The Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board (NIFSAB) held an open house at the Pequette s residence on July 12 to display the fire sprinkler system prior to drywall installation. Family and community members including Mayor Ed Zabrocki were in attendance for the informational tours and fire sprinkler trailer demonstration. Amy s father is Tinley Park Fire Chief Mark Bettenhausen.Uncles Don and Tom Bettenhausen and cousin, Andrew Bettenhausen, also are involved in three generations of Bettenhausen firefighters. With a firefighting family, it just seemed reasonable (to add fire sprinklers and provide community information), said Jason and Amy about the renovation that added two stories onto their two-bedroom, one-bathroom ranch-style home. continued on page 4 Three generations of the Bettenhausen Family on the front porch of their fire sprinklered home. Fiftieth Sprinkler Added to Pleasantview Fire Protection District Sprinkler Tree T he Pleasantview Fire Protection District celebrated its 50th recorded sprinkler save by adding the sprinkler that controlled a fire in a local business to its sprinkler tree.since early 1985,Fire Marshals DanTholotowsky and Art D Andrea, with the support of Chief Dan Hermes, have kept track of successful sprinkler activations within the district.the activated sprinklers have been collected over the years to form a sprinkler tree, which stands outside of the Fire Prevention Bureau s office. The tree also includes photo plaques of the saved buildings and details about the fires. The idea for the sprinkler tree began after Tholotowsky and D Andrea took a class to learn about fire sprinklers in 1984.They contacted Rich Ray, president, Cybor Fire Protection Company to provide piping and other materials to start building the tree.throughout the continued on page 7 Fire Marshal DanTholotowsky and Deputy Fire Marshal Art D Andrea of the Pleasantview Fire Protection District and Rich Ray (center) of Cybor Fire Protection, after the sprinkler from the 50th save is added to the sprinkler tree, which stands outside the Fire Prevention Bureau office. 2 Fire Sprinkler Times October 2007 Upgrades to Fire Sprinkler Demo Units If you have not taken the time to utilize the three fire sprinkler demo units owned by your Associations, now is the time! The IFIA trailer stored in Alsip, the NIFIA trailer stored in Highland Park, and the NIPET SxS trailer stored in Gurnee have all been upgraded this last year to include an NFPA 13D residential tank and pump. The installation of the tank and pump allows you another option in your demo effort as you will not need to rely on an engine crew to supply the water for the activated sprinkler. The other advantage is that it allows a real life demo for those installations, with no municipal water supply. It also allows for its use as a static display between burn events where your constituents can be shown how a system really looks and operates. They are just sitting there waiting for you to use them at Village or District board meetings, open houses or special events.you do not have to wait for Five Prevention Week to use them. So please, go on the FIRESPRINKLERASSOC.ORG website and click on Sprinkler Trailer Demonstration Units. If you have never seen a fire sprinkler operate, this is your opportunity. The sprinklers worked so well that the car in the garage wasn t even damaged by fire. Damage was limited to $1,000 versus another fire we had in a similar type building with no sprinkler system that was probably in excess of $80,000, said fire investigator Mark Marinaro. WREK-TV NBC Rockford JUNE 2007 Modern Age Furniture Ormond Beach, FL Three sprinklers helped contain a small fire in a furniture store showroom. The fire was caused by discarded smoking material, according to the fire marshal investigator. The sprinkler system limited damage to a 10x10 foot area and caused only minimal damage of $8000. With some minor clean up, the business was up and running in a day or so, said Fire Marshal Mike Garrett. It is great example of how sprinklers help with business continuity. Fire Chief Barry Baker Ormond Beach Fire Department Central Ink West Chicago A single sprinkler extinguished a fire in an ink-mixing vat before any hand lines needed to be pulled. The sprinkler continued to cool the vat as firefighters arrived on the scene. The sprinkler system was quickly restored and the business re-opened within a few hours. 