4 MANAGERS CORNER Hotel and Motel FIRE Safety On the occasions when we travel, there is often a need for a hotel or motel as temporary lodging. Here are a few suggestions to make your stay more comfortable and with less risk to you in the event of a fire. 1. If you are planning ahead, ask if the hotel or motel has a sprinkler system or at least smoke alarms in the rooms. 2. Consider fire safety when you are checking into your room. Count the number of doors down the hall from the room in both directions to the nearest fire exit staircase. REMEMBER elevators are NEVER to be used in the event of a fire. 3. Locate the nearest alarm box and read its instructions. There should be one on every floor. 4. Report any fire safety deficiencies to the front desk and read any posted fire safety information. 5. If a fire starts in your room, leave the room and close the door to keep the fire from spreading. Pull the nearest fire alarm. 6. If the fire is outside your room a. Feel the door, if it is cool open it a crack and be prepared to close it quickly if there is smoke or flames present. b. If no smoke or flame, but hazy, CRAWL (the visibility and air is better at floor level) down the hall, (counting the doors) to the nearest stairway exit. 7. If you are trapped in your room a. Fill the tub or sink with cold water and wet towels you can stuff under or around the door to keep smoke out. b. If possible, open a window to signal for help. Unless you are on the ground floor, DO NOT JUMP. The fire department is on the way. SWIMMING POOL SAFETY If there is a pool in your community, you re only minutes away from a refreshing swim on a hot summer afternoon. But remember, with any physical activity, there is always a degree of risk involved. Be sure to consider and remember the following; Protect yourself from the sun. The warmth will feel good, but the sun s rays can do damage. Be sure to use sun screen or an umbrella to limit your exposure., and don t forget your sunglasses. Watch your step. Water can make for a slippery surface as you enter or leave the pool. Getting cloudy? Be aware of the possibility of lightning in the area and leave the pool if there is a storm threat. Don t go it alone. Be sure there is someone else with you in the event you have an accident or sudden illness. If you have younger guests with you, be considerate of others, observe all pool rules, and be sure to keep an eye on them at all times. Know where to find the life ring, first aid kit, and the emergency phone in the event you need to call 911. Have a good time, enjoy yourself, stay safe, and come back often. Sincerely yours, JENSEN S INC. Mike Kane Operations Manager
