3 Founded in 1933 Our Founder P. K. Saunders The Saunders name originates from the inventor of the diaphragm valve and founder of the company. Phillip Keith Saunders was Born on 29 May 1899 in Bristol, UK. In 1911, he was sent to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. When World War I Broke out in 1914, Saunders served aboard the steel battleship HMS Goliath in the Dardanelles. On the day after his 16TH Birthday he took part in the battle of Jutland (June 1916). It was the largest naval battle in WWI. After the war, he was sent by his family to Brazil, where his mother had a friend who found jobs for Veterans. Saunders moved to Cape Town, South Africa in 1928 where he worked as an engineering draftsman for a company manufacturing explosives for mines. It was around this time, he invented the first diaphragm valve. In 1933 Saunders came across an idea that would change the world, and the Saunders Valve Company was born. In 1933 he came to Wolverhampton with the design concept and founded the Saunders Valve Company. He applied for the Grant for the Cwmbran Site in 1937, and by March 1939 Cwmbran officially opened.