4 Fire Sprinkler Times October 2007 Tinley Park Family continued from page 1 However, even more important to Jason and Amy is the protection of their four children, all of whom are under five years of age. They knew from family firefighting experience that it would be difficult, if not impossible, for such young children to escape from a fire on their own in a structure with two or more stories. You can replace a house, but you can t replace your children, Jason and Amy agreed, adding that sprinklers in their new home provided extra peace of mind. Although the new house looks very different from the original structure, it was intrinsically important to the Pequettes to protect the building since it had been in the family since Amy s grandfather, Irving Bettenhausen, bought it in Current Assistant Chief Mark Bettenhausen lived in the home throughout his childhood. He thought the renovation provided community education about the benefits of fire sprinklers and the safety margin they provide for both life and property. Bettenhausen also hoped insurance companies would provide greater discounts and incentives for homeowners and businesses that equip their buildings with sprinklers. Tinley Park Fire Inspector Dan Riordan foresees the possibility that fire sprinkler equipped homes like the Pequette s house will be the nationwide norm in years. Promotion raises awareness of what sprinklers can do and dismisses the myths, Riordan said. Now having a better understanding of a fire sprinkler system through its promotion, Jason and Amy Pequette can live in comfort knowing that their family and the Bettenhausen home will be protected and safe from fires. The sprinkler system was installed by Alliance Fire Protection and funded by the NIFSAB through its grant. Schaumburg Residence is First Sprinklered Home in Roselle Fire Protection District Some may find it a bit ironic that the first house to be sprinklered in the Roselle Fire Protection District is owned by a home builder. Alex Zivkovic has built more than 60 houses in the northwest suburbs. This past spring, he decided to knock down his own home in unincorporated Schaumburg and rebuild on the property. He was told the new structure well over the 3,000 square foot threshold would have to be built of non-combustible materials or be sprinklered to pass code. Zivkovic went with sprinklers, by far the more cost-effective approach, but not solely because of the money savings. I think it should be mandatory for new construction, Zivkovic says of residential fire sprinkler systems. I would have put it in my house even if it wasn t required. It gives us security, he adds, referring to his wife Darlene and their children. Zivkovic s home is in an unincorporated part of Cook County that is protected by the Roselle Fire Protection District. Roselle Fire Chief Robert Gallas says the house is the first to be sprinklered in his district. To help spread the good news, he teamed up with NIFSAB this past summer to host an open house. The public was invited to inspect Tom Biscan, Roselle Fire Protection District (second from right), presents the Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition Living with Sprinklers kit to the the Zivkovic Family (center), as Tom Lia, NIFSAB Director (far left), Bill Harvey, Nova Fire Protection (2nd from left) and Bob Kleinheinz, NFSA (far right) looks on. the Zivkovics new sprinkler system before the walls were installed, to help increase the understanding of how sprinklers work. A sideby-side burn demonstration rounded out the educational event. It was very impressive, Fire Marshal Biscan says, noting the side-byside is an especially effective way to get people s attention, before there is a tragedy. Alexander Z Construction had sprinklers installed 20 of the new homes built to date. A few were mandatory installations, he says, but the majority of the homeowners chose the sprinklers. The sprinklered Zivkovic home is a point of pride in the district, and it stands as a great model for future development in unincorporated sectors. Fire Marshal Biscan points out that fire sprinklers are vital in areas where there are no hydrants. Without them, fire response requires a tanker so the engines can draft water a time-consuming process. A Sprinkler Trailer Demonstration Burn was held as part of the Tinley Park Open House. 5 October 2007 Fire Sprinkler Times RETROs e c t i o n Bridgeview Fire Department Gets a Safety Facelift Bridgeview Fire Department s Station One now meets Bridgeview s fire safety codes. It was retrofit with an automatic fire sprinkler system. Two years ago, the Bridgeview Village Board upgraded their codes including requiring fire sprinkler systems in all existing commercial buildings by Battalion Chief Mike Daley applied for and was awarded a FEMA grant to upgrade the station s safety systems. State Fire Marshal s Code Effort According to Fire Safety Officer Mark Kraft, the grant covered most of the cost to install the fire sprinkler system along with a new alarm system. The timing was right, we knew we had to retrofit the station, then we were awarded the grant, Kraft said. Advanced Fire Protection submitted the winning bid. Kraft said the installation went smooth. The project started in July and was completed in September. The system was installed room by room to avoid impeding the daily operations. We had meetings with Advanced Fire Protection every Wednesday to make sure we kept on schedule. Because of the weather, we were able to keep the apparatus outside while the work was done in case a call came in, Kraft said. In addition to recognizing Chief Daley for his success with the grant, Kraft gives credit to Fire Chief Robert Thurzo and all the firefighters for their help during the installation. He said they helped move items in the station while the sprinkler fitters worked. Kraft also credits Mayor Steven Landek and the Village Trustees for having the foresight to upgrade their codes two years ago. He said safety starts in the station where its important to protect the firefighters and equipment who ultimately protect the citizens. 