Though all sites present basic infrastructure needs in terms of antenna structures, antennas, transmission lines, and equipment, every site presents its own unique challenges. When deciding if you require a CCTV System, the decision should not be taken lightly and managing your system needs a lot of thought. You need to think through how the images are going to be used. Perhaps you will record everything and just check the recordings when you need to, for example when you expect an offence has taken place. But the more you record, and the longer you keep the recordings for, the more equipment you will require

CCTV is only as good as the person monitoring it, so the decision needs to be made as to whether there is a need for constant monitoring, or whether the system will be used as an events recorder. If there is to be constant monitoring, then a robust procedure needs to be introduced for the people monitoring the system on expectations and reactions should an event be captured. If the system is to be used as an events recorder then installing a digital recording system is advised for ease of use. It is also very important to consider lighting levels (or using infra-red cameras which can 'see' in the dark) and remember bad lighting can create a glare that renders the image useless. The fact of the matter is that there is no shortcut to installing a quality system; you will require a good risk assessment and an appropriate specification to meet any needs that are identified. The best way of achieving the best possible outcome is to have a survey carried out. You will also have to take on board that if the cameras are to be looking over public areas then you must abide by the Data Protection Act and a link is provided to enable you to download the requirements.
