceeds go towards cancer research.
On Sept 17th Broadview School welcomed author, Sigmund Brouwer. His presentation was called Rock & Roll Literacy and he spoke about the importance of telling good stories. Check out his website: rockandroll-literacy.com for free books and songs. Every month students who show success in math skills receive Mathletics awards. Benjamin Goodfellow and Wyatt Fafard received silver awards for the month of September. Great job!
During the month, students who show RESPECT, RESPONSIBILTIY OR KINDNESS will get their name put on a ballot. At the end of the month a nominee will be drawn from elementary, middle years, and high school. For September, Emily Quibell, Layne Rienks and Charmy Alexson Taypotat were drawn for Bandit of the Month. Emily Quibell (grade 9) portrayed the school value: RESPONSIBILITY for looking after the canteen almost every day until the worker roster was made up. Layne Rienks (grade 5) portrayed the school value: KINDNESS for helping another student with a nose bleed. Charmy Alexson-Taypotat (grade 1) portrayed the school value KIND- NESS for being so loving to all around her.
Each month, Mr. Goertzen puts up a math problem outside his classroom. If a student gets it correct they receive an added 5% on a math exam (excluding the final exam), or other prizes. Unfortunately, not one student got the correct answer for September s math problem. Stay tuned for next month s winners! On September 12, the grade 5/6 class attending the Treaty 4 Celebrations at Fort Qu'Appelle. We attended a variety of sessions from rabbit skinning, learning archery and lacrosse and the impact of Residential Schools. The highlights for most students were climbing the hill with Mr. Croshaw, tug-o-war and the food vendors.
Our Junior and Senior Girls Volleyball teams won 2nd place in their home tournaments. Great job Bandits!
Kinnda Rienks came in 1st at Cross Country Districts in Echo Lake. Good luck at Provincials on Oct. 13 in Deslisle! Ms. Somefun & Ms. Zuiker took the Grade 3/4 class to the Lodge to read to the seniors. Studies show that children who read to the elderly have improved literacy skills and seniors get many benefits too!