6 Fire Sprinkler Times October 2007 Nova Fire Protection Recognized for Donating Sprinkler System to Trinity Group Home in Joliet Nova Fire Protection, along with Pasquinelli Homes and other trades were recognized for donating material and labor to build a home for Trinity Services, a non-profit organization that helps people with disabilities live full and abundant lives. The dedication ceremony was held at the new residence in Joliet on May 24th. Approximately six people with severe disabilities, most who need wheelchairs, will live in the home. HomeAid Chicago Chapter, an organization supported by the National Association of Home Builders, also participated in the program. A fire sprinkler system was required because of the type of housing. Because the home is not on a municipal water supply, a tank and pump system was installed in a heated room in the garage. Reliable Automatic Sprinkler Company, Inc. donated some of the parts, which were installed by Nova. According to Sean Bruin of Nova, there were no problems. The installation went smooth because everyone was on the same page. Nova has had experience on similar builds with Pasquinelli, such as Trinity Services women s shelter. With an alarm installed on an outside wall to alert neighbors of a fire and the sprinkler system installed within the home, Trinity Services can now be assured that its residents will live safely without the risk of deadly fires. HomeAid Chicago Executive Director, Natalie Rucker Ashton, Sean Bruin and Bill Harvey, Jr., both of Nova Fire Protection are awarded recognition for their donations to Trinity Services. If the fire at the Sofa Super Store, in Charleston S. C. had been in a building protected by a fire sprinkler system would the out come have been deferent? The Chief Building Official in Ormond Beach FL. believes it would have been. Fire Sprinklers A Huge Success Story As the nation recovers from the disaster that recently occurred in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine firefighters lost their lives in a furniture store fire, it is interesting to note that at a similar fire occurred in Ormond Beach with a dramatically different outcome. The Wednesday night fire at Modernage Furniture demonstrates the effectiveness of automatic fire sprinklers in providing life safety and property protection. According to Ormond Beach Fire Chief Barry Baker not to discount the need for proper firefighter training and staffing, fire sprinklers are your best friend in controlling fires. They are efficient, effective and essential to protecting lives and property. Firefighters were dispatched to the Moderage Furniture store at 445 South Yonge Street in Ormond Beach at approximately 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night. Upon arrival, firefighters found a small fire within the showroom being held in check with the buildings automatic fire sprinkler system. The fire was caused by discarded smoking material according to the state fire marshal investigator.the damage was limited to a small area of approximately 10 x 10 resulting in approximately $8,000 dollars in damage.three sprinkler heads activated. This is a great sprinkler success story states Mike Garrett Building Official/Fire Marshal for Ormond Beach. The buildings sprinkler sys- tem did its job. There were no fatalities, no injuries, and a very small amount of property damage.with some minor clean up the business will be back up and running in a day or so. This is a great example of how sprinklers help with business continuity. This fire incident clearly demonstrates the effectiveness and value of built-in fire protection. Quite often building and fire officials are asked;why does my building need sprinklers? Or told; our building budget does not include funding for fire sprinklers. While most building and fire codes require sprinkling of larger commercial buildings, fire and building officials still get resistance from builders and developers who only view the short term and tend to ignore fire safety. In reality most fire sprinkler systems cost about as much as carpeting and with proper insurance credits can pay for itself in 7 to 10 years. Barry Baker, Ormond Beach Fire Chief Mike Garrett, Ormond Beach Chief Building Official/Fire Marshal Sgt. Kenny Hayes, Public Information Officer ABC s national coverage of the Charleston, South Carolina furniture store fire included footage of a NIFSAB side by side burn and an interview with John Viniello, NFSA President. Three More Communities Require Home Sprinklers Three more communities have passed residential fire sprinkler ordinances bringing the total to 46 in Northern Illinois. The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District and the City of Highwood passed ordinances requiring fire sprinkler systems in all new single-family homes. The Lincolnshire-Riverwoods ordinance affects all new homes built in unincorporated Lake County within the district. Win-Bur-Sew Protection District in Winnebago County passed an ordinance requiring sprinklers in any residence 6,500 square feet or larger. The square footage includes all floors, garage and basement space, about 2700 square feet of actual living area. Congratulations to Chief Rob Martin for leading the way in Winnebago County. Scottsdale, Arizona provides even more proof that fire sprinklers save lives and property and belong as part of your community s fire safety program. With almost 40,000 homes protected since Scottsdale s fire sprinkler ordinance adoption, the community is able to lay claim to these 15-year record lifesaving and property-saving statistics: Passed NFPA 13D fire sprinkler ordinance on January 1, 1986 requiring sprinklers in all single-family homes. 51% of all single-family homes are protected with residential fire sprinklers as of January 1, Sprinklers are installed in 39,258 homes with less than half (37,652 homes) without sprinklers. 49 single-family home fires with sprinklers that experienced a fire could have created over a $20 million potential property loss, but only $106,110 in property was actually destroyed. The average loss per sprinkler-protected incident was only $2,166. And, most importantly, 13 lives were saved! 6 Toll-Free: 866-2NIFSAB ( ) FireSprinklerAssoc.org

7 Golf Outing Raises More Than $110,000 for Charity More than $110,000 was raised at the 12th Annual Burn Prevention Golf Invitational June 12th at the Cantigny Golf Club in Wheaton. The event is organized by the Illinois Burn Prevention Association. Richard L. Gamelli M.D., Loyola University Medical Center-Burn Unit, was the honorary guest. Dr. Gamelli s guest was Tim Gould, a former burn unit patient, who talked about his experience suffering from severe burns. Funds for this event were raised through sponsorships primarily from members of the fire sprinkler industry, live and silent auctions and a raffle.over 200 golfers participated in the event. Over the past 12 years, this event has raised more than $675,000 for Illinois children who have survived burn injuries and attend Camp I Am Me. Money raised from this year s event was donated to various organizations including $45,000 to Camp I Am Me, and $55,000 to the Loyola University Medical Center Burn Center and $10,000 to various burn prevention programs. The Illinois Burn Prevention Association s support has been very meaningful, said Rob Barto, Interim Executive Director, Development, Loyola University Medical Center. It s increased support is very much appreciated and beneficial to the burn patients; children, men and woman who are served by Loyola and are gene r o u s l y h e l p e d through new equipm e n t a n d p r o - g ra m s. L o y o l a s relationship with the Illinois Burn Prevention Invitational continues to be a wonderful example of how the fire protection industry gives back to the community. We re grateful to be associated with this event and we thank them. This year s event chairman, Amos Miner, United States Fire Protection said he and the event committee members are very excited about how successful the event was. Our sponsors and donors are the ones who really make it possible to raise the money that we do. I appreciate their help in allowing us to make the contributions to the worthy charities supported by the IBPA, Miner said. October 2007 Fiftieth Sprinkler continued from page 1 Fire Sprinkler Times process, sprinklers have been installed on the tree accurately and correctly and according to their types: sidewall, pendant, or upright. The celebrated 50th addition to the sprinkler tree occurred at Best-Way Refinishing in Hodgkins. Sprinklers controlled a fire that began in paint spray booth filters during process work. D Andrea said that this sprinkler save and many of the other saves not only prevented significant property loss, but also allowed the businesses to re-open within a few short days or even a few hours. He said that typically, the sprinkler that controlled the fire is replaced and the system is re-activated before firefighters leave the scene. Then the sprinkler that activated is brought back to the station to be added to the sprinkler tree. According to Tholotowsky, by reaching a tremendous benchmark with the addition of the 50th sprinkler, the tree continues to be a success story for fire sprinklers. All of the sprinklers represent significant homes and businesses that are still standing today due to the effectiveness of fire sprinklers. It also represents protecting the lives of the building occupants and the firefighters who respond to the fires. It was an experiment to see what sprinklers would do in our district and the results have been incredible, D Andrea said. Pleasantview Fire Protection District has provided a model that truly demonstrates the importance of safety and protection through fire sprinklers. We commend the Pleasantview Fire Protection District, Dan, Art, and Chief Hermes for not only understanding the importance of recording and explaining what happened to the businesses, but also developing this visual and hands-on prop at the entrance of their fire prevention bureau, states Tom Lia. The Pleasantview Fire Protection District services the communities of Countryside, Hodgkins, Indianhead Park, Burr Ridge, Willowbrook, La Grange Highlands, and parts of unincorporated Cook County.
